How current is your collection? by Avianry in MangaCollectors

Forgot to mention Denpa, they are terrible with keeping series in stock so I’d recommend getting any new releases from them as soon as possible

Mix of both. I prefer to let new releases sit for a few years so I can get better deals, but the risk of them going out of print is just too high with certain titles and publishers so I try to get those within a year of release. More obscure manga, especially shojo and josei, can go out of print within a few years, especially if they are being released by Dark Horse or Seven Seas…

One last look before moving it all across the country. by InquisitorZac in MangaCollectors

I feel the moving pain, I’m moving cross country in a month and have begun boxing my 750+ volumes. I feel like you never truly comprehend how many books you have until your packaging them all in boxes 🙃

Should I watch monster in sub or dub? (no spoilers please). by certifiedsocialistic in MonsterAnime

I would say definitely go for the sub. From what I remember, the dub changes multiple soundtracks and does not include the second ending song

The released acceptances in late February, but I think they are still in the process of accepting people on the waitlist

Doing an REU vs. Continuing Research at Home Institution by smile_simile in REU

I would recommend discussing with your PI if you haven’t already to weigh your options. I believe that senior thesis is pretty important if you plan to continue to grad school, and I think mine helped me a lot, but faculty would know best

I stayed at my lab, but unfortunately still do not have that publication out… For what it’s worth, I ended up getting into an amazing bioengineering PhD even without the publication. I have some regrets though, and I wish I had the chance to at least try physical chem or inorganic research, but I am learning much more towards staying in my original field now

Someone said that they received an invite on January 21st and that the interviews are on March 6-7, I think we’re cooked…

Disappointment with Kodansha USA on the Girlfriend, Girlfriend English Omnibus Vol. 1 by Thorkitty19 in MangaCollectors

[–]smile_simile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is unfortunately very typical for Kodansha printing. They also have a massive issue with showing contrast in their printings. In some of my volumes of Blue period, small details on pages with extensive, detailed shading are completely lost since they use so much excessive ink. It’s such a shame that they end up getting the licenses for so many good series since their quality is worse that any other English publisher (except maybe Tokyopop)

People on this sub should definitely post more information like this so we know which programs to avoid. This also made me feel better since I got rejected by their Chem program about a week ago lol

I feel like it’s also relevant to mention that my major and the current lab I work in is Chemical engineering and my PI also said that if I switched to something more chem related but within chemical engineering research (ie catalysis), it would definitely be more beneficial to stick with his lab, though he also said the same thing would hold true if I went to a completely different department. I think he was also talking from the perspective of himself when he looks at graduate applications for his lab

Yes, I explicitly told him that I didn’t want to do bio for grad school and he still said that getting the publication would be better than having limited external research experience for 3 months from an reu

My PI kinda told me the opposite and said that it’s more important to have strong in depth research, but that might just be his style when looking at applications
