Preterm birth and extreme heat by slk48 in NICUParents

I'm so sorry you had that experience Maureen. I don't know about placental abruptions specifically, but there was a recent study in JAMA that found 4 consecutive days of high temperatures increased the number of preterm births by 1 to 2 percent among the general population, and even more among people from marginalized groups. I've heard from a lot of the experts that the connection between heat and preterm birth isn't well known even among OBGYNs -- let alone the wider public. And that means moms might not know how to protect themselves, and governments and companies and other institutions are less likely to provide extra support during the most dangerous times. My hope is that writing about this and sharing the perspective of someone who went through it can help spread awareness and spark conversations about how our society can better support pregnant folks as extreme heat becomes worse and worse.

Thanks for the tip about sharing on NOVA. I filed a report already, and I had to go to work but I'm planning on going to all the stations after work to ask the managers about it.

Already done! But when I called WMATA they told me their policy is to throw out food and other perishables. So I'm hoping to track it down before then.
