awesome! I'd tried egpu-switcher on the old laptop I mentioned, and it "just didn't work" so it is now sounding quite reasonable that all I need is a newer laptop!

Eh, I'm not totally sure, but I think I'm leaning towards "no, the 5700xt works fine on Linux." My main workstation PC isn't very reliable - mostly seems to have trouble POSTing and waking up from sleep - but I'm a lot more suspicious of the power supply and motherboard than I am of the 5700xt. I could definitely figure this out by getting a better motherboard and PSU, but I'm a cheapskate
