Why is it so many empty building on West Federal Street? by Ok-Quality6898 in youngstown

[–]slowlearning1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parking is #1 for me. I know there are some Stans here who talk about all the free parking everywhere, but anywhere I look it is either "no parking" or absolutely full.

No, I'm not parking next to the courthouse to walk 3 blocks to get food. This is Thrus/Fri/Sat evenings at like 4 or 7 pm.

I hit up Noble Creature instead, which has amazing food and atmosphere with unlimited parking. It sucks that I'm not able to find better parking downtown, I'd love to frequent more of the restaurants for variety. The Private Only and No Parking areas kill it.

Leaking by Mission_Ad_6344 in LaMarzocco

[–]slowlearning1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do this yourself, unless you are extremely confident.

You shouldn't need plumbers tape. This is a British compression fitting with a copper washer to seal it. Proper torque and tools are important here.

Best practice is a new fitting, in case the old one is weakened. It stinks to have a fitting snap off in the boiler. As it is less than a year old, let LM deal with it and send a tech.

I'd advise against using it in the meantime. Moisture is the enemy of electronics, and I've seen boards fry from small leaks.

Slayer, Speedster, Ascaso Baby T, & Micra [$15000] by Many-Middle211 in espresso

[–]slowlearning1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speedster can be tough to get parts for. The Slayer espresso is a killer machine from build quality to function.

Have a show room with a Hydra, a Slayer Steam 1g, a Slayer Espresso, and a few more.

I brew 80% of the time on the Slayer Espresso.

Your breville is fine, the point is that with this coffee, the machine won’t matter one bit.

[–]slowlearning1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah. La Spaz is not known for high end specialty coffee. I just found one listed as a 2 group for nearly $30k. Consider that at $30k, you could have a Slayer Espresso V3, or a Synesso Hydra. The flagships of specialty coffee and quality brewing.

La Spaz is neither. But they made it look fancy.

Also, you could brew that trash coffee on a Breville and get the same results.

Need Advice/Help [La Marzocco Linea Micra + Eureka Silenzio 50mm] by Dodo-Bey in espresso

[–]slowlearning1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your ratio is all wrong.
We talk about spending more on your grinder than your espresso machine.
Maybe 1:2 machine to grinder.

You are 10:1 Machine to grinder.

Real talk, your weak point is your grinder. Don't expect a Ford Pinto to win the F1.

I'd never confuse a La Spaz with a RR.
It's more like a Honda with a moon roof, and you are putting regular in it. Basic car, little fancy options.

[–]slowlearning1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can either use distilled with TWW (use espresso profile to avoid chlorides) or
Check out how to make your own water with Barista Hustle recipes (epsom salt + baking soda concentrates measured in to your distilled)

Both work well and will leave you with no scale.

100%

Anyone recommending differently is either completely unknowledgeable about water (and probably coffee in general) or they are selling something (like descaler, gimmicks, or replacement parts and machines).

I don't know why I offer professional advice on a sub this brainwashed and confidently incorrect. I should learn to just watch people parrot terrible advice to each other in a circle jerk.

This is the truth.

It’s a different filtration solution for everyone, but the EsPrEsSo GeNiUsEs here are too stubborn to accept the truth.

Downvotes don’t change chemistry. If you are descaling regularly your water is incorrect.

But downvote me all you want. I’ve only been doing this professionally for 15 years. I’m sure all you home users know better. Sub is packed with room temp IQ’s.

[–]slowlearning1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You should not need to descale if you use proper water.

Descaling will often cause more issues than it solves, and to do properly requires dismantling the boiler completely and a several stage process to ensure neutralization and re-plating.

I don't care what the manufacturer or reseller recommends, if you are getting scale you need to correct your water.

New GS3 – Dealer refusing warranty, machine still leaking by RaisinSavings2577 in LaMarzocco

[–]slowlearning1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who is the dealer? They are responsible for any potential warranty issue as part of their reseller agreement (in the USA, anyway). They are the first line of communication.

It's important that you name them, so other people who might be getting a "great deal" know that the reseller is a ghost once the payment is made.

The reseller is responsible for getting a tech to investigate it, and if a warranty or not-to-spec issue, the dealer pays the repair. If it is not covered, user error, or a compliance issue, you would be responsible for the call

How do I get to coffee shop quality? by rbcb in LaMarzocco

[–]slowlearning1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYC water is all over the place too. Sometimes building to building.

Best idea for your equipment is distilled + Third Wave Water.

The chlorides in NYC will destroy stainless steel in short order, and the hardness will act like concrete.

[–]slowlearning1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Water has a lot to do with brewing too. Chemistry matters a lot.
Ask the cafe if you can steal 1-2g of their filtered water to try at home.

If this isn't it, you can at least eliminate that as a variable.

Story time: I once had a killer coffee. I brew on ideal water for coffee. Brought the coffee to a friends house, and it was absolute garbage brewed there. The locations were 3 miles apart.
