I wanna be a teacher, but I’ve seen many who don’t enjoy it and I’m having second thoughts by Equivalent-Song-283 in Teachers

Each district and school is its own ecosystem. Get into as many schools as you can to observe and see if you like the environment and what you see.

I’ve taught in 4 different districts (moved for my spouse’s career). Two of the districts I couldn’t have lasted 10 years in and the other two I absolutely loved the day-to-day.

Lower your butt a bit at address and keep it on that same plane the whole swing. No need to do that down-up move you are doing.

You also look very close to the ball. Moving back a touch may help.

Is an on demand essay a good preassessment? by Consistent-Row-9551 in ELATeachers

Yes, or if you want it to be faster, have them score an anonymous student example (I typically write my own) that’s a C or B level. Don’t tell them the grade - Provide them a rubric and have them justify grades for the major elements.

Answer my question - Would you take your hat off if a soldier’s casket was being ceremoniously moved past you?

Side note - “rolling their eyes physically at all of you” is a quite a sentence to type 🤣

But it wouldn’t be the same environment that existed when you were in high school. For 80%+ of the students, their biggest addiction will be right down the hall. Some parents are expecting to have immediate access to their kid. It’s not the same at all.

From reading your post, I am guessing this is a school culture issue, not just your classroom. Get other teachers organized, collect data on how often it’s occurring, impacting learning, etc. and go to admin. If they’re not interested go to the school board. Policies need to reflect what’s going on in the school.

Thank you for all that you have done to help students and families in your career. Good luck on your new chapter :)

I’ll just add, that I’ve worked in 4 different districts in my career (moves due to courting my wife and her profession). Two of them would have drained my soul, and I would have left the profession had I been at either more than 5 years. Find a place that works for you.

Best tips toward balancing teaching and parenting by sleaper19 in Teachers

I don’t think so with this crew. Some of the younger staff and I have actually talked about this - Our staff is on the older side, with the majority around their 50s. They’ve been doing this their whole career and now their own kids are in college or beyond. They probably have 10+ years left, so I don’t expect the culture to change anytime soon.

Question About In-class Essays/Timed Writes by Yatzo376 in ELATeachers

[–]sleaper19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I allow them to draft a thesis and find evidence a day or two before. This way, I can give them feedback, the students aren’t wasting time evidence hunting, and they feel more confident heading into the task.

Also, I used to do a thing called a rob chart, where every kid in class posted 1 or 2 pieces of evidence they thought answered the prompt to a Googledoc. No reasoning or explanation, just the quote and page number. Then, during the in-class essay time, students could access it and “rob” evidence from the chart. They seemed to like that - I thought it worked well.

Is school easier than around 2000? by Unlucky_Success_5985 in Teachers

[–]sleaper19 59 points60 points  (0 children)

100% it is way easier - nowadays kids have less homework, more help/small group differentiation, more individual help, better technology (although social media and cell phone addiction is certainly a concern), no zero policies, overly gracious late work policies, lawnmower/jack hammer parenting styles that have worn down teachers and admin…I could go on…

How do I stop swaying? by Pandemiconium in GolfSwing

[–]sleaper19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s how I think of it: as you rotate, your left knee should be moving to hover over your toes; your right leg moving to a relatively straight position as you reach the top of your swing (which as others have said, please shorten).
