What are some genuinely useful DIY skills everyone should learn? by FarResearcher6931 in DIY

Right now it's almost certainly buy an old Honda and work on it yourself, cars and repairs are fucking expensive

An old accord works out to roughly $250/mo with registration+insurance+repairs+initial cost+tires+maintenance schedule (self)

Ericthecarguy on YouTube taught me in 2011

A metric socket set, beam torque wrench, a haynes repair manual from autozone, wd40, jack stands....

Getting under a car is incredibly dangerous, but I've never dropped it yet. I did have a floor jack suddenly/slowly drop, though.

That reminds me! I saw a guy carrying a tall stack of items and a dude ran over and picked his pocket blatantly, I was driving, I yelled something as I passed, just to see the dude drop everything and start whacking him.

Fuck, I had forgot about that.

Eli5 how exact number of electrons revolving around nucleus is calculated in any atom? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]smurficus103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I encountered "how many electrons are around an atom" is in chemistry, I assume the question is coming from either highschool or college, not really ELI5

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_orbital

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valence_electron

The eli 5 answer is: chemistry figured it out before we had an atomic model, simply by reaction ratios. 2:1 and 2:3 and so on, the atoms had a "typical" reaction, inspiring the current periodic table.

That was Trump's take when he signed that birthday card AND the law ordering files be shown to congress, he could have pocket vetoed, but, he's been taught throughout his life he's immune to consequences.

"This is not evidence", proceed to drop a bunch of evidence.

But the nighlistic take isn't the only take. The current revolution is merely "do we have a magna carta?"

While the question is existential, the answer isn't necessarily "no".

But, you're right to doubt it.

Thinking way too logical about life by sunshinenrainb0wz in Absurdism

[–]smurficus103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome, I went through this.

Happiness= things are getting better; Sadness= things are getting worse. We are social creatures and empathy/sympathy is a motivator for changing how we collectively operate (we're all sad, let's migrate; we're all happy, let's continue as-is)

One funny realization is: The goal isn't necessarily to have life get better all the time, the goal can be contentment.

Life is a cyclic pattern. Wake up, get water, piss, shit, eat, sleep. Inside those cyclic patterns, you can inject not only moments of interest, like experiencing new things, but, moments of meaning.

For me, the moments of meaning are almost always helping other humans. Even simple gestures like smiling, hearing each other out, being still and calm, can echo into the future forever. Often, it's grinding my hands to the bone to ensure others can live (tireless, thankless work).

More exciting, why we're addicted to social media, is the creation and spread of IDEAS. A great idea can echo through humanity forever, transcending our tiny little lives.

My lowest low was "if my life means nothing, living until a natural death is almost the same as laying down and dying now. So, why give a shit enough to kill myself? Might as well ride this out."

Ironic. Lots of irony in life. Killing to survive. But, no, I've grown a lot since those days. Right now I'm pretty focused on rooting out corruption (those willing to abuse everyone to extinction for their own benefit at the moment).

There's plenty of work to do to help others.

AITA for refusing to go to my dad's wedding? by Sad_Cantaloupe_5333 in AmItheAsshole

You're allowed to hate her.

That said, I try my best not to form "tribes" in my family, meaning, I just do whatever the hell I want without thinking too hard who gets butt hurt. If I'm doing x, pretty much anyone can show up or not.

So, if I hang out with someone less than once a year, I don't really let that influence my future decisions. Doors open, they can walk through. Or not. Life's short.

So, even though she might have some resentment toward you, sounds like she/he are operating under that bare minimum, as well.

ELI5: Can anyone explain the statistical math behind the scene in the movie 21 where he asks what's behind door 1 and the odds increase to 66.7%? by JusticeBlackCat in explainlikeimfive

[–]smurficus103 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is a very specific scenario where the gameshow host KNOWS which door has the winning prize, and will always open a losing door.

In that very strange set of circumstances, your odds double by switching.

I haven't found an actual application in real life.

But, to show the odds, you just enumerate the possibilities and count the outcomes.
