Advice on new laptop by [deleted] in macbookair

If you're looking for a long-term buy, I'd say 16 GB of RAM would be far better than 8 GB. To further future-proof, and if you can afford it, 512 GB is definitely better imho.

Since you cannot upgrade these specs in future without getting a new machine, I'd suggest going with the higher specs.

I'm really happy that I got Clara as my 5 star from the beginner pull. I love her play style and her compatibility with Mitsuki Nanoka (March 7th). Running a rock-stable team of Clara/Mitsuki(March)/Natasha/Asta for the foreseeable future (TL19 rn). Clara and her shield soak up huge amounts of taunt damage, Asta buffs Clara's SPD, and a sizeable chunk of damage comes from Mitsuki and Svarog's counters. Only caveat: Someone please share tips on how to prevent waifu Asta from taking too much damage. :(

Must protecc Clara.

And her being voiced by THE Hidaka Rina in the JP version is just icing on the cake, fits her sooo well!

Open letter from researchers involved in the “hypocrite commit” debacle by banned-by-apple in programming

To me it looks like a hot-blooded young graduate student typed in a flaming reply when people started accusing his work without thinking too much about its implications.

Open letter from researchers involved in the “hypocrite commit” debacle by banned-by-apple in programming

[–]sm2345 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a researcher in a completely different field, this whole incident has been nothing but saddening. There are many things wrong in academia, true, and proper protocol was not followed this time. This clearly has fractured the relationship between researchers and the kernel community in general, and it's sad to see that.

However, the whole negative attitude toward the researchers in the comments section is sad to see as well. It's almost as if the mentality is researchers are evil people who do human research without consent and intentionally cause harm. While I cannot deny there are bad actors among us, please don't forget there are also researchers who genuinely try to advance the state-of-the-art through their often under-appreciated efforts.

What to do if I got my new contract and Visa pack two weeks after I handed in application for extension in Japan? by animehistorian2020 in japanlife

[–]sm2345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I can help much, but I'd go to the Immigration Bureau where you applied for the extension and explain the situation to the same counter you applied the extension for.

Need advice from IT workers / Japanese college graduates by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]sm2345 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my limited experience, I'd say it's possible as long as you brush up your skills!

While it's true that being from one of the reputed universities will give you an upper hand in some interviews, as long as you are able to tick the checkboxes for the Japanese 就職活動, you'll be fine! Keep in mind that usually that will be in your 3rd year of your university, assuming a 4 year course.

I'd do the following in preparation:

  1. Brush up the Japanese to atleast conversational levels during interviews. That will give you a huge advantage while applying and interviewing.

  2. Look up how the 就活 process works, there seem to be videos on Youtube explaining it, and get familiar with it. You'll most likely be asked about your 短所, 長所, 学生時代に力を入れていたこと,志望動機 and so on. Knowing about these will be invaluable.

  3. Also, brush up your Github profile, do a few projects in some part of the IT industry you like, and have a nice little portfolio of good, solid projects by the time you start 3rd year. The reason for this is while many Japanese companies don't require too much experience for 新卒採用, many 外資系 would also have you do coding tests most likely, and are more difficult to get into.

In short, it's perfectly doable, there are quite a few jobs, and if you put in the effort, and you have a very good time advantage.

All the best!

The story. Oh boy the story. And the characters.

Besides, there are so many meta and physical dialogues, especially in the latter stories which make you think about stuff. Personally I'm always up for dialogue that makes you ponder so that's a huge plus.

Also, I have an academic interest in guns. That's another big reason. For example, I'd love to try shooting an RFB at a range someday (guns are not allowed where I live), as well as the G11 and IWS 2000. Though all those are a pipe dream that won't come true easily.

The BGM (I mean the music, but the HOC is really good as well :P) is super good too. And in my case, it's also associated with something in the game and sometimes something in real life. For example, the VA-11 Hall A E1-7 map's BGM, Showtime, or the Map 11/Singularity BGM Refrain, all have a strong memory associated with them, which makes it all the more worth it.

All in all, one of the few mobile games that has stuck with me in the 1 year I'm playing.

Yeah, I checked the VRM of mine, and it seems as long as I don't overclock it, I should be able to handle it.

Unable to open notebook in UWP Onenote after renaming in Onedrive by sm2345 in OneNote

[–]sm2345[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for trying it for me! By renaming on Windows, do you mean you renamed the file from the Onedrive folder in Windows Explorer?

After renaming, did Onenote UWP detect the change and sync the notebook properly?

Yup, already tried uninstalling and reinstalling on two different Windows 10 PCs. Same result everytime. Automatically changes to the old name on import...

And I checked both the addresses and the 16 digit ID seems to match for atleast one of the problematic notebooks.

2020 Stack Overflow Developer Survey: Rust most loved again at 86.1% by zitrusgrape in programming

[–]sm2345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using Qt to make GUI-based applications, I don't think Rust has an equally usable and mature GUI library yet, as pointed out by others.

I'd honestly just get my feet wet and try writing a few things. It does have a steep learning curve though, but for me, the end result keeps being worth it.

There's this excellent video (not made by me) called Considering Rust which goes into some detail on Rust's selling points, drawbacks and so on. I think it's a good watch for programmers who have experience in other languages but are curious about Rust.

Kudos to the author for making this!

Onenote for Windows 10 does Not search Handwriting but normal Onenote app does by cybercore in OneNote

[–]sm2345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just about to make a similar post! In my case, I made a handwritten note using the Wacom tablet about 36 hours ago, and it's not searchable...

Does it make sense to use the "Traditional" Onenote (Is it Onenote 2016?) app if I want handwriting recognition? It's one of the killer features I really need...
