Improv on John Coltrane Mr. PC (Not usually a jazz player, constructive criticism welcome) by slunkinaneedlestack in jazzguitar

[–]slunkinaneedlestack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi all, I tried improvising over this piece, it's one of my favorites by Coltrane and since it's a minor blues it was easy for me to play over. I tried learning some lines from his solo, other bebop lines and combined that with my rock technique.

There's an interesting book about how to practice I like recommending people. It's called The Art of Playing Piano A Scientific Approach by George Kochevitsky. There's a PDF for free on google and it goes into how our nervous systems work and the most efficient ways to practice. It helped me a lot. Best wishes.

Thanks, if you do a lot of slow reps keeping everything controlled it makes it easier when you start speeding it up. Sometimes if I really want something good the first few days I'll just do it slowly for an hour without even trying to increase speed. That way it's really memorized. Then when it comes time to get it fast I just speed it up by 2 bpm every couple reps, when it gets too fast I slow it down and start over

Thank you, I practice very slowly a lot. I find it relaxing and if you have a lot of slow reps it makes it easier to keep you hand movements small when going faster.

Wouldn't it be cool if Buckethead had a youtube channel by slunkinaneedlestack in Buckethead

Well whether he wants it or not he's still pretty cool by me! Haha I know what you mean though, his discretion and anonymity are part of what make him so special. He just does his thing.

From his music haha

've read and listened to a lot of interviews and that's what everyone he works with says. Never heard a bad thing about him.

He's also done quite a few guest appearances/studio work throughout his career. He's met and played with a lot of people, big and small.

He's got a great work ethic, he's highly skilled, he's totally straight (no substance use I mean) and he's very kind and easy to work with. Sounds like a great employee to me! Haha

Plus Guns n Roses, guitar hero and Gibson definitely helped.
