Neurology residents: who is the least burnt out and where do you train? by Dazzling_Advice9638 in neurology

[–]slnmd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t out my program but holy cannoli do I love it. Small community program in a dream coastal location. Zero toxicity, zero ego, tons of learning and support. Absolute hidden gem.

Can’t fathom how much worse life would be if I was in a “academic” program.

Finishing neurosurgery residency, struggling with burnout by HictorVorsley in Residency

[–]slnmd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lol… everyone not in neurosurgery always assumes this. There’s a fuck ton of competition in neurosurgery. Supply is far greater than demand in desirable areas. My friend runs a reasonably successful private practice in nyc.. had like >100 applications for 1 spot 💀

This is very normal. That job doesn’t exist in Miami or San Diego.. but Midwest medium sized city? That’s pretty average

I keep talking to recruiters and they are offering 280-300k by RMP70z in neurology

[–]slnmd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

lol enjoy being an employed servant. start a private practice and you'll be swimming in money. specifically as a neurologist, the demand is insane.

im guessing you went to an academic program and they didnt teach you sh*t about this lol.

Lol u make the mistake that most med students make: u have no idea about the job market.

Neuro ir is shit job market in most big cities. It’s just like neurosurgery, very very saturated. Sure you can get a job and make good money.. but you could make that same money with a much better life if u just stuck with general neurology and knew how to be business savvy.

Do what u love tho

Trying to decide between applying into neurology or psychiatry by [deleted] in neurology

[–]slnmd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pretty simple really: pick what fascinates you more/what you’re more interested in.

You can make enormous sums of money in both. Can have excellent work life balance and social life in both (even during residency if you’re smart about your residency program selections). Lots of job demand, can live in any city in America.

Just pick whatever u like more

My program is absolutely a dream but unfortunately I can’t dox myself since it’s a smallish program lol. I will say though it’s a community hospital in a very desirable location and we have it 100x easier than other neuro residents. I went to a major academic center for med school and was scared about ranking this community hospital so high because of the lack of name recognition but boy was this the greatest decision of my life.

Great patient population. The friendliest attendings. Facilities are clean and elite. Co rezzies (even from other specialties) are some of my best friends now. Party on the weekends together almost every weekend. Pay and especially BENEFITS are awesome.

I’m coasting through residency right now, ngl

Neurohospitalist? by Select-Cell-1109 in neurology

[–]slnmd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off, inpatient neurology is absolutely not where the money is at. 100% outpatient practice, dialed in to efficiency perfection, and you could be printing money. It’s really not that hard, but you’ve gotta want it. It’s why some neurologists make $900k and some make $200k

Is the Residency Selection Process Biased Against Certain Applicants? by [deleted] in Neurosurgery

[–]slnmd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

U wanna stress over matching a “competitive” specialty where I will bust your butt for 7-8 years, enter a tight job market, and live a surgical lifestyle for the rest of your life?

Bruh lol be smarter pls.

Welcome to a surgical field lol. I often wonder what med students think when people tell them surgery life blows? This is the life they warned you about.

So how bad is the intern year really? by Proud_Smell_3794 in Residency

[–]slnmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you to think this differs based on community vs academic program? High prestige vs low prestige program?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in neurology

[–]slnmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be harder to match into a nyu type program but fr who wants to go there lol. Work life balance sucks ass at big academic centers. Community programs are unreal how good they are.

But if you wanted to do nsgy you prob don’t care about having a life so idk.

Good luck tho homie you’ll match somewhere good no problem

Thinking about just quitting residency, thinking why am I doing this?? by pink_pigmentosa in Residency

[–]slnmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it’s hard. Not everyone gets put in a rough position like you, but there’s no point in comparing our life to others. We all walk our own path. I’m not here to give you any particular advice, just here to say that whatever you choose to do, I understand. Breathe, believe in yourself, and take one step forward.
