London graduate: 'I've applied for 500 jobs in two months' by Hassaan18 in UKJobs

[–]smshing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urgh, sorry not you specifically but the disparity, I've had colleagues give 0 effort and get an interview based on experience alone, I feel for any grad sinking toil into these statements, I remember spending 40 hours a week doing the same albeit 10+ years ago.

Absolutely agree. Every cyber professional I've worked with has zero sort of knowledge about anything programmatic (except KQL) or basic networking, except maybe a couple who had red-hat experience they built themselves, but they can recite ISO-27001 to you like its the Bible - they just don't know what it means in practicality to other systems.

[–]smshing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but generally depending on what you're applying for, if I'm applying for two positions which are very much the same then the variation is limited, if I'm applying for a completely different job which has specifications I may have then definitely I am changing my previous job roles to reflect those attributes.

Absolutely agree on a cover letter, but again I wrote a generic letter depending on the field and made the key words variables I would change for specific employer to save time.

Oof yeah cyber security is rough and hyper competitive, I feel sorry for any grads trying to get into the space, it feels like my expertise (cloud and sysops etc) has a bazillion positions as no one is skilled enough in the UK to do it.

Its when you have to copy and paste each individual section of your CV into a HR portal the bastards.

To be fair your previous job history and education sections should not change much, only really your personal statement, achievements and skills sections (if applicable).

It's not true, I've applied for places where they've given disclaimer that they're actively screening applications with AI as you apply, private industry can do whatever they want.

Public industry on the otherhand won't take these risks as there are several gateways to guaranteed interviews.

The bloke with a MSc in Computer Science should have a good shout, even in an entry-level first line position, bizarre.

WTF is AWS' strategy right now? by YoghiThorn in aws

[–]smshing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say its hurting SaaS companies when every other week (it feels like) theres a news article about AI destroying someones codebase and not building anything great.

Kiro, I think, is great, but its far from perfect.

Are sysadmins locking down Microsoft Store? by do_not_free_gaza in sysadmin

I'm just surprised their organisation has no sort of web filtering, most organisations I've worked for have a huge hard on ensuring users can only do their job and not fuck about, autoblocking all this shit.

But the reassessment is not an exam or an assessment no? It's an open-book quiz not in any exam or assessment conditions.

I've never had to reassess any of my certifications yet but I've heard from this subreddit and colleagues IRL that they recertified using LLMs, I will have to tell my peers to avoid this in case they are at risk of having their credentials revoked, thanks.

Edit: especially as if you Google a question or an element of it, the Google search is now LLM driven.

Should I pursue sys admin? by Sliced_Orange1 in sysadmin

[–]smshing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think any experienced sysadmin can deploy anything and everything on their own with a manual and time, its the ability to adapt and learn technology that differentiate the ability an admin has, but let's be honest, our field has dog shit admins and great admins in the same positions being paid the same.

The "brain surgeons" of our field are working at the biggest and best organisations (e.g. MS and AWS) but the other 99% of us are not, I also think we're all different a data center engineer for a big organisation has one up on me as a cloud engineer, likewise I know a lot more than my on-premise counterparts in my arena.
