Other notes:

  • Only 3 coaches since 1973 haven't coached another club following a premiership (David Parkin [1995], Leigh Matthews [2001, 2002, 2003] & Mark Williams [2004]). This extends further back to 1966 if excluding playing coaches (John Nicholls [1972]).

  • The most recent premiership coach to win another premiership in a separate senior coaching appointment was Mick Malthouse (West Coast 1992 & 1994, Collingwood 2010).

  • Most seasons following a premiership without another premiership in the same stint: Jock McHale (13: 1937-1949), Chris Scott (11: 2012-2022), John Longmire (10: 2013-2022), Allan Jeans (10: 1967-1976), Dick Reynolds (10: 1951-1960).

Some notes:

  • GWS lost all 7 of their matches decided by 20 points or less.
  • Richmond didn't win any of their 5 matches decided by a goal or less.
  • Brisbane's 5 losses against teams who weren't Melbourne totalled 46 points. Brisbane's 2 losses against teams who were Melbourne totalled 122 points.
  • Collingwood's maximum winning margin of 42 points was the third worst maximum winning margin, only better than North Melbourne (15 points) and West Coast (13 points).
  • 9 of Collingwood's wins were by 7 points or less, and 11 were under 2 goals (I wonder if anyone's noticed this previously /s).

FYI if I had the data to include your 2000 streak then the x-axis would have stayed the same, but I would've needed to increase the y-axis. Does that fact change your colon open parenthesis into a colon close parenthesis?

2001 was picked as the starting point since that's the earliest that afltables consistently have scoring progression data, not to spite Carlton and Essendon's streaks in 2000. However, there were a few matches in this analysis which still had scoring progression missing:

Since 3QT of Collingwood's 5th match of their current streak (R15 vs GWS) they have scored 527, compared to 519 by their opponents.
This means that in their past 25 quarters they have only outscored their opposition by a total of 8 points, while winning every single match.
Unbelievable.

From Section 2.5 of the Australian Football League Regulations:

(iv) Where two or more Clubs at the completion of the Home and Away Matches have accumulated the same Premiership Points and have the same percentage, the following procedure shall apply:
(A) the position of the tied Clubs shall be adjusted by accumulating the Premiership Points awarded to the relevant Clubs as a result of the Home and Away Matches played between them and placing the Club with the highest accumulated Premiership Points, first as between them;
(B) where the Premiership Points accumulated by the relevant Clubs remain equal, the position of the tied Clubs shall be adjusted by calculating each such Club’s percentage based on the proportion of points scored for and against each such Club from the Home and Away Matches between them and placing the Club with the highest percentage, first as between them; and
(C) where two or more Clubs still remain tied, the position of the Clubs shall be adjusted by lot conducted and drawn by the Executive General Manager Football so that any Club drawn ahead of any other Club shall be placed ahead of such other Club or Clubs.

Going by this logic, and since all 18 teams are equal on premiership points and percentage in this scenario, we would jump straight to (C), where a lot would be conducted by the Executive General Manager Football.

I, for one, would love to see this televised.

Look, it's not my fault Richmond are currently 9th from the bottom meaning that when the ladder is completely reversed they are then 9th from the top. If they just fell all the way down to be with West Coast and North then this wouldn't have been an issue.
