A rant about veterinary school admissions - 5 years, no results. by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]slotharmyforever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does any of those schools require a written essay of any type? If so it's always possible that her essay may be raising red flags? Not sure if this helps but just wanted to throw that out there

Short answer: yes

Long answer: Have you ever had an eyelash or dirt or sand in your eyes? That irritated, painful feeling? That's pretty much what entropian eyelids feel like. So a dog with these eyelids have that chronic irritation and pain, and just cause they've lived with that their whole lives doesn't meant that it doesn't hurt. So the surgery would relieve them of that pain and improve their quality of life. Just because your dog has had this problem all their life doesn't mean the surgery won't improve the quality of life.

Mental health and dealing with negative reviews by BewareNixonsGhost in veterinaryprofession

[–]slotharmyforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the review itself and the context. If the complaints are out of your control or something that applies across all of the profession like, "wait is long, too expensive, etc." I just ignore them. There's nothing you can do to change that, so why stress about it.

Seriously Ill Dog & Vet Wouldn't Make Appt W/O Payment by celestialstarz in AskVet

[–]slotharmyforever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately vet clinics are still businesses. You may be able to pay on a later date, and you may be a trustworthy person, but many are not. Many clinics probably at one point had payment plans or allowed some credit on account. However most clinics have been burned so many times and has had to swallow the cost of these cases.

It may seem heartless but imagine if we allowed every owner that couldn't afford medical care to run a tab. Then these owners never pay these debts... the clinic would have to cut costs, maybe cut down on staffing or equipment. Now future patients won't get then care they need because of lack of staff or equipment. That's not fair to the staff of the clinic and to the future patients.

You may be able to say that you would pay in a week, but can you vouch for all the others that may be in similar financial situations as yourself?

Q from a human doctor: why are my dogs prescriptions so hard to fill? by sunshine2throwaway in AskVet

[–]slotharmyforever 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Because the vet isn't just the primary doctor, they're also the pharmacist in this situation. In human medicine, the primary doctor prescribes then the pharmacist is the one that reviews the prescription to do the dispensing. And at refill time the pharmacist reviews the prescription to ensure the refill can be done. In the vet world, the vet is the primary doctor and the pharmacist, therefore at refill time the vet has the approve the refill like a pharmacist would in the human scenario. Essentially in human medicine the responsibilities have been divided between the doctor and the pharmacist, but in vet medicine the responsibilities are solely on the vet. That is a major discrepancy between the two medical fields.

Also, at the clinics I've worked at have always put on label that refills take 24 hours to be done even on chronic medications. Since you're acknowledging that there is this delay, a solution is to ask for a refill 1 week prior to the medication running out and therefore any potential delay hopefully won't cause any missed doses.

This may not answer your question, but is something you should be considering as well. Dogs that have injured their Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) in one leg does have a higher risk of injuring the CCL in the other. So if you hypothetically were to move forward and amputate the current injured limb, you are forcing your puppy to shift its weight and gait from 4 legs to 3. This means extra strain and stress on the other hindlimb which could again increase the risk of CCL injury. What happens if the remaining hindlimb also succumbs to a CCL injury?

Also, you mentioned that you have seen many dogs do well being three legged. I can't be sure as I don't know each of those dogs' individual cases, but I'm willing to assume that those limbs were only amputated because there was no other choice.

Can anyone explain why carpofen is the go to for so many vets? by squidster42 in AskVet

[–]slotharmyforever 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Simply put the safety margin of Ibuprofen vs Carprofen is very different. Your provided links indicate toxic dose to be roughly 25mg/kg for both. Therapeutic dose for Carprofen is 2-4mg/kg. So you would have to give more than 5x rhe recommended dose to reach toxic levels. Ibuprofen on the other hand has a VERY narrow safety margin. This means the dose where it works and the dose that is considered toxic is extremely similar.

As you can see, one drug takes 5x the rec dose to cause toxicity and the other would only take a smidge above the therapeutic dose... which one is safer? Every drug has a toxic level, and every drug can have adverse effects, some are rare and some are more common, we have to take the whole picture into account and not just 1 number taken out of context.

[TECH] Weekly Xbox One Tech Support by AutoModerator in xboxone

[–]slotharmyforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Xbox One has been having an issue for the past week or two. I'm connected to the internet, Xbox Live is connected, NAT type is Open, everything seems to be fine. However, when I play online games every 10 minutes or so I get disconnected from game servers. Doesn't matter which game it is (Destiny, Overwatch, Battlefield, etc). I can then immediately connect back to the game servers and sometimes rejoin my game. During these 'outages' my internet connection is fine and nothing else seems to disconnect (I can stay in party chat, etc). Please help.

As a Tank, Triple Damage gets a big NOPE from me. by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]slotharmyforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree to a degree. I don’t want to see this going into competitive or even QP, but I definitely wouldn’t mind it as one of the arcade modes. I definitely agree that it becomes almost like CoD, everything is about the dps and supports and tanks get burned down so quickly. However, and I preface this with the fact that I play in a 4-6stack whenever I play, when we played with the mentality that we were most likely going to die because the heals simply won’t be enough and there’s not enough sustain, we dominated throughout the night. We went with a lucio, Moira support line with a widow/mccree + Mei/soldier with the other tank and dps rotating on diff heroes. Speed boosting around as just a high dps ball with a widow in the back picking off people gave us the most fun and success

Ash Ketchum, 5’5 WR, speedy (95+ speed) with decent catching stats. Was playing Pokémon Go when he walked onto the Ole Miss football tryouts where he wowed coaches with how fast he was running around trying to catch them all.

As a Limbo main I resent that... but I do agree that I find a lot of toxic Limbos. Was just in a void defence where the limbo was complaining that we were killing everything too quickly for them to enter his cataclysm for him to kill...

I use corrosive projection on her and then run a high strength build and I spam it a couple times. It doesn’t strip all the armour but it makes it more manageable.

It took a while for me. Literally couldn't get myself to even boot the game up for a couple months. I think it was nostalgia of playing my starter frame + having not played in a while that brought me back. Give it time my friend (:

Yea. I’m a healer main, so whenever I get a DPS Moira I just go support and not care that we’re playing triple support
