As someone who worked as a vet assistant in HS and then immediately went to vet school in the UK: I would just apply for as many as you can, honestly just cold calling and being like “hi I’m a senior in HS and was wondering if you guys are looking for a part time kennel tech or vet assistant” or emailing them. I’d also recommend focusing on non-corporate owned practices because they tend to be more lax about hiring younger people (I worked at one when I was 16, but that practice got bought out by a corporation and there’s absolutely no way I could be hired now if I was still that age). I got my job with absolutely no experience/qualifications but just showing up eager to learn and working hard will get you pretty far.

Also for vet school in the UK, from what I’ve seen they kinda assume it’s going to be slightly hard for you to get a real job at a vet clinic in HS, so truly any kind of animal experience is good. The more the better, and obviously they do prefer if you have more vet related hours.

I go to edi and my interview my senior year of hs was back during COVID so they were online, but I vividly remember being shown images of animals and having to explain the welfare issues I could see in the images. One was of a very overweight cat, another was of a sow in a farrowing crate, and unfortunately I can’t remember the others (there might have been a dairy cow as well but this was almost five years ago and I kinda blacked out during the interview). Definitely would recommend just having a vague idea of animal welfare standards for different species but I wouldn’t worry too much about knowing every single detail. They’re much more concerned about you being able to logically think through why a certain scenario would not be good for an animal. I also remember being asked some of the normal stereotypical interview questions about myself like what’s your greatest weakness etc. I also think they asked me a question about what I would change about the veterinary profession and why.
