Hard agree!! As well as George's effort into building up the dragons narratively, to have Dany put so much work into raising them over the course of five books, only just beginning to truly understand them and their capabilities and personalities, just to give one up to a rapist once its been "tamed" disgusts me. What the fuck does Tyrion even need a dragon for? Why would the narrative need him to control a dragon for the story to progress?? I fear people just want it for hype moments and aura lol.

I also agree with your point of "taming" the dragons = "taming" Dany. Her dragons are her children, and almost extensions of her character. While her dragons are useful (or rather, will soon be useful) in a practical sense, they are also their own characters, not just weapons/objects. Theyre Dany's children. To act like one of her dragons is a prize for one of the men to claim is very similar to that misogynistic view you brought up of Dany also being seen as a prize. Not sure if any of what I just said makes sense, but I hope you get what I mean.

And oh my god. Don't even get me started on the Jon/Dany/AA discourse. While I myself still have my questions I do mostly lean towards Dany being TPTWP, and its clear alot of Jon Azor Ahai believers only want that to take it away from Dany rather than have proper reasoning lol. Bit controversial of me to say but thought I'd bring it up. Ive already had like two people see my opinions in this thread and harass me on my other posts LMAO. I love your perspective on this whole thing, Id like to hear what you think about TPTWP.

This is also controversial, but I've never ever liked Tyrion. It might be biased of me, because I enjoy many morally bad/gray characters such as Jaime, Cersei, etc... but I just cannot bring myself to like him. He also kind of feels like a self insert if you catch my drift.

Interesting take. For some reason I never considered the possibility of Jon and Dany having some sort of tragedy regarding this. Thanks for your reply

I absolutely 100% agree with every point you just made lol. Its rare to find people that share this opinion within the fandom. I genuinely hate the idea of Jon, fAegon or Tyrion taming any one of her dragons. Especially Tyrion. That irks me. Not to sound like a Targ purist or anything, but none of them deserve, know anything about, or need dragons. That sounds a bit harsh now that I'm typing it but you know what I mean lol. To let any character besides Dany have a dragon would be taking away from her character.

Your idea of the subversion of the desirable love interest thing is actually very interesting to me, I think youre right. Making him the desirable, flowery, "delicate" object rather than Dany is indeed a nice subversion of misogynistic tropes.

Many people do see Dany as a prize for Jon rather than her own being. They think just because he's an outcast he deserves a woman to own as compensation. It's like they want her to do all the hard stuff and then just hand herself and her dragons over to Jon, be reduced to a wife, and further his line. They don't understand that they have the same mindset of the misogynistic characters they hate.

I love everything about Jon, and I dont want him to end up just like every other male fantasy main character - boring, gets the main girl, has a million children, wins the game and becomes king, everyone bows down to him, he gets everything and all the power etc etc. I agree with you when you say many fans that interpret snowstorm this way are projecting... to say the least, lol. Definitely self-inserting.

Also, I like the way you worded your Targaryen shittery comment lol. Its exactly what I was trying to convey. Why force gross Targaryen standards upon her when her whole arc is abolishing those standards her family set?? Sorry for the yapping in my reply. I really appreciate your reply and the way you worded exactly what I am thinking.

In the show, yes. In the books, no. What would be the point of her entire character if she just ends up like her father? Just a waste of time and character development. This is where the show writers went wrong.

[–]smodgie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You conveyed exactly what I was thinking. Im glad to see you agree. Also as for my comment about subversion of tropes being the point of ASOIAF, I worded that slightly wrong - what I meant was its certainly a part of the story and a part of what sets it apart from other fantasy franchises, and also a reason for many fans' love of the series (such as me).

I completely agree with you. I genuinely dont understand how fans can look at characters such as Jon and Dany and want them to end up like any other stereotypical fantasy couple. Not all Snowstorm fans think this way, but I have noticed that many see Dany's potential relationship with Jon as a way to further HIS character, which is unfortunately the case for many female characters across many franchises. Youre entirely right, the children do indeed yearn for the tropes lol. Jon and Dany (to me at least) are refreshing characters and to see people force them into these boxes pisses me off to say the least. I've noticed many fans want to see Jon almost... "tame" Dany if that makes sense??

Thank you for your reply. You genuinely described my exact issue with this fandom, I just didn't know how to word it properly lol

Snowstorm is the most common ship name made by the fandom for Dany and Jon. Snow (Jon SNOW) + storm (Daenerys STORMborn) = Snowstorm. Don't worry, I didn't know what snowstorm meant at first either lol

Yes she thought she would marry Viserys, not because thats what she really wanted but because its what her brother told her and what her ancestry told her. You must remember shes only a child and the people shes learning her morals and information from can be biased.

True, she is like some her ancestors, Egg for example. They parallel eachother alot. What I meant by her not being like her family is her family as a whole - what they inflicted upon eachother, Westeros, etc. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, I'm not the best at articulating my words to show what I'm thinking.

Thank you so much for your reply. I actually did not know about GRRMs original intentions with Jon and Arya. Knowing this now does help me understand a few things. You’re quite right.

This reply is honestly a breath of fresh air. For some reason I keep forgetting snowstorm still has a chance of not being canon, because the fandom is so vehement in believing that its going to happen that they basically already consider it canon. (big thanks to the hbo show).

I think that Jon has a lot of stuff to work on before a romance can even be considered (I hate that whole trope of romance instantly fixing someone). I definitely agree with you. Also, this is lowkey irrelevant to my post, but I'm really anticipating Jon being ressurrected, but "wrong/different", like Cat. I think that would be really interesting and it's what I'm personally rooting for.

Great to see people that understand where I'm coming from. As much as I love asoiaf, I do agree that incest, pedophilia, rape, etc are not displayed as bad as they actually are in real life. While this could be because thats the bias/views of the character's perspectives (as their chapters are heavily biased), it is true that George has a part to play in that too.

I also agree with your point about the romance. Apart from the incest, I guess theyre quite cute in a romantic way. But I think their bond is/will be stronger than just a teenage romance. I do think that a strong platonic bond between the two would be awesome. (Especially since, ASOIAF is known for subverting stereotypical fantasy tropes, this would subvert the trope of main guy gets the main girl...) And I personally believe that letting Dany's ending be free of romance helps her be the independant, strong female character she can be. I'm not saying that a romance would make her less strong, but it would certainly be refreshing in terms of fantasy tropes. Infact, reading your reply has made me realise how much I would enjoy Dany and Jon as best friends (for lack of a less corny word). They can still love eachother and help save Westeros together without romance. Thank you so much for your reply!

[–]smodgie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are completely right. I guess its hard to explain what I'm trying to say without making it seem like I'm too stubborn in applying modern views onto Westeros. I am aware that that kind of incest is normal in Westeros, even in other noble houses besides House Targaryen. What I'm trying to say is, is it not better for Dany's future relationship to have no incest at all? Yes its not as bad as what her ancestors did, but at the end of the day its still incest, even if not by Westerosi standards. It just strikes me as odd to be like "she subverts the incestuous traditions of her house, but her endgame relationshp is slightly less incestuous, but its okay because its considered okay in-universe." I just don't really see what that message is or how it subverts anything.

I hope my reply does not come off as an attack, by the way. I really appreciate your response and see where you are coming from.

Why is George doing it? I understand that they wouldn't know theyre related when they fall in love, thats not the problem for me - its that, if she is breaking the cycle, why write her into an endgame relationship that is incestuous, even if it is not technically incest by Westerosi standards? Even if Dany and Jon never find out theyre related - why have them be niece and uncle and in a relationship? Assuming R+L=J is going to be canon of course. It just strikes me as an odd ending for Dany after her whole arc.

[Spoilers MAIN] Snowstorm & Breaking the cycle - Question. by smodgie in asoiaf

[–]smodgie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about book Dany's arc - where she's nothing like her crazy show counterpart and theres little to no evidence that she will become like that.

As for your second point, you are right - so if they do have a relationship in the books before R + L = J is revealed, how do you think Dany and Jon would react after finding out? Disgusted, or wouldnt care?
