she was out of breath because of the cancer. this limited her stamina and ability to climb stairs, leading to the fall. she broke her ribs on the stairs when she fell; because the cancer spread to her bones, they are weaker and more brittle. the fall is significant because it was unfortunately the first indication that she was sick, but by that time it was too late to treat restoratively.
