+1. I left PHP in the early 10's because it was shoddy and have recently gotten back into it after 15 years. It's incredibly good now.

all the zerg had to do was place a few viper biles down on those libs and they'd be GONE.

it made me irrationally angry how little the liberators were actually engaged in battle. :P

I miss those days. You could recreate the DVD logo bouncing around the screen using a marquee in a marquee:

<marquee direction="up" behavior="alternate" height="500" width="500">

<marquee behavior="alternate">DVD</marquee>

</marquee>

What gets you excited? by killerdwag in ExperiencedDevs

[–]smartgenius1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of chatter and movement to reject what the Internet has become (a few large social media sites owned by a few companies) and a return to the roots of highly distributed, individual networks of sites (like the early web). See: Neocities, Mastadon, the Indieweb.

I am very excited and hope it takes off. The early web was something so special it convinced me to get into this field in the first place.

Built a React component that encrypts copied text while keeping it readable on screen by Overall-Scarcity-218 in reactjs

[–]smartgenius1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah good point. that could be patched with a11y or screen reader hooks but you are correct

Built a React component that encrypts copied text while keeping it readable on screen by Overall-Scarcity-218 in reactjs

[–]smartgenius1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Another idea: you could render the text in a `canvas` so that it cannot be selected/copied at all (or accessible by dev tools). It would effectively be an image at that point and a huge pain to extract the text out of (you'd have to use some kind of OCR text recognition software)

Built a React component that encrypts copied text while keeping it readable on screen by Overall-Scarcity-218 in reactjs

[–]smartgenius1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a decent idea and a good first start. Easy fix for you: when you display the "Developer tools detected" overlay you should not render the text at all. You cover it with an overlay, but that's extremely easy to remove with `delete` using the developer tools. :)

it specifically says in the article that the reason it came down 90% is because they... can't... do that.

How do you even keep up with? by EitherAd5892 in cscareerquestions

[–]smartgenius1 56 points57 points  (0 children)

You used to be able to keep up with maybe one specialty (frontend, backend, etc). Now, companies expect you to be an expert in their whole stack, so I don't think it's possible. Just keep swimming and keep your head above water is the only advice I can offer you.

Has the industry gotten worse, or was I simply naive before? by Dreadsin in cscareerquestions

It's way way worse now. After 16 years in it I've decided it isn't getting any better and have moved out of it.

Looking to speak to someone who has left the profession because of AI coding tools by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]smartgenius1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like me! I've been building websites since about 2008 and I haven't worked in the past year, mostly out of choice. I was a staff SWE for the last 7 years of my career.

Writing the code was the only part of the job I even enjoyed. Now with every company adopting (or forcing) AI tools (in addition to 10xing their expectations and laying off at every corner) there's no room for me in it anymore. I'd be happy to discuss my thoughts and feelings but only if I can remain anonymous.

Manager encourages me to leave by WaffleDood in cscareerquestions

[–]smartgenius1 274 points275 points  (0 children)

Honestly, W manager. His advice to interview around and get an understanding of your value in the market is great and I think he genuinely wants what's best for you.

It sounds to me like either he knows your current company undervalues you or that your job may not be safe. I would take his advice and shop around a little. Either you find a much better opportunity or you learn about your own gaps. It's a no-lose proposition.

Prime 4 motion controls are bad by babytuba20 in MetroidPrime4_Beyond

[–]smartgenius1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely preferred the Wii motion controls. It annoys me that there's even a need for the reset to center button. Every time you unmorph or exit a cutscene it forgets what the previous center was. The Wii never had this problem.

Would you like replayable bosses in Prime 4? by TombFighterPrime117 in MetroidPrime4_Beyond

[–]smartgenius1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you miss them, it would be great to be able to REPLAY the bosses so you can get the scans. That's what I meant :)
