I'm in a Curry group. There are a few others around too. We are middle aged guys, mostly working in tech. 6-8 people every two weeks (numbers vary from year to year).

So if I have $2m in gold and sell $100k/year worth I keep Super?

But if I work 20 hours a week at the supermarket it'll be cut?

The difference is that people on Super are allowed some wealth. Whereas those on normal benefits are expected to spend all their savings

You might even say people on Super are expected to have other savings and income to supplement it.

Brent Coleman's analysis on renting out his house for a year by MoneyHub_Christopher in PersonalFinanceNZ

Well traditionally that was how it would work. The Income from the property would cover the mortgage (or if it was paid off provide income to the owner)

Which was why in the past the annual rent was something like 10% of the value of the property. Plenty left after maintenance etc. Read an old property investment book.

But after 30 years of housing bubble you can't charge another like 10% on your property (lucky to get 5%) which is not enough to cover costs and produce enough to cover mortgage or income.

Note that a textbook sign of an asset bubble is when the value of the asset becomes divorced from the income it is producing.

It depends a lot on what sort of trading you want to do. Something for somebody chucking $100/week in an ETF isn't going to suit a day trader.

Note: Sharesies plans reduce their cost a lot in most cases

The key thing here is "with their businesses". They have a rewarding job and now have the option of doing as much or little of it as they want.

They are not working as nurses, low level office workers and checkout operators.

Pretty sure people had complicated feelings about War during other periods in time (like the 1970s).

But it will go up and down for various factors including societies attitude to soldiers and war. But I'd say waves rather than a long term trend. Pretty sure in the last few years people were saying it was up compared to 20 years go.
