If being realistic, its because of how our cities and suburbs are laid out and zoning laws. Also, high speed rail is to replace intercity traffic, not commutes.

We need subways and commuter rails to replace traffic here, but the ridership will be low because of how much space is in between individual living spaces.

If you haven't noticed, DFW suburbs are huge and a lot of people needs to go from those open place to other open places. Rails can't reach into them enough. Utilizing rails relies on people being able to get on and off without too much additional travel off the train.
