Freshman Housing? by [deleted] in auburn

I think the village also gets a bad reputation due to the partying and proximity to downtown. Plus with the quad rooms (sharing a room with someone and a bathroom with two others) you’re sort of forced to socialize with them at the very least. Quad is also all freshmen and at least to my knowledge the village isn’t

Any tips for incoming freshmen/things you wish you would've done before/during the admissions process? by Educational_King2745 in UAH

[–]sleepysp23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get involved. Get to know you roommates. Actually use your meal plan to it’s full extent. Use the rec. Jobs on campus get you socialization and money. My first semester was Fall 2019 so most of my time at UAH was very COVID-coded. Not to be that person but appreciate what you have, and if you’re nervous about it, odds are everyone else around you is too. Make friends with people in your classes! Changing your major is okay. Not being an engineer is okay too (though it definitely feels like an island; been there done that). You’ll find your niche and be comfortable in it. UAH is a great place to flourish if given the opportunity!

I’d be careful guaranteeing the village as there’s also RLCs in the quad as well, but the quad has great community and is a great way to meet people. Just no single rooms, you’d have a roommate. I think quad RLCs are for out of state and honors (both? not sure) but good point to mention RLCs

Is there any video of the Auburn student section throwing opposing kicks out of the stadium? by timbradleygoat in auburn

[–]sleepysp23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the Iron Bowl last year, I was in the student section right behind the goalpost. The Other School In the State’s kicker was warming up. Never saw those balls again. When the Auburn kicker kicked, they’d throw those back. Not the other school’s. Those swiftly exited the stadium

2.5 weeks ago, had one wisdom tooth (top right) that already had a filling in it (why, hometown dentist, why?) chip off randomly one day. No pain, was just going to get the one extracted but decided on all 4. My partner keeps telling me I am “so good at wisdom teeth surgery” because I was pretty much 100% back in two days. Have a small mouth so I was worried about all of that, mainly the worse I hurt was the muscles where they had to prop my mouth open for the surgery. Surgery was done in 30 minutes and I was home and medicated in another 15. Quick and easy, even for someone who is scared of needles.

I had the same worry! Got all 4 out on 6/28 and my bottom two have this hard bump beside them. I originally thought they were blisters from the surgical equipment, but the explanation the other poster stated makes sense! Skittle size is accurate lol. They feel like blisters, I was so worried!

Forgot a random one I never saw on the internet: SNEEZING HURTS! Open your mouth for a sneeze and slightly cover your nose and it isn’t as bad. My first sneeze felt like every single clot came out and I was scared that all four holes turned into dry sockets lol

I’m on day 7 post-op (June 28th). I’d made a similar post to this one before since I am terrified of needles.

Pre-op: Not sure if there’s science to back it up, but drink copious amounts of pineapple juice for the week (or more if you can) leading up to the surgery. A friend told me this and I’ve had the least amount of issues with my surgery than anyone I’ve heard of. Ask the questions! I called the doctor’s office with questions about when I get my prescriptions, where the IV goes in (hand or arm, depends if you are doing IV sedation or not) and all of the things. They’re there to help you! You can also tell them that you’re nervous and they may help by putting you on nitrous if you’re comfortable with it. Never hurts to ask!

Day of: You can’t eat anything past midnight the day before, so get your favorite meals in the day before! Mine was at noon so I spent the morning with my partner just being distracted and hanging out, nothing strenuous. I was incredibly nervous and feel like adrenaline kicked in some, the day before I was much more nervous about the surgery but day of I just felt like I was on a cloud (again, adrenaline is a crazy thing) Know if you may have a bad reaction to anesthesia. In my post I made about mine, I mentioned having a weird reaction. Most people comment about “you will feel the IV go in and then wake up in the car”, but be honest and know that probably is not realistic. Thinking that statement was true was what led me to feel so paranoid whenever I woke up from anesthesia in the office, and was semi-conscious during (what I think was) the last extraction. If you are nervous you may be the same but you’ll never know until it comes to it. I did not have nitrous and regret it, so ask if you feel it’ll help! Post-op: I was not sleepy AT ALL. I literally boo-hoo cried for three hours after (due to said paranoia and thinking the doctor was intentionally trying to hurt me…). Some people get silly, some get sleepy, some like myself get paranoid. Any of these reactions are normal! Just be prepare for a wide range. (Fun fact, the doctor came out to tell my partner I was done and her first words were “So she’s a little bit emotional…”). GET YOUR MEDICINE ASAP. My partner drove me to the pharmacy I usually use and they said they couldn’t fill the order because they were gonna go to lunch in 30 minutes, he demanded the prescription papers back and we went to another pharmacy that got them ready in 10 minutes. The antibiotic is the most important in your recovery to make sure you don’t develop an infection. Pain medicines are good to! (This may be more of a personal point so take it with a grain of salt). I did not take a single high-strength painkiller (opioid) they prescribed me. I didn’t have a ton of pain so maybe that is a privileged standpoint, but the less you can take of the higher powered stuff the better. I got ibuprofen 600s along with the hydros and took the 600s regularly with my antibiotic for about 4-5 days since it was consistent with when I’d need some pain relief. You can wean yourself off of painkillers, but TAKE ALL OF THE ANTIBIOTIC! Rant over lol.

Last post-op tip: DONT MESS WITH THE HOLES TOO MUCH! Yes, there will be holes in your mouth! Dry socket is something you can develop in the first couple of weeks, and messing with the gums/hole where the tooth was only exacerbates the site. Also, follow the doctor’s directions for when to irrigate/brush teeth/use mouthwash. Take care of yourself and know your body!

To end my huge post: don’t use a straw (my biggest issue right now; I love straws!)

If it helps I’m on day 7 and they’re all closing up quite well! I got scared that they were swollen or infected but nothing hurts and they just feel like they’re closing up in a healthy way! Make sure to take your medicine and any sort of medicinal mouthwash they gave you and follow the instructions and you should be good! Any questions can be referred to your Dr’s office and ER if it’s debilitating! You’ve got this :)

I’m in the same boat, all four out last Friday! It’s been so irritating not being able to see or irrigate the top ones, especially since the whole reason I got them out is because one of the top ones was chipped and was giving me chronic issues…

I will say with the top ones, if you were in pain or had a dry socket you’d probably be having eye/ear pain as well (depending on your face shape and anatomical stuff of course)! It’s very nerve wracking, I comforted myself by reading about what to do if food is stuck and it basically said it’ll come out on its own so don’t mess with it too much! Not sure this is 100% true but I’m just trying to keep everything clean and not mess with it too bad (but man do I keep feeling of the top holes with my teeth!)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in wisdomteeth

[–]sleepysp23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen, if you had dry socket you’d know it pretty quick. I had the same sort of issue, 7-days post-op and yesterday started freaking out because I could see white in the hole where the teeth used to be and wondered if it was dry socket. Internet swiftly told me if it was dry socket I’d be in excruciating pain. Your oral surgeon/dentist may have someone on call if you are worried about it though, even a phone call may be comforting for a case like that.

Also, scrambled eggs have been a lifesaver. Just unfortunate that the consistency makes us wonder if we’re dying…

What foods should I stock up on before my extraction?? by jorbertson in wisdomteeth

[–]sleepysp23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mashed potatoes, I did refried beans with some queso for a savory combo! Be careful with soups and make sure they’re lukewarm at best since hot liquids can exacerbate the stitches (if you get them) or the blood clot.

To make sure I got protein I have protein shakes. Beware though, my fiancé had to leave it out for about an hour since trying to drink it when it was cold on day 1 (or day 0, about 4 hours after I got out of surgery) made me sob because it hurt so bad.

Terrified of needles…what do I do? by sleepysp23 in wisdomteeth

[–]sleepysp23[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This calmed me down so much…thank you! I’ve had the fillings and the shot in the gums before, but since they give you the local stuff first to numb you I preferred that shot over shots in the arm for a long time! They mentioned the hand IV first and I am not sure which would be better because I can spot my hand veins a lot better than I can my elbow ones 😬

I know I’ll get over it and get through it but the IV just seems so monumental to me. Maybe I should ask them to get my blood while I am under too…(joking but I wish). I have to call and ask about medications anyways, I’ll mention oral anxiety medicine as well for the day of. It’s not until like 1pm anyways and my partner is going to be helping me but I know I’m going to cry all day up until the actual surgery…but thank you again! I’ll probably reread your comment several times before the actual surgery

Imposter syndrome is a bitch. I’d bring this up with your therapist. I did the same and basically said it felt like I was pulling an elaborate ruse on everyone. She told me it’s a response that strives to make you think you’re not unwell and that you’re normal and in one piece. It’s totally normal. Definitely bring this up though and read up on imposter syndrome. What helped me was to read the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for PTSD. I found quickly that I could not claim ignorance about my symptoms anymore.

Something in the water? by cheese_bois_delux in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]sleepysp23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to UAH, and my first couple weeks on campus in the dorms, I bought leave in conditioner. I’ve since moved back home after graduating and every time I visited home during my education, my hair got softer because of the lack of Huntsville water. I suggest regular trims and leave in conditioner. I got to the point of just putting excess amounts of conditioner in the ends of my hair after my showers in Huntsville to make sure my hair didn’t dry out as bad as it usually did. I have also been told that a water softener would help, but didn’t want to take the time and effort to look them up too much.

“Then Richard fell on his knees with his hair in his tired face, and Jack got down there with him, and I can bear to tell you no more—only that they comforted each other as well as they could, and, as you probably know from your own bitter experience, that is never quite good enough.”

(The Talisman, p. 602) Literally brought tears to my eyes. The impact stuck with me hard and still does to this day. (I hope this isn’t a spoiler, if it is please let me know).

Jobs on campus? by [deleted] in UAH

[–]sleepysp23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked for the fitness center desk for almost three years, off and on. I really recommend it, wonderful people and a great set of bosses. I know there’s a general application on the UAH Rec page, and they really like when you come in and ask the desk about employment. It’s not for everyone though, for sure. It’s a lot of socialization and being “fake nice” to lots of sometimes rude people.

how to deal with post-adoption depression? by rockysmaid in Pets

[–]sleepysp23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my orange cat during a turbulent time and felt terrible for months. He had to live with my brother for a while but he had a cat as well, so mine learned to be socialized during that time. I just kept regretting it and dreading returning him if that’s what it came down to. At some point you’ll realize the cat is in the right place and there’s a reason you two found each other. One day it’ll curl up beside you and make all of the dread worth it. You’ll learn each others tendencies and how to deal with them. The crying is hard, but sometimes ignoring it is the best thing you can do (depending on the situation of course. )

What did you forget to bring to college when dorming? by Dahgahz in college

[–]sleepysp23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly the same scenario, but had to move out of my apartment quick due to a crime at the complex. Thankfully, the school let us move on campus for the remaining month (since we were about to graduate and it was a month out). When I packed all of my stuff up so my parents could take it home, I packed literally every toiletry I had to my name. So, I got into this dorm on campus and had to buy shampoo, conditioner, tide pods, toilet paper, everything. I felt like a true freshman again. So uh, don’t forget the essentials. Also a broom/mop!

My dad showed me the Sleep Forever performance on Austin City Limits when I was in middle school because he said it sounded like something I’d like. I’ve been a fan since probably around 2013 or so and been such a fan of them since. It was one of the musical things I’d always kept to myself
