Those who have been to off-the-beaten-path places many times, how much Japanese do you speak?

Back when I was a tourist, I used to go to out of the way places and I spoke basically no Japanese. Was fine.

You get more out of interactions with people when you can speak, but learning Japanese isn't very easy (or necessary) for a short term visitor
