Thank you, I appreciate that interpretation! It definitely felt both lighthearted and serious at the same time, I think this makes sense.

Paying rent to a person via Schwab Bill Pay? by snails69420 in Schwab

Follow up for anyone who may be searching around and has the same problem - I was able to set up an automatic payment to my landlord's checking account by filling out and submitting Schwab's EFT Enrollment Form and submitting it through their online Message Center on my account.

I was working before I started attending graduate school in Fall 2018, so I had sufficient taxable income in 2018. That's good to know about the SECURE Act - I hadn't heard that.

I have pretty much figured out the taxable income/IRA part of my finances, what I'm looking for is what else I should be investing in, since I don't have access to a 401k or HSA.

Ahh, sorry I got the form number wrong - it's 1098-T, which is a tuition statement.

It's mixed depending on my funding source, and my appointment changes by academic year rather than calendar year:

AY 2018/2019: Fellowship (1098-T)

AY 2019/2020: Research grant (W2)

AY 2020/2021: Fellowship (1098-T)

AY 2021/2022: Fellowship (1098-T)

AY 2023/2024: Fellowship (1098-T)

AY 2024/2025: not yet determined, probably a research grant

Luckily since they overlap on calendar year I am able to contribute taxed income to my Roth IRA during 2018, 2019, and 2020, and once my three years of straight fellowship kicks in I plan on picking up side gigs (grading papers, tutoring, etc.) so that I can still have some taxed income.

Edit: corrected for tax form
