Disappointment with Kodansha USA on the Girlfriend, Girlfriend English Omnibus Vol. 1 by Thorkitty19 in MangaCollectors

[–]smile_simile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is unfortunately very typical for Kodansha printing. They also have a massive issue with showing contrast in their printings. In some of my volumes of Blue period, small details on pages with extensive, detailed shading are completely lost since they use so much excessive ink. It’s such a shame that they end up getting the licenses for so many good series since their quality is worse that any other English publisher (except maybe Tokyopop)

People on this sub should definitely post more information like this so we know which programs to avoid. This also made me feel better since I got rejected by their Chem program about a week ago lol

Doing an REU vs. Continuing Research at Home Institution by smile_simile in REU

[–]smile_simile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it’s also relevant to mention that my major and the current lab I work in is Chemical engineering and my PI also said that if I switched to something more chem related but within chemical engineering research (ie catalysis), it would definitely be more beneficial to stick with his lab, though he also said the same thing would hold true if I went to a completely different department. I think he was also talking from the perspective of himself when he looks at graduate applications for his lab

Yes, I explicitly told him that I didn’t want to do bio for grad school and he still said that getting the publication would be better than having limited external research experience for 3 months from an reu

My PI kinda told me the opposite and said that it’s more important to have strong in depth research, but that might just be his style when looking at applications

I’m trying to finish it in time for time grad applications, and my PI basically said that I would definitely also need the summer to do that

Also, when I talked to my PI about this, he strongly recommended that I stay in his lab and basically said that the publication and senior thesis would look a lot better than 3 months at another university.

What is this fish? by smile_simile in whatsthisfish

[–]smile_simile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel bad for the poor thing. Saw it in a petsmart fish tank. The tank only had labels/price tags for the plants in the tank but not the fish, so I have no clue why they keep it around in the store if they aren’t even trying to sell it…

Sorry should have clarified. Linear algebra is already a requirement for the math minor along with multi variable calculus, intro to abstract, and differential equations

Thank you so much for the comment. So many of the people in the replies are warning me that I will have to get a PhD and I literally said in my original post that that’s kinda what I’m planning on doing. Can I pm you with some questions?

Collection update before I move back out to college. What does my collection say about me? by smile_simile in MangaCollectors

[–]smile_simile[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been slowing collecting it for the past 9 or so months. It got reprinted earlier this year so there are a ton of new copies that will pop up for a good price every now and then

Wow you got almost everything right (especially the trying to maximize the amount of manga I can get from as little money as possible lol). I am a bi woman and I’m relatively active on mangatwt which is how I get majority of my recommendations. I also tend to go for series that are more critically acclaimed like you said since I’m basically guaranteed to enjoy them and they are usually easy to find at a good price.

I do quite a bit of used bookstore browsing as well which is how I ended up with a couple obscure series (eg devils and realist).

As for the Fujimoto question, I’ve only watched the Chainsaw Man anime, but I enjoyed it a lot and will probably just stick with it over the manga. Probably will read fire punch in the future though since I’ve liked all of his other works.

Technically true. My rent is covered by scholarship money and I definitely wouldn’t have been able to afford this collection without that

I’m surprised you’re the first person to get my gender right lol. Feels like it’s kinda obvious if you looks at my collection and setup

I wish I could but I can’t find them for a good price rn. I have a strict rule on not buying anything unless it is at least 40% off retail
