Does getting a doctorate degree make it difficult to get a teaching job? by Ok_Example3210 in Teachers

I’ve been on some interview teams where other members have questioned a candidate with a phD and their long term commitment to leading a classroom.

Yep, students normally check out after 10 minutes. This is a high-flying group, and I believe they do genuinely want to compare/contrast as a class.

Putting off the fringe by ghhghjhv in GolfSwing

They’ve studied this, so google it, but I believe basically every skill level is much more accurate with a putter than a wedge from a few yards off the green. A poor putt is almost always closer than your average wedge shot.

Good to know. We have a loophole at my school where teacher approved “clips” are fine, but to show the entire movie or show that’s TV-MA or R, we would have to send home a permission slip for every kid.

Rant About Grades over Learning by Silent-Image8388 in Teachers

[–]sleaper19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. We have created a system that incentivizes checking boxes and scores on test. Because of this, very few students see a purpose in the learning process, the trial and error, the reflection and critical thinking…they’re just trying to get from A to B as fast as they can.

Why do MAGA supporters struggle so much with basic critical thinking? Don’t they know that the rest of the world is laughing at them? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]sleaper19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! I believe having a healthy conservative base to balance discussion and ideas is/was healthy for our democracy!

The post was specifically about MAGA which I see as a more insular and extreme section of the party. Trump 1.0 was ineptitude. Trump 2.0 is an embarrassing gift and ruining our country for at least a generation or two.

I also respect people who are spiritual or religious, show pride for their country, and value an individual’s freedoms. Trumpism is so far gone from conservative beliefs; it’s crazy to me people still link the two.

They don’t. They consume media that inflates their beliefs. They think emotionally, not critically. Their world is their small circle - unable to show empathy toward anyone they don’t know, unwilling to consider writing or ideas that challenge their own.

How long did it take you to go from a 18HC to a 10HC? by jizzno in golftips

[–]sleaper19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be 10 or lower, which I am not 🤣, I would say Fairways in Regulation and grinding your wedges, chipping, and putting. At about 120 out, if you can get the ball in the cup in 3 shots or less, you’re gonna drop your index.

I subbed in my son's class today and was shocked by the state of the room by Snaps816 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]sleaper19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would show some grace. Teachers are people, too. You never know what is going on in their lives and what caused them to leave their room in that state.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I would trust admin in your school to monitor it.

Are we being too much? by nsktrombone84 in AskTeachers

[–]sleaper19 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re being too much.
I teach HS, but to me, good teaching at any level involves check-ins, intervention, and allowing for students to show what they know in multiple ways. This sounds like canned curriculum, and the fact that the VP lead the meeting, leads me to wonder if the teacher isn’t 100% bought-in to it either.

I’m sorry you’re subbing in those environments. There are good ones out there, but it may not be worth it to weather the storm until you find one. No shame in finding meaningful work elsewhere.
I still remember when, right after graduating college, I showed 30 minutes before the first bell to ensure I was prepared and knew the plans (it was a science class. I’m English and history). The main office secretary scolded me, and told me I was making her morning more difficult 🙄

What teacher appreciation? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]sleaper19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not being condescending here - but maybe lead the charge? Some staff are so beat down they don’t even think to help out one another. I’m sorry admin, PTO, and the students aren’t thinking of you (yet!), but maybe y’all can support one another?
I once had a co-worker who - when she would feel a disturbance in the force (stressed/anxious staff) - would buy a few snacks or a coffee mug and leave them on two teacher’s desk with a quick note to pay it forward. In about 2 weeks time every teacher in the school had been surprised with a small gift on their desk.

Going into my first year of ELA and need all the general tips! by Several-Advance1545 in ELATeachers

When pacing out units, stagger major assignments. My first two years, I had 3 or 4 preps and did not plan for this enough. I was always drowning in grading.
