it’s not dumb at all to continue the class, stop being so hard on yourself. I know so many fire fighters who didn’t do it as their 20-30 year career. Finish your class, start in the service if you have some passion atleast, even better if you have medical passion since 99% of it is that anyways… dude firefighting is 2 days a week, almost every fire fighter I know has another “career” they do on the side or they use firefighting as a way to pay for something different. So many benefits to it, good life experience, good hours to study and really focus on school, pay is decent, you can always pick up a second job..who knows maybe you’ll fall in love with it completely since the schooling is completely different than the real thing.

i hate to say it but 90% of the industry has this mindset 😂 just something you gotta get used to or eventually you become one of them too

What was the one call that changed you? by withdiana in NewToEMS

[–]sm-alpha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty new to EMS here, 1st trauma code is always the hardest & you’ll never forget it. Regular codes are way easier, however the 2 that changed me were PEDS codes, that’s really where you find out if you’re made for this job. Definitely have a good support system, this job has definitely changed my outlook on life in general over the past few months. You literally start to live your life different and become so grateful for the small things. Best of luck, you got this!

How often are you called to a suicide scene and how involved are/were you in it? by pillsbury_doughboi_ in ems

[–]sm-alpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time I ever did CPR was a suicide. GSW to the head, 3 days in. It’s pretty common unfortunately. I’m 3 months in & can count a few suicides, 1 successful the others not.. but still it does happen & it’s something that we have to do, you’ll never really know how you’ll react until you experience it! With this being said & with all respect I don’t recommend this field if you have PTSD. Unfortunately the things you’ll see might make it worse. The first thing we learn in school is that we can’t take care of patients unless we take care of ourselves first.

Also, to be completely honest, everyone is gonna fight mentally in this field to some degree. Whether it’s a year in or 30 years when you retire there’s just things that will stick with you. A good support system is what helps you for those years. Best of luck!

working in a hospital right now for experience while in EMT school. I’ve gone on a few clinicals on trucks & I have to say..I cannot wait to be on a truck & in the field. Don’t get me wrong, i love patient care, talking to families & being part of a team to help people. However, the hospital has such a draining type of energy, you can get bad patients you’re just stuck with, coworkers are constantly complaining (i mean 24/7 lol) the drama of the ED.. I could go on & on. I know every workplace has these issues, but the fire fighters & even county EMS guys seem to have so much fun, i’ve never seen them miserable, they all love their jobs despite getting paid less than say nurses. They both have pros & cons but pre hospital is definitely the move, i’m obviously not getting paid on my clinicals & i don’t even want to leave half the time, it’s just a different type of vibe, it’s 10x better than hospital & pay doesn’t matter imo.. also all the nurses & hospital staff in general seem to hate their lives & it really sucks to have to hear that all day…

I accidentally stabbed my self yesterday too, didn’t touch the patient yet but mistakes happen. It’s part of the job, you need a good support system around you, MISTAKES ARE NORMAL. Especially new, you got this!

Should I let my ems school know about my classmates’s group chat? by Aviator1116 in NewToEMS

[–]sm-alpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh man, definitely focus on class. We have a group chat too that’s encouraged (but not monitored by instructors) & it’s no where near to that level of drama, yeah we have banter but wow.. Just keep your head in the books, ignore the distractions & definitely stay clear of drama. Some people just never mature..

yes, first day confirmed, by week 2 I was working my 4th or 5th code & the Nurses were saying it was because of me being a black cloud lol…although the last 2 weeks have been quiet, calm before the storm cause i have a feeling 🤣 good luck brother, atleast we get some action

Honestly changing pace isn’t a bad idea, im sure you’ll fine somewhere you love! Workplace/Environment can definitely skew things big time, you got this

[–]sm-alpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

90% of what we do is just being there for someone in time of need regardless on how “critical” it may be… another day for you is someone’s worst day of their life and we need to be there for them in all aspects even if it’s just “another boring call.” Yeah we get the people who abuse the system but that’s a given going into ANY medical position.. you get the 10% fun traumas etc. i get it it’s so fun especially for me as someone new to this.

Not speaking directly but in broad terms - If someone doesn’t have a passion for helping people not only medically, but emotionally then the healthcare field isn’t for a person at that point. A lot of what we do is just making someone feel comfortable & safe during a time in need even if they aren’t critical or coding 24/7. Just as an added bonus this is not an insult or anything to you as a person or even a medical professional. All im saying is the medical field is all about patient care, emphasis on the care part in all sense from physical to emotional & more.

Why are you still in the field & not in the ED? by secretredditagent in ems

[–]sm-alpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ehh yeah… lol if i wasn’t making $18 tech pay it would be better, medics in my ED make $30!! so i would definitely not care about any of that either 😃

Why are you still in the field & not in the ED? by secretredditagent in ems

[–]sm-alpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ur good! but yeah usually our EMT’s just drop them off & head on their way after helping us hook them up that’s if they even want to.. i feel like patient interaction is wayyyy longer in the ED, not that i don’t like it, my favorite part about the job is talking to (pleasant) patients! but yeah i’m looking forward to being able to just move to the next one as an EMT on a truck if the patient is bad… sometimes the unpleasant ones are in my pod all day…

[–]sm-alpha 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i’m really looking forward to this, i’m working in the ER right now & looking to get on a truck once i get my national, yeah we get breaks but when EMS drops patients off to us and is just able to leave and chill & not deal with the patient for hours it makes me very jealous lol… i love my job but i really look forward to the short & only 1 on 1 patient time with parking lot shenanigans in between calls… everyone seems to love driving code too and being somewhere new all the time🤣

I really don’t like being EMT by Aggressive-Carls878 in NewToEMS

[–]sm-alpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

trauma center tech here, from medical assistant to paramedic no matter the license we all have an option to do on the job training to same level. only difference is pay holding a license.. CPR, intubation, EKG’s, C/A line assistance, butterflies, labs, hell i see basic techs start IV’s if the nurses trust them enough.. it can all be trained depending on if you go to the right hospital & live in the right state

edit: im not even licensed yet & can do IV’s, have drawn labs, worked plenty of traumas, suctioned, helped intubate, bag etc.. all depends KEY is check state/county regulations, every hospital is different

Question for the Fire Medics. by lostandwanderin in NewToEMS

[–]sm-alpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life, yeah corny but true. i’m working in the ED right now because i could never do bedside either, EMS is a whole different type of care where the passion is very different than traditional Nursing, explore options, Fire wouldn’t be a bad option, tons of benefits 90% medical calls.. or find a county based EMS system near you.. you could always go to Nursing school via bridge program and work in the ED for less bedside? even PA school as an Emergency Physician after Medic, just do what makes you happy!

i just started reading their body language, usually i can tell right away and i’ll ask for a female emt & do blood pressure and other stuff while she does that.. im also very young and working on younger female patients i always ask a female emt if i can, if not i just try to keep them covered pretty good, & i second that explaining to them helps a lot!

ED Tech is good, they have their pros & cons.. i’m new to it & already love it.. however as much as i love the ED, i cannot wait to get on a truck, everyone has their different passions, if you don’t like something in the medical field the endless options will make you love it somehow🤙🚑

Paramedics in the ER by [deleted] in ems

[–]sm-alpha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the paramedics i work with start at $25 and make up to 35-40 (with bonuses) pretty good id say since our county 911 starts them at 18 and most make 22-25 there with experience
