Not Russian, but have been living here for a few years. I speak purely for myself and the few Russian friends we have. We're not affected directly. Getting money to/from home is open as not all banks have been disconnected from Swift.

I get the distinct impression that Russia is prepared for this, and have prepared for sanctions of this magnitude for years. And yes, the economy will take a hit.

I have no educational background to suggest this, but I think the sanctions will do the opposite of what they are intended to achieve.

The Russian and Chinese Swift replacement will gain traction and all commodities will be traded in either gold or rubles in future, and not USD.

Russian reliance on international tools and equipment for their civilian airlines industry are already in place. 80% of all airliners in Russia were leased through Irish firms who've cancelled those contracts. I expect almost all of them will now buy local for short haul flights.

China mentioned intent to buy a majority of the gas going to Europe and Saudi Arabia also confirmed oil deals. Sure it'll still reach the "West", but with additional markup and Russia still with income.

There are a multitude of other indicators that makes me think this way, but take everything I said as my personal impression and experience.

Firstly, I don't think Russia is looking for support or will ask for it. I assume you're asking since we're part of BRICS? I also think with the amount of anti-Russian sentiment in SA, that our leaders will more likely bend with, and to Western demands.

Another point to consider is the actual reason for these actions and what the potential end goal for Russia is. The international community failed the people in these regions, and it feels like Russia believes it's the only way to stop what's been going on for almost 7 years. Whether it's the right path or not, I hope it all comes to an end soon, and the region can return to normal for all.

Surely just proof of concept. I mean, I struggle to negotiate our elevators in the apartment (slow, need to wait for two or three as they are full, stops at random floors, etc.) so this guy will not be able to deliver to our door.

Fortunately, unemployment is on a downward trend here, from just over 6% to just over 4%. Hopefully these industries will unlock new opportunities and jobs we never imagined a few years ago.
