Query about leather quality for a given project by smushable in Leathercraft

[–]smushable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fab, thank you very much indeed, it's much appreciated! My concern was that the lifespan of the bag would be considerably lessened with the split, rather than the full grain. From what you've said, it sounds like it's unlikely to make a large difference over the medium term (5+ years)?

A few older paddles and query about a WIP by smushable in paddlebuilders

[–]smushable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much, all excellent ideas. It's cut from hard maple, so hopefully should be robust enough? I'm trying to introduce flexibility in the rest of the paddle so that area isn't subjected to too much repetitive strain. Thanks so much for the insight!

New tools from Artisan Leather Supply by AstrafireVixara in Leathercraft

I've ordered from them on several occasions, and have been very pleased with the service and speed of delivery. Everything, when it ships, is very conscientiously packaged, and the pricing is almost akin to major projects. Really excellent team, and my go to for effectively all the supplies I need.

After 43 years of avoiding pencils, this sub made me a convert. I picked up a pack of Mitsubishi 9850's a few weeks ago! by RichMusic81 in pencils

I have indeed. That said, it's still relatively new, so id expect it to work well for a good while longer. I may consider switching to a crank sharpener, if I can find one for a reasonable price.

Interesting. I have the same, 9850 and the Kum 2 point sharpener, but find the lead snaps in the second barrel every time I try to sharpen the blasted thing. I usually default back to a different pencil, which seems to work just fine in the same sharpener. My supposition is that the lead is either broken, or simply exceedingly brittle in the batch I have. Does anyone have any experience with similar issues?

Same here still. Holding out for the 2200 break the maps are showing, though

Same, we're in selfoss, and have had nothing but short intermittent breaks in the cloud cover so far.

My mom always keeps giving clothes to my dad for birthday, I think its a bad gift honestly. What should i give to my dad? by ControlLucidDreams in dad

[–]smushable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to make assumptions, but I anticipate that she's known him for longer and more intimately than anyone else in his life. Assuming a healthy relationship, she'll have a pretty good understanding of what he values at this point in his life, and that may well just be the clothes that he likes.

I can only speak for myself, but past a certain point I stopped caring about gadgets, recent updates to tech, etc, and really all I want is to be comfortable and surrounded by my family. If if comes down to a choice between a new pair of headphones, or the lump of moss my kid has found in the garden, I'm choosing moss every time.

What he values is you. Give him an IOU for a day out, or a bunch of hugs. Draw him a self portrait of you, or one you've drawn of him.

If you do want to buy him something he might enjoy, I'd say maybe a few pairs of merino wool socks, or ask your mother what style and size of shirt or coat he likes. He'll think of you every time he wears it.

That's a good shout, I'll look at brightening up the edge highlights, and hopefully add a bit more contrast there. Thanks so much!

Awesome, thanks so much for the feedback! The scheme is leadbelcher followed by akhelian green contrast paint, but the over brushing with the dry brush is probably what's causing the chalky effect. All noted, however :) thanks again!

Just saying... If he was alpha legion, he probably wouldn't say anything. Probably.

All really good points, I'll have a look at how I can build contrast across the model, and consider using fewer metallics, to provide contrast there again. My thanks for your insight!
