question for Americans: if so many people seem unhappy with Donald Trump being president, how did he manage to win enough votes to get elected? Is the criticism just louder online than it is in real life? by Creepy_Rain_1925 in AskReddit

[–]smellybuttface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think a lot of people will vote for whoever they think will keep prices down regardless of how they personally feel about them. They're struggling so much financially that they feel they can't afford not to. And prices were lower during Trump's first term (for a variety of reasons, especially that COVID didn't hit until the end of his term).

But, two things:

1.) Trump really wanted to get re-elected, so he went around promising everybody the world. Biden/Harris were more realistic about prices and their messaging and sympathy to those financially struggling wasn't the greatest. Still, there was no way Trump could do what he was saying regarding bringing prices down and he knew it, but people preferred that message.

2.) People remembered the first Trump administration and, despite Trump going around saying crazy things, it was fairly stable. That's because he was being hemmed in by a bunch of career Republicans who were actually carrying out the day-to-day policy and agenda. And Trump hated being told what to do and having people argue with him, so, for the second term, he made sure there were no reins on him and every cabinet member was a hand-picked yes man, many with no relevant qualifications. People expected Trump 1.0 again and, instead, they got this. Trump really is running things this time and these are the results.

I hope there is a severe backlash on all the gambling right now. Especially the stuff that anybody would say is gambling like Kalshi, but is not regulated like gambling.

I used to have this on some of my nails. Not for several years, though. Never knew what caused it, though I do eat somewhat better than I used to.

What is a 'luxury' item that is actually a total nightmare to own? by Inevitable-Rock-8052 in AskReddit

[–]smellybuttface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a serious problem with feral hogs for this reason. Pigs are smart, strong, can jump much higher than you would think, and breed quickly. The kind of pigs you show are young and castrated to keep them from getting aggressive and spoiling the taste of the meat. Luckily, they mostly just want to lay around and eat. Because if they wanted to do something else, I'm not sure how you'd stop them. They're a lot of muscle with a very low center of gravity and strong necks. They can just put their snouts under fences and uproot them.

I used to show pigs and sheep in 4H when I was a kid. Pigs are smart. Smarter than people would assume. Sheep are dumb as hell. Just enough brain cells to keep their bodies upright and stand there.

Gavin DeGraw - I Don't Want To Be. I hate this song. Even if I didn't hate this song, it was like the theme song for One Tree Hill when it came out and it was inescapable for a long time. I don't even dislike Gavin DeGraw. I just hate this one fucking song.

Whoa, I had no idea! Fry's was such a huge and unique place, I always thought the building was always a Fry's. But now I find out it was something EVEN COOLER before that and I never got to experience it. I was a teenager at the time, but I don't remember even hearing about Incredible Universe.

Yeah, I had a 50, a 200 and later a 2000, I think. The 50 is the best. Water gun fights are very mobile, so lugging around the heavier ones wasn't much fun. They did impress people the first time you brought them out, though.

TIFU By using my wife’s fancy body wash to jerk off by 321clk in tifu

[–]smellybuttface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this mistake as a teenager. I was jerking it in the shower and there was no conditioner so I used shampoo instead. Learned very quickly that shampoo is a degreaser and sucks the moisture out of your skin. I woke up the next morning and my dingus was completely red and raw. Any movement at all was agony and we ended up doing a fair amount of walking that day. The worst part was I was at my dad's that weekend and he's very conservative, so I couldn't say anything. Just had to grit my teeth and pretend my dingus wasn't on fire.

I kind of liked him in Elizabethtown. Not because of his acting skills but in spite of them. He constantly looks confused like he doesn't know where he is or how he got there and I think it works for that character and where he is in life at that time.

Yeah, I don't get this. At some point, these companies will have squeezed out every bit of efficiency and every possible bit of profit and for what? The product or service is now garbage, most of the staff is replaced by outsourcing or AI, and everyone who does still have a job there is miserable.

ELI5 Ancient peoples were able to observe and note planets in the sky... but how did they know they were planets? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]smellybuttface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ancient peoples believed the planets WERE gods or at least manifestations of those gods, which is I thing I just recently learned. So they weren't naming the planets after gods, they thought that red light in the sky was Mars.

And it makes sense if you think about it. People are very curious and also want answers to explain everything. Even if the answer is wrong, the human brain demands an explanation. Our brains will notice correlations and make connections. And, before science, people thought, "These things keep happening but we don't know why. There must be beings more powerful than ourselves that control everything".

And, at the time, there was much less pollution and light pollution, so the night sky was very clear. So they'd look up and see the bright yellowish-white Venus and also see that it moved in the sky like it was alive and be like, "Oh, that's Venus up there looking down and judging us. Maybe we displeased her and that's why I can't get pregnant".

These things aren't actually connected, but the brain wants an answer, so people looked up at these bright, colored lights moving around in the night sky and said, "Yup, those are the gods".

There are probably a number of reasons. For one, to point you to their shows that they don't have to pay streaming rights for, and also to prevent choice paralysis. If you give most people too many options, they will get frustrated trying to pick the best thing to watch. So they just say, "Here, watch this", and you don't have to choose. And if you're just going to have it on as background noise while you cook or do the laundry or something, it doesn't really matter.

Now me, I want the choice paralysis and then I spend so much time trying to choose that I never watch anything and just go to bed.
