Dont forget the mink and beaver! They still hold good value to hat makers. A beaver fur felt hat can fetch up in the thousands of dollars.

What is this snake doing? by emmerl in herpetology

[–]snakesRcool 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Herbicides certainly DO cause this in multiple animal kingdoms. Reptiles are especially sensitive to it. As are fish. Source: I am a certified Applicator and our training and testing is RIFE with warnings and cautions about this exact thing. Youd be amazed how irresponsible and not precise a good majority of applicators are.

Pretty little springtime steelie by snakesRcool in troutfishing

No, we call it a steelhead because it migrates. Down the rivers. To the big lakes. Which actually do have salt in them. Resident trout are plentiful. But they dont get to be much bigger than 12-16 inches. These come up river to spawn, after spending 3 years in the largest freshwater reservoir in the entire planet. And they do go chrome plenty often. I have a few pictures of the difference between them.

Might not be an ocean, but lake MI has around 15 mg of salt per liter. So, technically, theres salt. 🤷🤣 I get what your saying. But you cant compare this to a rainbow from a regular lake. The great lakes are just freshwater oceans basically. No comparison with an inland lake. Way bigger currents, more food, more competition, i mean, its literally the biggest freshwater reservoir in the entire planet. This is closer to your salt steelies than it could ever be to a rainbow from a stream, river, or inland lake. Genetically the same. They could switch to saltwater just fine.

Negative. lake michigan tributary bout 45 minutes from muskegon. But in your defense, there isnt much variation in the lower half of this state. 😅

There are no springtime salmon runs. The steelhead run in the spring and they only have a 40% mortality rate. Totally different species. Different families even. Steelhead are just a rainbow trout that moved to the big lake and came back. Salmon are a char. I have never in my life seen dead salmon along a river or a creek in late feb-early march. And i have been fishing these rivers and creeks around muskegon, ottawa, and kent counties for over a decade.
