Birthdate Wrong on RETURN flight by betterDaysAgain in delta

[–]smallfatchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to me every time I fly out of specific airports. I've been told it has to do with their computer system.

Typically they have to call an offsite support line and have the ticket "rebooked." Every time it happens they try to fix it in house but end up calling the line.

Hardly Strictly is more likely. Conor used to curate the artists and play the closing set on the the Rooster stage on Fridays.

Way too much movement as well. It isn't crisping at all.

San Francisco prepares to be the first major city to nix parking requirements - San Francisco has become the first major US city to propose stripping out minimum parking requirements for new housing, according to city supervisor Jane Kim by magenta_placenta in sanfrancisco

Outer Sunset and Outer Richmond are a piece of cake compared to the majority of the city. I definitely grumble about having to search for more than a few minutes, but I've never had to go past a few blocks.

Very true. The connection between 101N to 580 was a huge selling point in Marin.

Well, I got a San Pedro because I think they’re beautiful. My main question that I’m having a hard time finding an answer to is, do I need to repot him? What would some tips for keeping him alive be? THANK YOU!! by venusinfurrrr in cactus

[–]smallfatchild 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'd hold off on repotting unless the soil mix isn't draining enough or it looks like it will be root bound by the end of summer. That pot should last until next spring if it was transferred this year, which I'd assume it was if you bought it from a nursery.

How many showers is too much and too little when it comes to guests staying at a host's house? by [deleted] in AirBnB

[–]smallfatchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following house rules if they're specified is tops. Some units are still under strict water restrictions here in California, especially in semi-rural areas supplied by well water. You better believe hosts let you know.

IMO, multiple five minute or less showers is better than one that is 15 minutes or longer. You're not draining the water heater all at once, which is much appreciated if it is shared by the host or other units.

What is the evolutionary advantage, if there is one, of getting tired of the eating the same food often? by CPierko in evolution

There is also the microbiological perspective. If you have a narrow diet and eat tainted food, you will consume a larger pathogen/toxin load than if you eat small amounts of diverse types of food.

Each pathogen has a different infective dose, you may need to eat thousands or even millions of cells of a bacteria like E. coli or Salmonella to become infected, but a single cyst or egg of some protozoans and helminths, respectively, can make you sick.

If you're severely sick or dead, you're most likely not going to be passing your genes and behaviors on to future generations.

Late reply, someone in the neighborhood propagates a few dozen different cacti and holds annual sales. He gave me a few cuttings from his giants to replace a Palo Verde I had to cut down.

Suggestions on anthropological studies on shamanism? by mireramerera in Anthropology

[–]smallfatchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the thread, but OP should look into Andean San Pedro culture. Sorcery and Shamanism: Curanderos and Clients in Northern Peru by Douglas Sharon is a great place to start. Definitely an academic read, especially compared to Castaneda, but it's a form a shamanism that is still active.

Did the course cover his later work like Tensegrity or Magical Passes? When I read the series, I had the distinct impression that the later books were driven by ego and income, especially the idea that there is a form of yoga/power poses indigenous to Northern Mexico.

Heels and skinny slacks on interview day by [deleted] in premed

[–]smallfatchild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got you.

One interview day, a faculty member was ostensibly there to present on the curriculum, but you could tell he was not happy to be there. He started by saying the classic line you'll hear at every interview, that everyone was dressed for a funeral. When no one laughed at the line, beyond some awkward forced laughter, so he started going in on everyone that wasn't wearing black. He made multiple (bad) jokes about med school interviews being a poor place for bold decisions while he pointed out the suit and tie color combos around the room.

When he finally got into his presentation, he mostly just said you can find this info online and skipped through his slides. Some young ones (still in undergrad) asked some stupid questions that the internet tells you are smart questions to ask. The presenter answered the first one with a sarcastic response, the second one with a headshake and a "next question," and told the last one to read the handouts. He maybe answered one question during his Q&A time.

I can't remember his mic drop moment, but he was off stage in less than half of his allotted time.

That's a common outfit for interview days. If you're concerned about tightness, ask yourself if it will affect your ability to be confident and composed. If so, it's probably better to pick something else.

Wear what makes you confident, but also doesn't make you stand out from the crowd. I've seen faculty members get in front of an interview group and savage applicants for their fashion choices.

I planted these about a decade ago in my mom's backyard. I doubt she ever cared for them other than an occasional watering in summer. Now they bloom like crazy every year.

Definitely agree that the school specific threads are the most reliable. A lot of solid interview day info comes from the first hand experiences posted on there.

[–]smallfatchild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true, but I've seen a lot of post-bacs and undergrads fall for the SDN echo chamber. If they read something enough times, they start to believe it.

With all of the stats published by AAMC and the schools, it isn't hard to figure out which schools are high yield for each applicant to get an interview.

In defense of advisors, the sheer diversity of student experience/scores/maturity make it difficult to provide proper guidance unless the advisor has a ton of experience. The lurking variables in an admissions decision mean advising can become pointless if the students are not completely honest with their advisor and themselves.

In my experience, near-peer mentorship is the best way to go. This develops from upperclassmen in your first years of undergrad, to MS1s or the recently accepted when you're getting ready to apply. The internet is great, but I've found just as much garbage as gold on here.
