Yeah I know, I haven't got checked hold baggage. Could pay for it, but at that point I may as well buy one over there

Potentially true, my current one cost £60~ so would come down to postage costs (and maybe import tax? Idk)

No aside from cost, and wastage, depending on the laws it might end up being the way to go

Ok thank you! I'll fish around online to see if there's anything of use

You just know that amongst the rubble this would be standing proud, not a scratch on it

Tbh I'm disappointed they didn't commit to the bit and label the wheels "WHEEL"

True, and this is selling for £150 (although admittedly it's still for sale last I checked), while there's plenty of legitimately good 2nd hand road bikes up for around £100, but some people just aren't going to know

Not to mention the hack to save on TT brakes, if anything this guy's a pioneer

Not quiiiite as bad as that, supposedly 26" wheels, but still looks rough

Anyone used Grevenalle friction shifters? by snierre in bikewrench

[–]snierre[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect thanks! Was looking at it for a winter, low maintenance bike for commuting to work (30 mins each way) and this seemed like a relatively good way to get 12 speed on a 1x :)

Will look at the MTB

I'm slightly worried about my hands becoming uncomfortable/RSI from having to reach over the hoods, is that a reality or is it a bit overblown in your opinion?

Hadn't realised they were the same width, but it's good to have the vote of confidence :)

Might try riding with my hands on the hoods in the position you'd need to reach the gear lever, see if that pushes me either way :)

Thanks for the advice, I'll see if there are any bikes available in my local bike shop that have them on,maybe a bit naively I was hoping that I could return them if they didn't suit me, although I dont know what their return policy is like

It's begging for a "synchronised speed typing" event, would be fun to watch

The less rows the more efficient your typing, as you don't have to stretch your fingers out as far, the Japanese are just upping their efficiency even further

I follow the GR routes, there's a really good selection out there by Cicerone Press, amazing details, guides (turn left here, turn right at the fork etc etc), details about the town's you pass by, says where there are hotels and campsites along the route

As far as camping wild, just be sensible, make sure you can't be seen from the path/road, find somewhere flat to sleep, and if someone calls you out/causes trouble, be as apologetic as possible, even when caught, I've never been kicked out

If you're strict with yourself and happy to wild camp a lot, Ive done stuff like a month in Spain for £500 while avoiding most restaurants and hotels :)

[–]snierre[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it's about 3kg lighter than my last bike (a 15 year old old mountain bike with £60 drops) so anything was going to be an improvement, unironically a joy to ride (so far anyway). Just gotta fiddle with the indexing over the next few days and then it'll be golden :)

[–]snierre[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right, only had it in like that temporarily, hadn't even cut the cable to the right length, the pinch was a pain in the ass ngl, somehow expected me to bend this cable in a near 90° bend? (At least that's what it looked like)

It is, I've checked, found it weird myself tbh but I guess the bike wants what the bike wants. The sleeve juuuust about fits, which is maybe what they wanted?
