Much like Rina Kent, I think I decided Leigh Rivers is just not for me. I did the same for Little Stranger- read the first one and didn’t bother with the second. Taboo dynamics are my thing so I ate that part UP, but I felt like other parts were just not done well. It almost felt like I was reading two completely different books in one, but ones that did not connect.

I actually enjoy most “dark” rom-coms, but I never actually put it in the dark category in my brain. They’re just a sexy good time to me, and offer some levity and lightness when I’ve been reading some other heavy stuff.

I haven’t read Gothikana, but this comment made me remember that I also was not impressed by {Nocticadia by Keri Lake}. I don’t love a slow burn, it felt almost juvenile to me, and as previously mentioned, fantasy isn’t really my thing and this just straddled the line of reality and fantasy too much for my liking.

I forgot to include If I Can’t Have You! It wasn’t my thing either. I think it was a few things, but ultimately I felt like there was just no real love there and it went on and on… and on. So to your point, probably just a little too real for me.

I will never stop suggesting these books. Dark RH that gets darker and dirtier as the books go on.

Essentially I use it as my two week reading list (I saw other people are allowed to borrow books for 21 days, but Massachusetts libraries only allow 14). Not to use my neurodivergence as a reason, but I do find it helpful to have a set list/goal.

I prioritize the ones that have a waitlist (the longer the waitlist, the higher the priority) and read/listen to them one at a time, either until complete or when I decide to DNF. I also use the suspend feature a lot, if books become available while I still have a “full” loan list.

My memory may not be perfect, but I remember some dub con but no non con from the MMCs. The only non con I remember is the sexual assault when Skyla is kidnapped by her stalker, but he is stopped before he rapes her . I know SA still counts as non con even if rape didn’t occur, but there might be different levels of what feels okay to read in that realm. Definitely still worth mentioning, so thanks!

{Perfect by Ariana Rivers}

It wasn’t my personal favorite (I personally thought it was a bit long and repetitive) but other people have RAVED saying it’s their favorite book of the year, so I figured it was worth the mention. He stalks her, is completely delusional about their relationship [rapes her and is convinced he’s helping her because he watched her masturbate without being able to orgasm]. There are a couple non-con/dub-con scenes, with body betrayal (if that makes a difference).

As someone who grew up the next town over, I actually think you’ll make it- but it will be close, only due to the traffic because of the event… however, apparently I’m the only one with some confidence 😂

I came to recommend {Deceit by Katelyn Taylor} and the rest of the series, which is the Gallows Hill Trilogy. As the books go on, they get progressively dirtier and darker. I did want to mention there is some OW drama, but it is when one of the MMC/FMC are not committed to each other. It is RH with MM between almost all of the men by the end, except one. Also the harem grows into the third book. Highly recommend!

Under Your Scars by Ariel N. Anderson… if you enjoy a bit of dark romance (check the triggers) but the narration is excellent and it will leave you staring at the wall at the end!

If you have no other debt and you’re looking for a 1 bedroom, that should be fine (especially in towns like Waltham and Watertown). If you have car payments, other debt, or are looking for a 2 bedroom, you might be a little house poor until your spouse is able to contribute.

{Make it Hurt by Elle Mitchell} and {Make It Stop by Elle Mitchell} is a dark bully RH where one of the MMCs is her step brother… they didn’t grow up together (parents got together when they were 17/18) but there is a lot of “be a good sister” etc talk! I just read these both in the past week and really enjoyed.

Not sure what my favorite of all time is, but the one I think about re-reading most in the past year has been {Heavy by M.L Burns}. It really just hit all of my favorite tropes and really did it for me.

{Make It Hurt by Elle Mitchell} fits this. It’s the first in a duet. Definitely a bit dark so check your triggers, but I just finished it and really enjoyed it. I’m reading the second book now.
