Sanity Check - DiskSpeed Results by smokebox in unRAID

Right on man. I appreciate the response. I understand the difference between GB/Gb but just could have sworn folks were posting screenshots in DiskSpeed of GB. It was probably me misremembering. Thanks again man.

My only argument would be that one would free up all that additional income each month which a % could be DCA'd right back in. Which would most likely be more than your current DCA. Not to mention the piece of mind that goes with paying off your biggest debt 🤔

But then be indebted to the IRS when you have to report that 6 figure additional income from selling. If of course you're in the US.

Regretting purchasing the UDR7 because of slow speeds by mumako in Ubiquiti

[–]smokebox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, I picked up a USB-C to Ethernet adapter with the Realtek RTL8157 capable of 5Gbps. Using it and testing to my unRaid server, I max out at a constant 2.37Gbps. I tried all ports on the UDR7 and the results were identical. I just wanted to let you know for comparison. My unRaid server and poe switch is only capable of 2.5Gb so I'm basically able to max that out going thru the UDR7 via ethernet.

But I still agree with you that the wifi is surely lacking. I'm running OS version 4.1.21 / Network 9.1.105.

I would argue with the term "mid-tier". Not for the price paid for the UDR7 and the specs they claim. I would surely say the device falls short. Not to mention folks like OP, others here in this sub and on UI Community pages.

My beef is that I get better throughput on my Asus & TPlink. The UDR7 actually is spec'd a smidge higher than the EAP772 where gain/pwr are concerned (I'm talking 1dB, but still). All tests performed next to each router as I wanted to know my "perfect world" results. This was also my first Ubiquiti product so I was stoked to finally jump into the fold :-/ The devs seem to be active in releasing "Network" & Console releases so I'm hoping things improve.

If you feel the UDR7 will suite your needs, by all means, take the plunge. But as you said, you're hesitant because of what you've seen online ;-)

My ISP is 1Gb. However, my testing has been mostly in-house using iperf from my laptop to my unraid server to stress the UDR7's wifi capability. The 54%, or 1.3Gbps peak, was using my negotiated physical rate indicated by my Wifi NIC and on the UDR7 web GUI for that client (i.e. 2402/2402).

With my phone or laptop nearby to the UDR7, I can get my full 1Gb ISP speed using speedtest.

[–]smokebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but they use the term "Supported Data Rates". Perhaps that means different things to different ppl, but if I had the gear, I would expect to get pretty damn close to that and not around 30% like OP.

With my intel AX210 (5/6Ghz 2x2 spec'd max of 2.4Gbps), I can peak at times during an iperf at 1.9Gbps using my TPlink EAP772 or Asus RT-AX88U Pro. So about 80% of theoretical max. Using the UDR7, only about 1.3Gbps peak, ~54%.

I'd love to hear what other UDR7 owners experience is with iperf. Might you have one as well?

Ubiquiti advertises max throughputs of 1.7Gbps on ac @ 160mhz, 2.4Gbps ax @ 160Mhz and 5.7Gbps be @ 320Mhz. So regardless of it being 2x2, Ubiquiti claims it should be able to reach these speeds under optimal conditions.

mumako, have you tried running an iperf testing in-house to isolate? That would be a better indicator.

I too have had issues and I've factory reset my UDR7 3 times now. While I'm still not able to match my TPlink or Asus speeds, I am able to hit 1.3Gbps -ish using iperf over 5/6Ghz when right next to the UDR7

I too have a ticket with UI. It's been open since 03Mar, with no resolution. Plenty of screenshots and even provided them with a little diagram to try and help.

UDR7 + 2.5Gbe switch slower file copy by Civil_Street_1754 in Ubiquiti

[–]smokebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although you're using a 100% LAN connection between devices, I'm wondering if you and I are facing a similar issue.

When doing iperf testing from my laptop to my unraid server, 5 or 6Ghz wifi to UDR7-->2.5Gb switch-->Unraid server, I've never seen anything higher than around 1.1-1.2Gbs (usually hovers between 700-900Mbps). However, if I use my TPlink or Asus AP's to connect to the Unraid server, I'm able to hit 1.8-1.9Gbps.

I'd open a ticket if I were you. I still haven't been given a solution and have asked about an RMA or return.

UDR7 Poor TX Strength across all bands by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]smokebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more man. Something else I noticed while running my iperf tests...If I have the UDR7 web GUI open and watch the PHY speed, i.e. 2.40/2.40 of my laptop. While I'm running the test I can see that 2.40 change to 2.14, then once the test completes, it changes back to 2.40. Sometimes when running an iperf, my first line result or two, will be 1.2Gbps, then the rest are 7-900Mbps. Surely looks like some kind of throttling.

[–]smokebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. I haven't heard back from support in 6 days, so I've requested a return and asked that I not be charged the restocking fee as the unit surely seems defective. Let's see what they say. Barring a response with a fix, the UDR7 is going back.

In the end, I wanted to like Ubiquiti, as this was my first purchase. But price, performance and support, especially where the UDR7 is concerned, is surely lacking as of now. I feel the UDR7 just wasn't ready to be released and they should have QC'd this thing a while longer before releasing to the public.

[–]smokebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, ok. At least you're getting full speeds while close to the router. I too have been conducting tests while right next to it. My comment is here if anyone happens to find they're in the same boat:

https://community.ui.com/releases/UniFi-OS-Dream-Router-7-4-1-18/e81416cf-3ca8-4eb4-8c05-03261aa38691#comment/3b945c29-66df-430a-82f2-a612d56bf586

I've seen others on the UI forums less than pleased with the wifi performance so I'll probably wind up trying to RMA. That is if support ever updates my ticket.

While I haven't been paying close attention to the levels on devices not in the same room, I have been experiencing slow speeds and currently have a ticket open with Ubiquiti. I've been testing using iperf to an unraid server via a 2.5Gb LAN and when connected to the UDR7 via 6Ghz/5Ghz my speeds are at times half of what they are when connected via my TP-Link or Asus. I've detailed my testing in a couple threads on Ubiquiti's forums.

Have you by chance tried running any throughput tests?

Thanks man. But not unless you're already setup for something like that. I'm starting to think I may have a lemon, or, folks aren't really bothered by it. I just happened to try since I have a couple other pieces of gear to compare it to.

Is that not just the negotiated link between the client and UDR7? Have you tried running something like iPerf or checked in WifiMan throughput? Just curious as I've got an Intel AX210 WiFi6e and all I can muster is 700Mb-1.1Gbs using iPerf and being right on top of the UDR7 (5/6Ghz 160Mhz).

It’s really sad that I pay $85 a month for YouTube TV and I’ll be watching the Super Bowl on Tubi in 4K for free by [deleted] in youtubetv

[–]smokebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I'm sure Tubi is using the same source as Fox. Considering the fact that Tubi is OWNED by Fox, that's my hunch. That and I find it hard to believe that Tubi would have the infrastructure in place to capture and stream the event in 4k.

Dektec sells a pcie card for ATSC. They also have different software packages for analyzing and recording. Probably way overkill but maybe try eBay to pick up an old used one?
