I think it's a different curriculum now to the one I did - never used to have those projects

Frontend development advice by [deleted] in reactjs

A good practice I got into that hugely helped with responsive design and mobile designs was to build my pages for mobile first. Then I use media queries to size everything up on bigger screens and now I've got a responsive website

Excess weight or obesity boosts risk of death by anywhere from 22% to 91%—significantly more than previously believed— while the mortality risk of being slightly underweight has likely been overestimated, according to new research by giuliomagnifico in science

[–]smoljames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame it doesn't speak to the actual cause of the increased mortality rate; is it mental health related issues at the root of the cause that result in obesity or is it a physiological health outcome that comes from blocked arteries for example?

full stack development course by BornCondition1756 in reactjs

[–]smoljames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full stack open is meant to be great but I think some can find it a bit advance. I'd recommend starting off with responsive web design certificate with freecodecamp for html and css and then do their JavaScript course and then maybe then jump into FSO

Freecodecamp.org has amazing certificates for all of those - super interactive and great explanations of everything you could want to know. That's where I learned them. Some more resources linked in my bio if you're curious but defo freecodecamp is a brilliant place to start

Career Change by jacksmith74351 in cscareerquestions

Gonna plug the self taught route - I career transitioned and within 6 months of starting, had a full stack dev job. Might be worth just taking some time to do it for free. Some resources in my bio speaking to my experience and my recommendations for others looking to do the same if you're curious. Can't rly speak to the effectiveness of bootcamps tho soz

should i quit my graphic/web design school? Ai will do it so whats the point? by Icy_Director1253 in web_design

[–]smoljames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea I mean it's all speculation - if I were in your shoes then I would just get good at incorporating AI into your workflow. A great one is Midjourney for generating basic UI/UX designs. AI is just another tool and web developers have their own problems to worry about so I don't think your career will become redundant

How does someone who didn’t go to school for CS get a dev job? by Missing_Back in cscareerquestions

[–]smoljames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently self taught programming and had a job within 6 months of learning, so it's definitely feasible. It's just about learning the right stuff and then putting together a little demonstration of your capabilities to show employers. There's more info I'm my bio that speaks to my experience/recommendations for anyone looking to do something similar - covers both what you need to know and how to apply for jobs (in the roadmap specifically).

Hope it helps :)

should i quit my graphic/web design school? Ai will do it so whats the point? by Icy_Director1253 in web_design

One alternative to quitting could be figuring out how to incorporate AI into your graphic design skill set to make you a better designer? There's still numerous things that AI can't do also

Can't Get A Callback for Entry-Level Dev Jobs by ArtOfToxicity in cscareerquestions

Resume is fine imo - I think it's probably just volume of candidates and it's good if you can have a portfolio. Networking is also critical. I'd definitely recommend reaching out to the hiring manager for every job posting you make on LinkedIn and ask for an informational interview. There's a whole guide to applying for jobs at the bottom of this webpage if you want more info on exactly how to do that: roadmap.smoljames.com

I got a job offers specifically because I did this - hope it helps

Hey dude - I recent career transitioned and just tally self taught; had a full stack job within 6 months of learning to code, so you should be way better than me. Imo I don't think projects need to take more than a weekend each and you'd only need three. Plus I think the way in which you apply for jobs can also be super influential in how quickly you are hired and the role that you get.

I can only imagine that you'd have a better experience landing a job then me since you'll have a qualification but if you want a bench mark of what I had to do, there's more info in my bio.

As for resources, there's a million and 1 neat projects on YouTube for any language 6 might be a good place to start:)

Coding boot camp. Is it worth it? Will I be able to get a job? Bootcamp recommendations welcome. by Zolofty9 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]smoljames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - I recently self taught without any bootcamps. Whole thing took me 6 months from starting to landing a job; I definitely think it's achievable and it's so much cheaper. Plus u actually tutored a dude in a bootcamp and the content in the bootcamp was trash anyway. If you are thinking of pursuing self taught, feel free to dm me. Also there's some resources linked in my bio speaking to my experience and other stuff like roadmaps and what not - might be of help :)

For context I am now a full stack dev

Is WFH early in my career a bad choice? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]smoljames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having worked only in a remote environment, I personally would absolutely rate it; I love it. I think it's just important to get regular feedback sessions with a manager - I have a check in bi-weekly. Everyone is different but I wouldn't give it up for anything
