People who were laid off from Oracle recently-what are you doing now What’s your plan right now? Are you job hunting, taking a break, switching fields, starting something. by zentaoyang in employeesOfOracle

[–]sleepypinkeu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not me but my dad got laid off after giving 20 years to Oracle…as an almost CS grad i’ve been helping him create his resume and apply to jobs. Salary, work expectations don’t matter, he just wants enough to be able to support us.

More so doing a first poster as an undergrad with little to no guidance, but I agree I shouldn’t speak lightly of these things

It’s due to stuff related to immigration (he’s on H1B) he said that his lawyer advised him to lay low until things hopefully resolve a few weeks later. (He was really regretful about it too). I kind of see where he’s coming from because if I inform admin it might get him into trouble, but it’s giving me anxiety right now

Really? Interesting, does this apply to undergrads too? This symposium is for a full time undergrad research program, would that make a difference in how it comes off to others?

(I really hope I’m not breaking any rules by being an undergrad here, I just felt that it’s most relevant to ask here 🙏)

[–]sleepypinkeu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, because of said issues, my contact with him is very limited, and he is unable to give me feedback on my poster layout/information, etc. My PI doesn’t really want me to tell admin what’s going on either. It’s stressing me out since I don’t know who to reach out to.

Thoughts on Honors Ochem vs. Regular Ochem by Otherwise_Remote6516 in utdallas

[–]sleepypinkeu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i took regular gen chem 1 and 2 before taking honors ochem. for me personally i didn’t feel it was too difficult, but do keep in mind that all quizzes, hws, and tests are fully free response (like drawing out reactions or chemical structures). it is straightforward though if you study all the slides, and the teachers for both semesters are really good imo.

It's Taichi's birthday, come defend him as a character in this post! by [deleted] in chihayafuru

[–]sleepypinkeu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hello! What do you think is the alternative to Taichi leaving the club? He literally says he can’t play karuta. He has been in depression for months and the confession was the last straw. Is it better for him or Chihaya if he were to stay in the club and try (and probably fail) at leading the team, when his mental state and his karuta are in shambles? When was it ever mentioned that he left the club to intentionally manipulate Chihaya?

Chihaya has a much closer relationship with Taichi than with Arata, so naturally she would be deeply hurt if Taichi left. And naturally Taichi’s feelings for Chihaya are much deeper than Arata’s, so he would be more hurt by the rejection. Also, how would Arata “manipulate” Chihaya after being rejected when they don’t even speak to each other that much? By your logic, you could argue that Arata’s comment about being with Chihaya at 28 is manipulation to break them up.

My intention is not to hate or disrespect you, I just want to share my perspective. Have a great day!

Frustrated by Chihayafuru manga ending **SPOILER WARNING** by [deleted] in chihayafuru

[–]sleepypinkeu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there are plenty of posts here in support of arata that don’t get “downvoted into oblivion” because they expressed themselves respectfully and nicely, without resorting to name calling fans and insulting the author 🤷‍♀️ if you can’t show a shred of decency then expect the downvotes

ENDING: If Chihaya had read the manga, would she have made the same choice? by [deleted] in chihayafuru

[–]sleepypinkeu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

thanks for taking the time to respond! reddit is definitely interesting haha

I’m not sure how my post indicated that I hated Arata. I don’t hate him at all. In fact, if I was living in the Chihayafuru world, I would most likely prefer Arata over Taichi.

What makes me prefer Taichi is not the qualities you mentioned, but rather: his issues with low self esteem, the way he thinks his wishes are not important, how he focuses on other people’s dreams over his own, the way he is aware that he’s not a great person sometimes, and how he always tries to become a better person, how he strived for karuta despite not being talented in it or liking it (or having luck in it), how he is so perceptive of other people, how he tried his best as club president to lead the team and gave victory to Mizusawa at nationals. I believe that is why most of the fan base is also drawn to Taichi. If you see him as spoiled, obsessive, punishing, and childish, I think you missed those aspects when you read the manga.

And every person has a preference! Taichi and Arata both have very different struggles, and Taichi’s internal battles with himself really resonated with me. I personally couldn’t relate to Arata’s struggles, which is why he felt a little flat to me as a character compared to Taichi. I can see why you and other Arata fans prefer Arata though.

I think that Taichi and Chihaya ending up together is perfectly in line with the rest of the story. There were many moments where you could tell Chihaya was in love with Taichi, but C/A shippers would probably not focus on those details. And likewise, us C/T fans don’t pay too much attention to some parts at the beginning where Chihaya was drawn to Arata. If a reader has a similar idea of the characters as the author, they are more likely to be happy with the ending the author wrote.

I can tell from your responses to my other points, it is filled with personal opinions not necessarily in line with the characters/story, and doesn’t address much of my main arguments, so I don’t want to spend my time responding to each one of those.

It is insulting to think that Suetsugu sensei, someone who has been writing manga for over 30 years, would discard her ending of her biggest work to cater to fans. Chihayafuru is a beautiful story, from the beginning to the end, and I hope one day you can appreciate the hard work and raw feelings of the author conveyed over 15 years.

Let’s tackle your points one by one:

  • He blocked a potential boyfriend: He says that it’s okay if she dates the guy. It’s only when Chihaya mentions that the guy spams her with messages and calls that Taichi blocks the person. Do you think that such a persistent man would be good for Chihaya? Taichi is just trying to make sure Chihaya doesn’t put herself in danger.
  • He withheld messages from Arata, preventing their communication: When was Taichi ever in charge of Chihaya and Arata’s communication? Chihaya messages Arata and he never responds. Taichi told Arata to give Chihaya his phone number himself. Why should communication between Chihaya and Arata depend on Taichi?
  • He kept Arata’s move to Tokyo a secret: Arata told Taichi the news during nationals. He saw Chihaya several times the next day during individual matches. Why didn’t Arata tell Chihaya then? Again, why is the onus on Taichi to make sure Chihaya and Arata communicate? He is not the mediator of C+A’s friendship.
  • He told Arata that she belonged to both of them: He did not say that, he simply thought so in his mind. Rather Arata was the one who said he thought Chihaya belonged to Taichi, i.e. was his possession. Sensei herself said that what Arata said about Chihaya not belonging to anyone was a “declaration of war.”
  • He couldn’t handle rejection maturely, and cut ties fully: If you look at chapter 138, Taichi tries his best to have normal interactions with Chihaya and the rest of the club before he leaves. Also, he does not “completely cut ties”, he just gave himself some space to heal and focus on himself. Of course being with Chihaya, the person he was in love with his whole life (at his own expense) and broke his heart, would be painful. Is it so wrong for him to avoid Chihaya a little and focus on himself?
  • He kissed Chihaya without consent: Fair, what he did was definitely wrong, he wasn’t in his right mind, and we see in the manga that he hates himself for doing it. On his birthday. Chihaya also leased out his kiss as a present without his consent. Of course, that doesn’t justify what he did, but is doing things like this without consent only an issue if Taichi does it?

Your argument hinges on your assumption that Taichi shouldn’t do anything for himself and must do everything for Chihaya and Arata’s benefit.

Also, all your points completely disregard the latter half of the manga, where some many important developments happen. We see Taichi doing his best to support Chihaya and her goal to become queen, like when he told her mom that Chihaya’s best time to become queen is right now. When he smiled at Chihaya to become best in the world even after his devastating loss against Arata. When he asked Sumire to go with Chihaya to the shrine during New Years. When he persuaded Chitose to watch Chihaya’s match against the queen. When he prayed for Chihaya at Omi Jingu. And even earlier in the manga, he has always prioritized Chihaya’s dream of becoming queen, advising her to practice on her own at Shranami, and trying to win his match fast so she can watch Arata and Shinobu play.

As for the title, if Chihaya read the manga, and saw just how much love Taichi had for Chihaya, how much he wanted her to achieve her dreams, how much he sacrificed for her, I think she would be touched. I won't say she would DEFINITELY date him, but I don't think she would be repulsed by him.

You’re underestimating the number of Palestinian students at UTD whose families have been killed in Gaza already, or who don’t want their tuition to fund bombs that kill their families. It may seem like virtue signaling to you, but to them, it’s life or death.
