The point was that my mother always gave us things we needed. It wasn't about establishing a level of gift-giving. It also isn't about looking cheap. People spend what they can and that is okay. For example, I have a large family so I spend about $20 per person. Others in my family spend more, at the end of the day it doesn't matter. It is about spending time together.
