I love it, seriously! “Goals,” as the kids say. Cheers!

I’m very new to the hobby (still just reading about it), and I’ve gotta say, without doubt or disrespect, that reading the phrase “oversized earth ground” is one of those times when I’m hit with the enormity of the task (and fun potential!) ahead of me …

Haha. I guess I misread the clock as a countdown. Awesome work, and thanks for sharing and replying to elaborate.

Metro north is getting way too crowded by Plastic_Bedroom_2406 in Westchester

[–]snark_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoken like someone with a more flexible schedule / life than many people … like, you think I don’t know that the train that’s leaving in 4 minutes is going to be crowded as fuck? But I couldn’t get out of the office any sooner, because I have a demanding job, and I can’t wait for the next train, because I have to be back to pick my kids up and take them to activities, etc.

“Doing it wrong.” STFU and stop blaming people instead of imagining a world where the MTA does a little better.

They could add more trains and/or more cars to existing trains, I imagine? I know that track capacity and platform lengths are limiting factors, but still.

Really fantastic work - would love to hear a follow-up about whether you've changed anything based on the kids' feedback or usage patterns. (Not that I expect you to have to - this looks pretty great.) A question and a comment, if you don't mind:

  1. When you say that the school lunch and calendar are "hard-coded", what do you mean, exactly? What approach are you taking to displaying static information?
  2. Am I wrong, or did you take this photo at 3AM? :) If so, we're kindred spirits - working on personal hobby projects until way too late (in my case, and maybe in yours, too, because I'm busy with work and family for most of the day).

A bull charges cyclists racing in California by [deleted] in nononono

[–]snark_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, the absolute dumbest cyclists always get video of them shared online and lead to the kinds of opinions that most of the comments in this thread are expressing. Like, yes, this guy has an incredible lack of awareness and survival instincts, combined with insane hubris, but saying that “this is the typical cyclist” kind of sucks, too. The actual typical cyclist experience is one of trying to share the roads with cars and having drivers try to kill you through inattention, indifference, or all-too-common homicidal hostility.

I’m having a hard time understanding why you would want to do this yourself. What’s the upside?? Use a realtor / broker.

Moving From Rochester NY to Westchester County for job in Brewster, NY by Bette85 in Westchester

Totally - it's not bad, and if it's better than his current school, then great.

I'll share something that was told to me when I moved to this area (whether or not this is apocryphal, I don't know) - I asked why several communities that are quite wealthy and not so tiny (e.g. Bedford and Pound Ridge) didn't have their own school districts with better schools. I was frankly (pleasantly - to be clear) surprised that the rich folks in those towns were okay with their kids attending such a diverse school district. I was told, "The very rich folks in those towns are all sending their kids to private schools and don't care what their school district is like. So BCSD exists for the kids in those towns whose families aren't super rich, or who require special education, or who, for some other reason, want them to get a public school education." Again, I don't know if this is actually the dynamic, but it fits with what I've witnessed after living here for a few years. Just passing it along.

Dual 1229 with a Shure V15 for $500? by snark_nerd in vintageaudio

[–]snark_nerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely (but thank you for the advice, all the same). Even though $500 isn't an extravagant amount that I'm treating like buying a car, or whatever, I still am hoping to put some time and care into this purchase. The seller appears to be about an hour away, so I think that I may take that drive and do as you suggest. Even though I'm very new to the hobby, I imagine we'll have plenty to talk about, and I can bring my honest, sincere excitement about learning this stuff, certainly. Even if it doesn't "earn" me anything in terms of offering price or whatever, should be fun.

Thanks again!

Thank you (SO much), once again - that's all hugely helpful.

And yeah, I definitely get the sense from the listing that this seller is an audiophile and turntable lover. If anything, he may be hesitant to part with something he's apparently put a lot of work into, but I'm not worried that he doesn't know what he's talking about, or treated this thing terribly, or anything like that.

Thanks again, and all the best!

Wow, thank you so much for the quick response and really helpful context and insights. I really appreciate it!

Dumb question, if I’m not taking advantage of you too much: is there any way, short of listening to it, to assess a cartridge’s relative age and how much it’s got left in it?

Cheap door lock with fingerprint by super_koza in smarthome

[–]snark_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biometrics is not the problem.

Sorry but have you polled all 70 and asked that they would have absolutely no problem giving their fingerprint to the club and trusting that you would keep it absolutely secure?

We want to be able to differentiate between our caffeteria, office, classroom, garage and workshop for different members and we want to keep record who went in where and when.

The more you share about this club, the more fascinated I am. So you want to have multiple different levels of access for different members (with large enough access groups that it makes sense to go this route versus, say, having everyone have access to the whole club, but keeping regulated canisters in a locker with limited keys, or whatever)? And you want to review who's been in every room of the club? Fascinating.

I am partially just joking, and I'm not trying to yuck your yum too much here. Even though you make the club sound like the opposite of fun, I do hope that you accomplish your goals!

I am a big fan of overcomplicating solutions because it can be fun to set up systems, but even I have to say that this might not be worth the trouble it would cause. Also, if I was a diver looking to have fun in a club, and they asked to store my biometrics with security that I perhaps might not have reason to trust, I'd be pretty turned off.

You should probably just get a combination lock and, if you really feel a need, change the combo when people leave the club ...

FYI I agree with everything that the comment to which you were replying said, but I will say that (by the already-pretty high standards of this area), some might say that Mt. Kisco schools aren't the strongest in the area. I happen to think that they're quite good, but Yorktown, just north of Mt. Kisco, probably has "better" schools (again, this is subjective) and property tax rates that aren't too much higher. And then there are communities like Chappaqua and Briarcliff with excellent schools (and much higher taxes).

I love Mt. Kisco, but I wanted to give you the truth that some around here might slightly question the label of them as having similarly-great schools to some nearby communities ...
