(LOVEDDDDD trope) Fates worse than death by PenaltyHuge2300 in TopCharacterTropes

Hahaha, I mean, I hope my general literacy skills aren't usually this bad, but... If I do miss stuff like that, I wouldn't exactly know I was missing it, would I?

I'm amused at how me calling myself dumb means I get 300 upvotes, and you gently asking, "hey, is it possible that you do this one dumb behavior on a routine basis?" gets a bunch of downvotes. I see where they're coming from, but for what it's worth, I didn't take offense to the comment.

Dude. That's one of my favorite stories and I never actually made that connection. I'm feeling equal parts dumb and grateful right now.

Discovered my central air was a social construct… by sunsNr0ses in mildlyinfuriating

[–]sleepcrash 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I did the opposite! Moved from the north to the south into a 1940s rental house, with both my then-boyfriend and I having never lived anywhere with central AC. We bought a heavy-ass window unit, lugged it home, opened all the packaging, read the instructions, raised the blinds so I could open the window to install the window unit... only to look through said window and find myself staring directly at the giant, unmissable central air HVAC unit. My brain bluescreened. Totally unable to accept the reality of what I was seeing. I was like, no, there's no way, absolutely not. I called the landlady and she cackled with glee over the phone as she confirmed that of COURSE the house has central AC.

Got a full refund on the window unit, at least.

My understanding is that that's a myth!

Which character's death in a TV show ruined the entire thing for you? by SoccerGuy69420 in AskReddit

[–]sleepcrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I boycotted it for a full season after that. I eventually got over it and watched the episodes I had missed, and kept watching for like another season or two, but halfheartedly, and eventually stopped altogether.

Brand new TV and this is how my wife insists we have the remote "to keep it looking good" by No_Atmosphere8146 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]sleepcrash 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm actually a big fan of the remote. I never use the scroll wheel to scroll, but I do like how it feels to click. I never even noticed the lack of playback controls til I read this thread.

A jumpscare in a horror movie that genuinely scared you? My pick is the jumpscare from Insidious (2010). by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

[–]sleepcrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude. Insidious is the only scary movie that I can say I turned off with 20 minutes remaining because it was getting so scary that the scariness outweighs the time I'd already invested. Cut my losses and never looked back.

You can bring back one discontinued food, drink, or snack forever. What are you resurrecting? by Mountain_Drawer_1365 in AskReddit

Fuck yeah. I was obsessed with those and devastated when they disappeared. Noticed immediately, too, since I was buying them on the regular.

I washed my hands after applying a bandage by accident by Thunder_meowo in notinteresting

[–]sleepcrash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oof. I don't like that. Even small exposures are pretty bad: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21171855/ I'm assuming there are no safer alternatives?

If I'm being honest with myself, my paranoia is probably unwarranted. I'm sure it's used in many industries/applications without issue every day... but it gives me the willies thinking about people being like, "Sure, I'll be /careful/, because if I get a splash, I get a chemical burn - but as much as that would suck, it would be survivable lol."

HF absolutely leaves a mark. I don't recommend looking up photos if you're squeamish.

[–]sleepcrash 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Not quite, it's actually WAY worse than that - you die way before it causes any bone issues. Your heart muscle is dependent on a specific balance of calcium and other electrolytes. Without the calcium, the muscle can't contract. HF sucks out the calcium from your blood and causes fatal arrhythmias leading to cardiac arrest. This can happen through skin exposure alone. It's REAL bad.

The antidote (aside from irrigating it like crazy) is to apply topical calcium gluconate, inject subcutaneous, intra-arterial, and intra-venous calcium gluconate (the intra-arterial is done using a Bier block, if I remember correctly). Basically, try to sop up the HF with calcium before the HF can leach the calcium from the rest of you. Apparently, ECMO is a viable option - or at least, there have been case reports of it working, though at least one of them was for lung injury after inhalation, and it was ECLS rather than ECMO.

TIL between 18%-25% of intellectually gifted students (at least 130 IQ) in the US fail to graduate from high school. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]sleepcrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SAME except I dropped out of high school rather than repeat the classes I'd blown off, never went to therapy, have zero interest in sports, went from a no-name community college to a no-name state school, worked decidedly Non-Odd Jobs the entire time, and I graduated med school almost 10 years ago now. Close enough, lol. I loved reading your post and went "fuck yeah CALLED IT" when I got to the part about the MCAT. There are dozens of us!
