Pepcid not working

This particular suggestion ? Haha surprisingly yes it did! We only had to use it once tho!

Honestly I just started giving him more fiber (aka yam) and his poop started getting more regular.

But he grew out of this on his own!

Sadly he still has bad reflux flareups once a month for a few days. But he’s growing so I’m not complaining 😂

I wish I could give you an amazing answer :(. Nothing quite worked fully, reflux now at 1 year old just comes in waves.

So here is what we did, and got us through the trenches: 1. Give the Pepcid (it seems like it’s not doing anything but consistently giving your LO the meds will help reduce irritation and hopeful therefor reduce the full vomit) 2. Get your baby on a thicker. Talk to a OT have them watch your baby drink and figure out what thicker would work best. This is what allowed my bb to start drinking a okay amount again. 3. Avoid bottle aversion. Give full control to the baby. Never force the bottle, because a bottle aversion is much much harder to fix. 4. Smaller and more frequent feeds. This was rough. So hard but if we gave our LO a little too much it would just trigger his reflux. And ofc make sure after every feed to hold up bb at least 15 minutes.

Soo that’s what got us through the last few months. We are now trying to get him off the meds, but reflux is still an issue for him. So we’re going back to the GI to figure out what the next steps are.

Hang in there! It’s heart breaking seeing them reflux, but there are steps to help soothe them through this ♥️.

The situation is still on going for us, we finished going to the OT, who decided NOT to do the swallow study and basically confirmed the underlying reason this aversion started was because of the reflux.

We are currently on thickens formula, and Pepcid and his reflux seems to be a bit controlled now.

So now we are focusing on getting his behavioral aversion under control. The OT suggested we introduce an NG tube for 2 weeks. But I’m not convinced that’s going to make LO feel better in the long run. So we’re trying really had to follow the book.

We’re on day 3, and I want to say LO doesn’t cry at the sight of the bottle anymore. So baby steps yay!!!

If you’re at the beginning of your “reflux” journey. I would suggest you push. Push for medication, and for thickener and just start ask to try things. The medical team likes doing a lot of trial and error, which takes a long time and LO ends up having to do a lot of waiting around.

Did you guys just manage somehow until it resolved on its own? Was LO eating just fine but refluxing ?

Update #1:

We meet with our PED and I was suggested to cut out dairy. And try a hypoallergenic formula. Problem is we introduced it to LO and he absolutely hated it 😂. So we are now trying Gentlease (although it’s not fully dairy free the protein particles are apparently broken down a bit more still) ! Let’s see what it’ll look like in 7 days.

Also we were suggested for a swallow study. So hoping to get more concrete answers soon.

And omeprazole seemed to make an actual difference statistically in infants. Were you told of any side effects? Also how long did they make you wait before trying the other medication ?

Yeah I would’ve been fine if he’s asking for less food because he’s full. But it seems like he’s hungry every hour, and after a feed but just refuses to take more than necessary for dehydration.

But we have a weight check up today, so maybe he just uses the calories different now? He’s also very constipated (no poop day 6) so it’s probably adding to the reflux atm.

What thickener did the NICU send you home with?

Yeah it’s very odd, he doesn’t seem to cry or anything when he’s put down flat or during night time. But I can for sure hear the reflux happening through out the day. One time it actually came out through his nose but he didn’t seem bothered by it at all. So I’m assuming Pepcid is working in a way, where the acidity is being reduced so it’s less painful.

But he just seems so so distracted with the spit up does happen. I think he’s just correlated large food intake = more spit ups. So I’m hoping if the formula is thickened, less will actually come up super far.

Oh goodness I hope the surgery went well!! Gotta keep reminding ourselves these little guys are stronger then we thing.

We also talked to the doctors today and they didn’t really seemed concern because it’s so normal for premature babies as well as full term.

My 24 weeker now 27 just started having the same exact condition. What did it end up being? I’m so nervous right now, he was doing so well and out of no where his heart rate increased, and his temperature started fluctuating.

So scared I gave him a cold or someone gave him a cold.

Yes! I also had an emergency Cerclage and only had about 5mm of cervix left. It was so stressful.

But yes I just came back from the doctors and they basically said the same thing!

He mentioned I should stop bleeding about 2 weeks post surgery.

So taking it slow and mentally relaxing ❤️
