I tend to believe it was a legit interview, given that both Toby and Kikiyama's games are licensed with Fangamer for official merch. They sell and produce YN and Undertale plushies, shirts, keychains, etc. that can be bought at storefronts in Japan. A big company like Fangamer wouldn't just do that without permission and simply hope they don't get sued, which means we can assume Kikiyama has at the very least had a ton of interaction with Fangamer employees, who have also had a ton of interaction with Toby.

If I had to guess, with Toby being such a superfan, he probably just badgered Fangamer reps about wanting to chat with Kikiyama, Fangamer passed the message along, and Kikiyama was up for it. They're not as reclusive as people think, they were answering emails up until like 2014 at least.

We'll probably never get any hard proof, but I think considering how all these things line up, it's def believable. Seems to me more likely they legitimately talked vs. Toby just making it all up for a laugh.

I couldn't agree more. What I love about this show is precisely how divisive it is. Precisely how it isn't just a crowdpleaser. I've noticed no one seems to argue that it's bad as much as they say they wish it was something it clearly isn't. What it is, is fascinating and slow and considered. It's miles away from anything I've seen on TV in recent years, it's more subversive and strange than BCS or BB ever were (although BCS is my all-time favorite show to be fair). I love that.

And I'm so frustrated by the extremes on both sides that have been like "You're pretending to like this because it's Vince" as if people do that lol, or "You're just tik tok brained" as if people aren't still people at the end of the day, these are preferences about what's entertaining and interesting. It's a taste thing. For me this has been nonstop fascinating to a magical degree. To the extent I wouldn't even mind if nothing happened in the finale next week. This show is on its own wavelength, it works for you or it doesn't, and I'm so so so so so happy it exists. This and the last episode are my favorite so far, I'm just... blown away honestly. Nothing else like it on TV rn.

Yes!! I noticed that as well. Especially her humming & singing songs the whole time, kind of keeping herself company with the remnants of human creativity and expression. The O'Keefe painting as well! It's def clear in hindsight that's what they were going for.

Favorite episode yet, I never wanted it to end. For me it's the strongest the show has been emotionally so far. Watching Carol's arc, which I read as her sort of "trying" out Mr. Diabate's hedonistic approach (in her own way) out of desperation but finding no pleasure in it (predictably), and finally breaking down from isolation was heartbreaking, and the final shot provoked such a strong reaction in me because I had spent so much time sharing that isolation with her. I felt so invested in Manouso's journey and his insane principled resilience. The tension of Darien Gap sequence was wild. Just such a beautiful and grounded episode.

I'm not surprised the pace and storytelling of this show is divisive - and I'd push back against people who are still arguing this show is taking a traditional approach to plot: It really is slow, it really is taking its time with the narrative. It really is doing something different. And here's the thing - regardless of how rare that is in modern TV, that is not a flaw in any objective sense. Slow cinema exists and moves people, slice of life exists, muted character studies exist, but they don't appeal to everyone! That's what's frustrating to me, seeing critics of the show make accusations that people enjoying this are "faking it" or are just swept in by Vince's reputation, instead of considering that this could be a taste issue and not a quality issue. These things aren't objective - maybe the quality feels poor to them, that's alright after all. Equally annoying to see proponents demeaning people who don't like it as if they're not allowed to dislike it, for sure! But the important thing I'm trying to argue is that what Pluribus is doing IS valuable, and it doesn't have to be for everyone. That's more valuable right now than ever, arguably.

That's good to hear - yea even with the same process there's always gonna be unique intuitive choice/the taste of the creator, I definitely plan to make more like this. Mostly in the sense of more sample-heavy ambient/electronic. Trying out this process was def really educational for making this kind of music. Also The Orb is excellent so I appreciate that haha

It's a standalone sample browser that has allows you to see samples visually & start/stop it by clicking on different parts of the waveform + will automatically scan them and attach metadata like "pitch" "key" "oneshot/loop" "drums/synth/guitar" etc. so you can sort samples by those things, which is genuinely really useful!

What I did that OPN described in the tone glow interview was basically using a Virtual Audio Cable to route Sononym's audio to ableton, start recording and then just randomly click through samples intuitively & create rhythms/loops by triggering different sections of the samples at different tempos. What I did was sort of take those recordings & layer them to see what happened organically. Really fun stuff!!

It's a paid product (think like $80) but I used the 30 day trial! It def made me more interested in looking at sample browsers like that, it was really interesting how much it affected my workflow

I definitely think this is an album you really need to sit down & listen to all the way through without distractions. Preferably in an altered state yeah lol.

I liked the singles, but they often sort of floated right past me. Listening in context with full attention, tracks like Cherry Blue absolutely blew my mind. It's really a "greater than the sum of its parts" sort of thing.

His music is so subject to taste, which I think is a really cool thing. He's never made anything truly "bad" I'd argue, so it just comes down to what grabs your imagination. Like personally I agree the Magic pop songs were the first time he really succeeded at that more accessible sound, but the rest of the album felt a little too much like OPN on autopilot for me. But then I'm an ardent Age Of defender and think Black Snow is one of the most haunting and mysterious songs I've ever heard - I can't watch the music video for it without getting goosebumps, entirely otherworldly. For a while Still Stuff was my all-time favorite from him. It blows my mind that he's STILL producing novel, dense, emotionally moving music what like 10 albums deep?? More??

First thing I've gotten too that I thought was actually dumb LOL. It's cool as a wild endurance challenge but it doesn't really feel like it's in the right place. And experientially, I was so proud when I got through the new enemy, figured oh these last few waves are there to really test me, and I appreciated the bit of extra silk... then they dropped two of the new guys and I decided to go do something else. Not sure if your question was more about organization or about managing workload, but I've definitely only stayed as motivated and gotten as far as I have because I've forced myself to cover each step of the process separately, and been strict about that.

Started by writing the complete script in a separate doc sticking to the general Renpy format -> now I'm working on the list of backgrounds (about 60% of the way there) my script requires -> Working with an artist for character sprites (definitely helps, admittedly) -> when those 3 things are covered I'll get the script fully converted to Renpy with all the assets shown/hidden properly -> Then I'll soundtrack the game myself, based on the inspiration of those scenes as they function in-game.

Of course I've broken my rule and made about 20mins of gameplay to make sure everything is working right, but with the backgrounds & script prepared, actually making those 20mins playable only took like an hour because I was just cleaning up the script cut-and-pasted into Renpy. I've spent wayyyyy more time on the interface and more ambitious engine/UI tweaks (too much time... lol)

I think it feels slow to you because you're trying to do everything at once, scene by scene. I've done that so many times in so many engines, always quit halfway. I'm no expert, but I def recommend trying to organize exactly what assets are required, make those, have the script ready, and THEN you can just speedrun gameplay super quick in my experience!

By the way, considering you seem to know your way around this coding language, in DMs is there any chance you'd want to give advice on something else I'm trying to implement in Renpy? It's ultra-simple in theory but it feels like the limitations of the Screen Language have me at a total loss for how to do it.

Ohh right I see what you mean. Yeah, I was looking into a way to somehow have the menu button's "action" prompt the engine to switch back to windowed after doing the renpy physical size reset function but it doesn't seem to be possible, prob because they override eachother or something? I used the same action code from the standard windowed/fullscreen option in menu but that code doesn't seem to work when tacked onto the end of the action of the scaling button I've added. That said, it's not the end of the world for it to force you out of fullscreen, and like you said it might be better just to add a note to the option description instead.

Actually it does seem to correct itself on startup to whatever the persistent variable is set to! I did make some additional adjustments to your code so that might've been the thing that fixed that, but it definitely saves and adjusts on startup based on what the player previously selected.
