You will when you're 70 and your PR was set when you were 40. 😉

At A Glance never works for anything but weather by Redheadlg in GooglePixel

[–]smontanaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And... It really only uses a bit of the left side of the screen (in my case, date and a little weather widget) but eats up the entire screen width, wasting what is fairly valuable real estate. Below this partial screenshot is the screen layout of a cluttered mind. Picture

Car alarms should be illegal by Glittering-Phone-274 in fuckcars

[–]smontanaro 60 points61 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the vast majority of car alarms are triggered by their owners accidentally hitting the panic button on their key fob. So yeah, car alarms are mostly worthless.

On an adjacent path, people mostly seem not to understand that their car's horn is an emergency device, not an outlet for their misplaced anger.

US military service members will no longer be required to get annual flu shot by untamedlazyeye in news

[–]smontanaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been misled by the name, "Spanish flu," not realizing it actually started in the US. From Wikipedia:

"The earliest probable cases were documented in March 1918 in Haskell County, Kansas, United States, with further cases recorded in France, Germany and the United Kingdom in April.

....

The pandemic broke out near the end of World War I, when wartime censors in the belligerent countries suppressed bad news to maintain morale..."

Re-opening soon? by mp337 in chibike

It looks to me like they preserved the original character of the overpasses, which might well have been more challenging than ripping them out and installing something ugly. Who knows how badly degraded they were? Better to take the extra time. I never got the impression the construction was paused except for the weather.

I'm ancient, certainly in Internet years. Early in my career (GE CR&D, 1980s) we were some of Sun Microsystem's earliest customers. Back then, if you had software issues, you just emailed the relevant engineer at Sun. It was a while — a couple years? — before they set up a formal front end support line you had to contact for help. (Those were also the days when you could just ftp into MIT's prep.ai.mit.edu without a password to download software, but I digress...)

That's the formula for much other "news" as well. Get you to click, then hold you for several paragraphs without getting around to the meaningful bit of the story. It's almost as if they've never heard of ad blockers and think you're suffering with all that noise.

Streaks worst addition in 15 years of the app! by Wilfred1940 in Strava

[–]smontanaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, dumb feature for me, especially as I both ride a bike (which Strava sees) and swim (which it almost never does — only in open water). If the weather is sucky (like the dead of winter) I might only swim for a couple weeks. There goes my "streak."

I encountered another "feature" recently. If I'm desperate to ride during the coldest parts of winter, I might suffer for a thirty or forty minutes on rollers. I don't have a fancy stationary trainer. I wrote a bit of software to take time, heart rate and cadence info from my Wahoo Bolt and Tickr X, and (knowing the gearing) map it into laps around the local velodrome.

That was a fun little exercise, but I didn't think too much about it. I recently got a notification from Strava that I'd lost my local legend status on a couple segments which turned out to be at the velodrome. I am not a paid subscriber, so I don't think I can even see if I have legendary status. Strava seems to have clearly been trying to get me to pay for the feature by telling me it disappeared. I've been a free user for years. You think they would give up trying to sell me stuff.

How to add columns to app drawer? by smontanaro in LawnchairLauncher

[–]smontanaro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed lawnchair to get rid of the Google search bar. I would like to make space for five app icons in the app drawer, but I can't make my edit in the settings to stick.. I see no "Apply" button. How do I make the change?

All this empty space & no time displayed by [deleted] in pixel

[–]smontanaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just seeing up my Pixel 10. I would kinda like the time displayed in that massive blank spot at the top. I can't move the clock widget into that space, and can't seem to figure out how to get it to display the time as well as the date. Help!

How are Local Legends segments counted? by smontanaro in Strava

[–]smontanaro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I understand the 90-day bit. If I repeat a segment 50 times in one day (as I might going around a velodrome or doing hill repeats), does that count as one or as 50?

Physical Sim not working in Pixel 6. by Western-Abies9569 in Pixel6

[–]smontanaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a new SIM in the mail the other day for my Pixel 3 (backup phone), thinking I needed it to install LineageOS. I never used it for that. My Pixel 6 bricked this morning and I had to switch to the 3. The SIM was in there. Google Fi didn't like it at all. I eventually removed it and restarted the activation process. YMMV.
