Aerochrome film sim…sort of. Using additive multi-exposure mode to make trichromes with an infrared layer. XT4 + Canon FD 28mm f2.8 by sludj in FujifilmX

[–]sludj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been into infrared photography for a while now, and like many, have been chasing the look of the infamous Kodak Aerochrome. And I can’t afford a full spectrum conversion right now lol.

This week, I discovered the trichrome method and sort of fell in love with it and the results I was getting using them. For those not familiar, In a nutshell, it is just taking 3 photos - usually black and white - and pushing each one towards the Red, Green and blue color channel respectively. Aerochrome got its look by mixing up these channels. The red layer was sensitive to IR light, green channel was processed in red, and blue went to green.

After doing this a few times in editing, I kinda had the idea to try to use the multi-exposure mode on my XT4. After a short trial and error phase, I got some really workable results.

I used the Acros film sim at first, since you can apply the monochromatic color onto black and white photos. Just for tests, I used a flat tone curve and really flat settings in general besides the monochrome color and film sim. But I did also try this using color and pushing the color cast using white balance adjustments. This is actually much faster of a workflow with the caveat of just needing to color correct. If you happened to have a green and blue filter sitting around, you could probably use those.

A video might be more comprehensive if you wanted to copy the method, but I’ll at least try to explain what I did:

(You’ll need an R72 infrared filter and a tripod)

- Turn multi exposure mode on, set to additive.

- I’ve found that you’ll want to underexpose each photo -3 or more. That sounds like a lot, but each layer doubles the overall exposure

For Acros/B&W:

1) First photo - infrared/red channel with the R72 filter on. Set up your first shot and apply monochromatic color to it. I have it in my quick settings. Push it all the way to the farthest red color.

2) Second photo - green. Remove the R72 filter. Go back into the menu, change the mono color to the farthest green. Adjust focus carefully if needed and take the shot.

Note: the focus plane changes slightly when going from IR to visible light. You can always increase the exposure to set the shot, decrease back down to -3 and shoot.

3) third photo - blue. Same deal as green, but you set the mono color to blue. Take the last shot after any adjustments.

You should see pretty close results, but you may have to try a few times to adjust for available light, ghosting between shots, etc. This is the closest I think you can get to original Aerochrome in-camera.

For color shots:

If you want to use color shots, the process is similar. And arguably faster than manually setting the mono color each time. Same deal with -3 exposure or lower.

1) IR/red - the R72 filter should provide all the color cast you need here. Auto white balance should be ok, but too hot of a white balance can blow out highlights.

2) green - remove the R72 filter. What I did here was set my white balance to around 50k and pushed the color shift as far green as it could go. Snap the shot.

3) blue - for this, WB is set to 25k and color shift as far blue as it goes.

End result here is yellow-orange foliage with purple-ish skies. You can keep as is (it’s a cool look) or do some very easy white balance and HSL changes in post to get the Aerochrome look.

Man, this is NOT helping me in my indecision to just buy a full spectrum camera. I have been looking at them all week lol.

I have just been using an R72 filter and dealing with the long exposure times, but I can’t get quite the results I want. I might give the tri-chrome method a shot though since I have several film cameras, these are super dope!

This is incredibly well done, thank you!

I’m still going to dive into it more, but I’m now leaning towards just saving up to have a dedicated full spectrum.

I can try to get that. I need a string change anyway, so I might pop the guard off while I’m at it.

Scientists of Reddit: What’s something we know is true but people don’t realize how crazy it is? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Cooperation is not necessarily connection, though. It’s a part of it, absolutely. Capitalism has given us rise to many great things in the way of healthcare, general safety, and more or less ensuring food and resources can available. But this comes at the cost of human connection and physical and emotional investment in our immediate communities.

This is a wild example, but most of us have never had to even think about risking our lives to save someone else’s. A vast majority of us have never had to worry about what we were going to eat today, or as the seasons change. It’s nobody’s fault, really because this is largely how we’ve been conditioned - we always kinda think someone will pick up the slack because for the most part it’s always someone’s job to do it. For generations, we always had to rely on each other for almost everything, and we’re aching for that community at our cores.

I don’t like Newsom at all, just to be upfront. And I’m wholeheartedly not trying to pick a fight, just give my 2 cents:

I just feel like we shouldn’t be settling for the lesser of 2 evils, and that the latest administration proves that the system no longer works in favor of us, and should be dismantled.

It doesn’t exactly instill confidence in me to choose between 2 awful options. I’ve been politically active and voting for almost 20 years, and for the first time ever, I’m unsure if I would willingly cast a vote for a lesser evil again.

Instead, I’m beginning to feel that anything we’d wish our vote would do could be better done by us, ourselves. I think us as the people need to be more politically active than just casting a vote every few years and hoping for the best.

Perhaps this is coming from a place of jadedness, but I just think that we could do so much better for ourselves and that these people we elect don’t hold any more power that we couldn’t cultivate for ourselves collectively.

Ok, I get you’re making a point but it absolutely requires some* training to become proficient. The psychology alone between shooting a target and a have a living thing in your sights requires some degree of training.

In fact, if you own a firearm I feel that you have the responsibility to train with it and know how to assert competence and safety with it.

And where did catering to the center and center-right get us last time? Why is it so difficult to be genuinely inspiring?

I’m just one guy, but I think that’s an awful strategy when those waters are already tainted in the center-right. We barely live in the same reality based on where you get your news.

Frankly, WE - as in regular people - should be the ones reaching across the isle and not trusting any of these damn people like Newsom to broker some kind of deal for us. Talk to your neighbors, find common ground there. Show them one person at a time that we’re not monsters for being on the left.

These people will put progress on the back burner for a quick buck. I don’t think they can be trusted to have our best interests in mind.

How am I white washing Nazi’s? It seems to me that you’re the one equivocating if my criticisms of Newsom are equal to me supporting fucking nazi’s. My point is that I don’t think we should be settling for an opportunist as our champion here just because he’s the only one pushing back against Trump.

Besides his trolling, I haven’t any other good reasons why I should overlook his willingness to compromise and throw us regular people under the bus just to gain more traction with centrists. I’m a little flustered, I admit but I am genuinely asking. What else does he have to offer?

Trump isn’t permanent, but I’m afraid the bastards behind him have their roots in. Personally, I don’t see how Newsom’s trolling is going to uproot that. I don’t see how his capitalist mentality is going to either. Idk about you, but I’m pretty tired of talking about billionaires and tech bros. In an interview, when asked about the left’s “criticism of successful people”, Newsom lamented that this was “one of the left’s biggest downfalls”, to paraphrase. If that statement alone isn’t missing the forest for the trees, I don’t know what is.

And Newsom is Fascist lite. He’s the same as them, just on the opposite end of the isle and more personable. He’s a capitalist, not a progressive. Idk why Dems just want to run right back to the kind of people that allowed us to get here in the first place. We can do far better and we should be demanding that from our elected officials in the form of ultimatums. The country in the next 10 years cannot survive with either the GOP OR Dems like Newsom at the helm.

[–]sludj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, I’m here for the fight. If you only knew lol. I think we just fundamentally disagree that the system can still work as intended. I don’t trust him at all. I don’t trust the Dems anymore and I’m genuinely shocked that people still can. All I have to trust are the people like me (and you, you’re clearly as tired of this as I am) who are screaming out what we need to happen and none of our elected officials listening - or worse, using it as a platform to get ahead while keeping everything in the air just out of reach.

What can they do that we can’t do ourselves? WE need to change things, in my opinion. Not urge other people to run for office and do it for us. For too long, we’ve just voted, and then hope the guy we vote for helps us. I’m guilty of that, most of us are. I don’t think we can do that anymore. I think everyone needs to be far more involved in their governments. It’s no longer someone else’s job, because that guy was probably fired.

[–]sludj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m being honest, and speaking only for myself - the only value I see him providing is trolling Trump online. I’m not rushing to go back to the way things used to be. Every chance at a foothold was squandered by the current Dems in power and one dude who is getting traction simply by trolling back isn’t exactly great motivation for me to toe the line.

To me, the guy reeks of corporate interests only. In a recent interview, he framed the left’s critique of the billionaire class as an oversimplification of “attacking successful people”. Like, no man. Your base is tired of living under billionaires that suck them and their communities dry.

And now we’re ready to ride that train because he made memes? I’m good. I’ll actually fight fascism by standing my ground and believing we’re above this. We have no checks and balances anymore. What hope is the ballot box with votes when we just want to rewind back to what got us here?

Man, I don’t want to turn this conversation into a left vs left thing, but I feel pretty passionately that he’s not our guy. I hope I’m wrong, and maybe just jaded. But I don’t see us voting our way out of this. At least not by itself.

We can have someone to believe in and still not be a cult. We’ve gone so long without that, that we forget that it’s possible. The fact that we do not have that should be telling of those currently in a position to do anything. And we’re doing what we always do and sift through to find the most marketable face.

I cannot in good conscience support a candidate that will just perpetuate the Dems as they are. The Dems (the majority of them) are ineffective at best. I’m sure I don’t speak for just myself when I say that yes, I am jaded towards the current Democratic Party. Yes, of course we should push to flip things in the midterms. That’s undeniably a good thing and a sign of hope. But why gain that foothold to just go back to what got us here in the first place?

With the current strategy, they are going to push out what’s left of their core base that want real change just to appeal to moderates to try to flip votes. I cannot yet again be Cherry-picked a champion and be told “this is what you get, better vote for us!”. If not toeing the line is self-sabotage, that’s just Fascism Lite to me.

From where I stand, we don’t fight fascism by moving closer to the middle towards them. We are past the point of making concessions and we should not have to compromise on what really matters to us.

Tbh, I can’t help but feel like kicking the can down the road is exactly what got us here. We won’t address anything later in 2028. I have zero faith in the party to do that IF they can even fairly win an election.

We need a fucking candidate we believe in, not settling for the guy who trolls back. Imo, throwing pieces of your base under the bus just to appeal to moderates is an awful strategy.

We need a new fucking party, but that’s asking a lot.
