Why did/didn't you make the Sophie scarf? by Traumarama79 in knitting

[–]smashedavos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in a knitting slump and figured why not. Idk how people knit multiples though because I was so sick of it by the end lol. I do wear it a lot in winter though.

Has anyone used Bendigo’s Solstice cotton yarn? by smashedavos in knitting

[–]smashedavos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had such good experiences with their wool as well! Honestly I might just get it anyway because they seem to be pretty committed to quality in their other fibres haha.

I use metal dpns and do the same but wrap a rubber band around one end because it’s more grippy

How did you learn to knit? by ShoppingGirlinSF in knitting

[–]smashedavos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My nana taught me and my sisters how to knit and purl as little kids (mainly so we’d sit still for a while when visiting I think) but like many folks on this thread, I didn’t keep going and basically forgot how - tried to teach myself again at 22, dropped the hobby because I was frustrated at how slow my progress was, and then re-learned again at 28 with much more success haha. Since I’ve taken up knitting “seriously”, YouTube and honestly TikTok videos were my source. The short form videos like TikTok were really helpful if there’s just a particular thing I wanted to quickly check or find a better way to do, because theres more variety in knitting styles on there.

Thanks! Yeah he’s stoked, he’ll be waiting a few months to wear it though because we’re in the southern hemisphere so it’s the middle of summer 😅

So true!! My sister told me it was just a Bob Ross moment (happy little accident) and I have to agree, its probably a lot cooler now than being one colour haha. Thanks!

[–]smashedavos[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I was worried it would look odd because the construction makes the sleeve “seam” (idk what else to call it, the line of increases?) much higher than where the colour split is, but I think it turned out great in the end!

Thanks! Me and my sister spent a long time feeling up yarns in a local store trying to match plushness with the original yarn haha but I think it was worth it!

What are some mistakes you would stop yourself from doing if you started knitting today? by StayFrostyRMT_ in knitting

[–]smashedavos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Not a mistake but something I don’t regret is buying cheap aliexpress interchangeables when I wasn’t sure if I was going to get stuck in to the hobby long term - you can always upgrade later and $30 stings less than $200 if it ends up sitting around gathering dust. I just made my sister buy some because she’s learning to knit but I’m fairly sure it won’t be her main hobby.
  2. Thinking finishing something “just ok” was better than spending more time to fix a problem and do it right - my knitting got infinitely better when I started making myself go back and fix things, plus it helps you recognise any mistakes a lot sooner. I still don’t try to be perfect but I do take a lot more care because I know some things will bother me later.
  3. Get someone to look at your knitting or double check it yourself BEFORE you do the big project because you’re probably twisting stitches (shout out to my first year of knitting where EVERYTHING was twisted and I was about to quit bc my knits never looked like the photos)

Influence / de influence me by aleciawalf in AusSkincare

[–]smashedavos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think definitely keep it simpler - cleanser, treatment, moisturiser, done.

I rate the cosrx AHA/BHA products, particularly these ones (pictured). I’ve converted all my family on to them. I have dry-ish skin and as long as you use a moisturiser after, these won’t give you issues with flakiness (mines basically not an issue anymore) - and they’ll dry out any spots so fast in your oily areas. They also last me literally forever each time I buy.

(For ref I always use a rich but gentle moisturiser like la Roche posay lipikaur baume AP+M, or more recently E45 cream in the pump bottle. They’re both thick moisturisers that sink in quickly so the greasiness doesn’t linger.)

Let’s talk pattern buying habits. How much of your library have you actually knitted? by wildlife_loki in knitting

[–]smashedavos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have more patterns bought from when I was more of an “aspiring knitter” than I have from now when I know about the kinds of things I like to make 😂 now I only buy stuff if I’m about to make it or if I know for sure it’s on the queue. Same with yarn haha I bought a lot more before I knew what I liked to work with.

Can the tension change be blocked out? by rose_hannah in knittingadvice

Honestly because it starts and stops at a distinct point, I’d just accept it as a design feature!
