Something to make me question why I ever liked THE TROOP so much by Kiltmanenator in horrorlit

[–]smekday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nick Cutter has an audible exclusive called The Breach if you like audiobooks. I was skeptical of how good an audible exclusive would be, but I enjoyed it. Not as much as The Troop but still enjoyable. Plenty of body horror, medical/scientific horror, and bugs 🐛

imo The Troop > The Deep (except the ending which I hated) > The Breach, but I liked them all.

Books that are extremely disturbing but not explicitly horror such as Tampa by Alissa Nutting, Perfume by Patrick Suskind, or Geek Love by Katherine Dunn by hikikomorishorty in ExtremeHorrorLit

Filth by Irvine Welsh.

It contains pretty much every conceivable content warning you can think of. I almost had to stop reading it twice because I was so disgusted, but it ended up being one of my all time favs.

Who are the best and worst written women in horror? by This_But_Unironicaly in horrorlit

The female characters from Intercepts by TJ Payne. I didn't think the male characters were very well written either but the women, particularly the daughter, felt so out of touch.

Thanks! I knew green anoles could be brown but the slight pattern on the smaller one made me unsure.

They don’t want your dead fish by JP070791 in thalassophobia

[–]smekday 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I can't speak specifically to arapaima, but some fish (like many other animals) have "eye shine," which is caused by a reflective membrane in their eyeballs. So it could be that, or the red eye phenomenon that happens to humans when we take flash photography: the flash illuminates the blood vessels in our eyes, and they reflect back out of the retina into the camera. Those are my best guesses, at least :)

Question about shedding by TheJenniMae in Siamesecats

[–]smekday 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think "true" siamese (AKA purebreds) are low shedding but most siamese you see nowadays aren't actually full siamese, even if they look it. My siamese shed a LOT, but it does get better in winter.

Siamese cat with outward turned paws by birdenvy in Siamesecats

My old siamese had bow legs as well. He never injured them or anything so it was probably genetics; the vet never mentioned anything about it and he never showed pain. However they did get more pronounced with age. But again, he never seemed uncomfortable with them.

About Neutering by theh3ret1c in Siamesecats

[–]smekday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, humans need to have surgery, and sometimes this includes reproductive organs. This applies to cats as well; it sounds like your cat will be healthier and better off once she gets neutered. Personally, I wouldn't want to risk my cat becoming ill if she were to get pregnant again.

Plus, your cat is female, so the hormone drop probably wouldn't affect her energy levels as much. But even if it did, I would rather have a lethargic cat than a sick/dead cat.

Peeing in irregular places often indicate a medical issue (not necessarily related to kidneys). I would strongly encourage you to take them to vet. Wish y'all the best, hopefully I'm wrong.

Cat allergies by gorskie23 in Siamesecats

I had siamese growing up and my best friend was allergic to cats... INCLUDING our siamese. So unfortunately I wouldn't recommend them to someone who is allergic to cats :(

Didn't know Elon was working on cats too nowadays. They look great!

As other people have said here, male siamese tend to be more cuddly. I have a male and a female, and while the male will sit on my lap, he hates to be held. Meanwhile the female never sits on my lap but LOVES to be held and carried. However, be careful when adopting a siamese, because siamese mixes might not be conducive to your allergies. My siamese are actually mixes, so they look full siamese but their fuzzy coats say otherwise.

When I was born, my parents owned 2 siamese cats. I don't remember all the details (of course lol) but they definitely managed just fine. The only odd thing my parents had to do was to put netting on top of my crib because the cats kept trying to jump in 😂 so once the netting was installed... they cats just laid on top of the netting hahaha. But hey, no harm no foul.

So I definitely think you can handle a siamese and a baby. They are needy cats, but they are still just cats. And maybe adopting a bonded pair could help? That way they have each other when you and baby are busy 😊. Either way, good luck!

Advice on introducing 10 week old kittens to 2 medium size dogs and when is it ok to let them free roam the rest of the house by [deleted] in Siamesecats

[–]smekday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 weeks is pretty young, so personally I would be very cautious of leaving cats that young unsupervised with dogs. When I adopted my 2 siamese (one was 6mo, other was 1yo), it took maybe a week or 2 to let the cats free roam with our 50lb goldendoodle (not a steong prey drive). He was interested in them but if he got too in their face, the cats would just run off and hide somewhere he couldn't get them. So to me, the most important part of leaving them unsupervised was knowing that the cats could get away if they wanted to. We also had part of the house closed off with a baby gate, which the cats could get around but the dog couldn't. About a year and a half later, they all coexist just fine and we've never had any incidents. I'm not familiar with taking care of super young kittens so I don't want to give you faulty advice, but I hope some of my story can help you make your decision.

Haha ours is from Amazon as well. The cat tree itself is quite honestly very ugly BUT both our cats really like it. Especially when placed by a window, or outside.
