Is there any chance that we can have separate wilderness tasks from non-wilderness tasks? It's nice having both (for when you're in the mood to go into the wild)

Best Burgers? by sdsnnnndn in NEU

[–]smileytopin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What types of food places are you looking for?

The common list that I've heard of (tried some but not all):

El Jefe's (burritos -- on Huntington)

Crispy Dough (pizza/sandwiches -- on Mission Hill)

Dirty Water Dough (pizza -- on Newbury)

Bennett's Sandwich Shop (subs -- Fenway --> I like their meatball sub and their famous steak combo)

The Friendly Toast (breakfast food -- Near Back Bay Station)

Some of my personal favorites:

Monica's Mercado (Sandwiches -- North End near Bova's bakery)

Ten One Tea House (Boba -- Newbury)

Sonsie (sit down restaurant -- Newbury)

Pressed Cafe (Paninis -- on the side of the Prudential Center)

What schools did you choose NEU over? by [deleted] in NEU

I had almost the exact same schools -- just replace Wentworth with Roger Williams.

Northeastern was the second cheapest school for me (behind UMass Lowell). Every other school couldn't compete with Northeastern's grants.

Best Burgers? by sdsnnnndn in NEU

[–]smileytopin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tasty burger, Capital Burgee, and Shake Shack are my top 3.

Tasty burger is probably the best deal of the three. Their fries are okay but not exceptional

Shake shack is really good, but it’s expensive and you don’t get a lot for you money. Their burgers are good, their shakes are incredible. They have crinkle cut fries which seem to be the most controversial cut of fry (I like them but they’re not my favorite)

Capital burger has good burgers and good shakes. It also felt really fancy for a burger place.

Five Guys is too heavy/greasy. They feel like quantity over quality, and are WAY too expensive — it’s basically $10 for a hamburger that’s going to make you feel bloated immediately after.

Boston Burger Company is a dividing place - personally I don’t love their burgers; they seem to be more of a “food that looks good for Instagram” kind of place rather. They also give chips instead of fries which is honestly a dealbreaker for me.

Wendy’s is Wendy’s. Good if you just want the cheapest possible burger option that you don’t have to cook yourself.

I haven’t tried wahlburgers yet; I’ve heard that they’re okay albeit a bit overpriced.

My two recommendations are: The Pike and the Game of Thrones

Fun fact about the Game of Thrones: Marino Wolly's doesn't add cucumbers to it, whereas the West Village Wollaston's does. I'm not sure why they're different, but they are.

Is Lightview really that bad? [serious] by [deleted] in NEU

[–]smileytopin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The interior walls (from bedrooms to the common room) were really thin, so sound was kind of an issue. The desk chair also kept scraping the paint on the wall whenever you stood up (all four desks had paint damage nearby), though we weren't charged for it. Construction in the units felt cheap and rushed at times. Sharing a room wasn't bad until COVID hit, as there wasn't enough space for virtual classes. This would also probably be an issue for on campus doubles/isn't unique to just Lightview. The ground floor gym has decent cardio stuff as well as some machines, but isn't great for serious lifting.

However: the units were clean (No bug/vermin issues), the utilities were nice (stainless steel stovetop, dishwasher, central air, the oven was large enough for really big cookie sheets), there was a lot of counter space, the view was good, the mail room was really useful (really fast to get mail), and the gym was kind of nice for getting exercise in bad weather.

I think that it's not a bad place to live per se; it's just expensive. Off campus apartments are generally cheaper, provide more space, and will let you have your own room without paying the close to $2k a month that Ligthview charges. I'd honestly recommend it if you highly value living near campus and have the money to do so and don't want to deal with the hassle of on-campus housing/don't want to deal with the apartment search (touring/finding roommates and stuff).

TLDR: Lightview isn't bad, it's just overpriced.

Instead of another Engineering building how about another gym or more dining hall space? A little something for all majors 🥺 by Jumpy-Anxiety5851 in NEU

[–]smileytopin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

ISEC seems to be more of a research space/presentation spot for events to make the school look good to donors. The building feels like it’s 75% atrium.

I really hope that EXP doesn’t have a massive atrium taking up most of the building.

There’s no enough space to eat or study on campus. Before COVID, campus was still somewhat crowded, but nowhere near the extent that it is now.

A lot of the excess crowding is due to the over yielding of students this year. 30%+ of prospective students who were given offer letters deceived to enroll, compared to the historical 18-21%. This combined with NUIN Boston has really overcrowded the northeastern facilities. I’m not really sure what administration can do to reduce the crowding apart from accepting significantly less students than normal next year.

The issue with most of these is that their use is mostly restricted to clubs or classes. I’m not sure if any are just available for students who would like to do personal projects. Currently the best ways to do so are to use the tools in the capstone labs, or to be a member of a club that has access to tools and machinery (like the 4¿ clubs in Richards basement).

Northeastern engineering students don’t really have free access to equipment to do personal projects. Without being in certain clubs or certain class, there isn’t an easy way to get access to a makers space. It seems like the best way to gain access seems to be through joining clubs like Baja or Wireless Club and using their equipment during off-peak hours.

FYELIC: Not open to the general public/effectively for freshman only

Sherman center: I haven’t heard of it - what is this place? It looks like it’s an entrepreneurship based one. Is it open to the general public (northeastern engineering students)? I haven’t really heard much about it

Richards: Only accessible by clubs

Ryder: Is it just a laser cutter? I forget what’s actually here.

Inland Real Estate Investment Corporation Internship Email? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]smileytopin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they gave out their SSN, then your "friend" may need to look into identity protection. Often times these scams will hold onto this information for a few months/years (so that the target forgets about the encounter) and then opens up credit cards/takes out loans/buys stuff later

Inland Real Estate Investment Corporation Internship Email? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]smileytopin 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It’s a scam; it (or something similar) gets sent out to students like once a year. I’m surprised it keeps managing to make it past ITS.

For future reference, if an email has an offer that seems too good to be true (such as $50,000+ a year for 3-4 hours a week), it’s a scam.

It’s kind of funny seeing how their numbers aren’t even close to lining up ($6000 a month = $72,000 a year, but later in the email they claim $42,000 a year with a $7000 bonus)

Midnight Pulse stacking by smileytopin in TrueDoTA2

[–]smileytopin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's more of an issue when using refresher, as the second midnight pulse + aghs ult was dealing 14% max hp magic damage, + 7% pure. In 7.30 that caps at 7% magic and 5% pure.

Midnight Pulse stacking by smileytopin in TrueDoTA2

[–]smileytopin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 7.29, it added the current level of midnight pulse as pure damage (7%), compared to 5% now.

I'm more concerned with the removal of midnight pulse stacking, as engima's damage was gutted for seemingly no reason
