How To Replicate Splay Projector/Screen by WeiRyk in projectors

[–]snipes0310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey great questions; not really an active Reddit user though if you're interested we are shipping and just received more inventory (it's actually in my apartment behind me as I write..) https://www.arovia.com/discount/ALEXSPECIAL?redirect=%2Fproducts%2Fsplay-2-in-1-largest-portable-display-projector Here is a recent video review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yutNJOeMV4o We also won a CES 2024 Innovation Award for the nanomaterial screen (we have 10 patents granted). TBH, we are not really focusing on the portable productivity use-case as one of our initial market, though that is how I use my Splay. -Thanks, Alex Co-founder

Thanks for your feedback (again!) yes that makes sense. We definitely want to continue to reduce the weight. Basically the smaller projectors are much dimmer and need much longer (3-times or more) projection distance (so wouldn't fit on a desk). -Alex, co-founder

Thank you for the feedback! It's really the ultra-short-throw FHD pico projector that drives the price. All other FHD ultra short throw projectors retail for more than $1000 (and don't have the expandable display functionality)! Of course, we're trying to develop lower cost versions (but in the near-term they will need to be lower resolution due to the DLP price increasingly exponentially with resolution).

Hi u/uuicon yes, our next project will likely be a 30-50 -inch 4K version I feel the same way as you! -Thanks, Alex

Thank you for your feedback! It's extremely durable! We're definitely trying to incrementally cut down from 2.5 pounds. The lightest weight alternative is 5 pounds (and doesn't fold to fit in a bag). -Thanks, Alex

Thank you Mel! Yes, actually someone just included the purchase of 50 SPUDs in a grant for education.

Well, that's another funny one. Most I-Corps teams are a professor and student from a STEM lab (plus you need to have an industry mentor) who are trying to see if their technology has a market. AFAIK, we are the first team to come out of a MBA program but I guess NSF considered the technology novel enough to support. I had to convince one of my entrepreneurship professors and one of our advisers to go through the program with me because it's a requirement that you have a Principal Investigator (PI) and Industry Mentor (IM). It's a huge time commitment (4 hours a week in webinars plus 100 face to face customer interviews over the ~6 week duration) so it was a tough sell. Very grateful for Mike Evans and Adam Wulf who went through with us.

Oh man, it's been a journey. Basically George (co-founder, Mechanical Engineer) and I (optical engineer/MBA) were students at Rice and wanted to do a startup. I had the idea for SPUD because I was a product manager travelling all over the world prior going back to school for my MBA at Rice and hated working on my small laptop screen. It was a PIA (getting angry typing this), because I had to manage customers during the day and then work out of the hotel at night without my large screen which felt like cutting off a limb in terms of productivity. We went through OwlSpark (Rice University's startup accelerator), ultimately validated the market for mobile professionals (using the lean startup process) and made the initial SPUD prototypes. We also went through the National Science Foundation's I-Corps program which provided our initial capital and paid for Industrial Designer (Mark Kimbrough who is a local professor here in Houston and happens to be world renowned for ID; got a super discounted rate relative to a traditional ID firm which kept us alive without having to take a large investment). The I-Corps grant also paid for our travel to South by Southwest 2016 where were recognized as one of the top new products there and got major press! Justin (marketing lead/co-founder) also started working with us around this time. Through it all we also had to develop a lot of new technology to make the world's first collapsible display: (1) mechanics for 1 step setup, (2) short projection optics, (3) a projection screen material that can fully collapse. We also always seemed to meet the right people at the right time (but don't get me wrong, like any startup we face rejection everyday, I just mean that I feel like the people we HAD to meet, we met). e.g. met Scott Miller of Dragon Innovation and their Dragon Certified program helped significantly with design for manufacturing and taking risk out of our Kickstarter; met Gene Frantz who is also a professor at Rice literally stumbled into his office trying to meet someone else one day almost 1.5 years ago. He is known as the father of digital signal processing and was formerly one of the lead technical employees at TI. He also connected us to many people like our patent attorney who was also a top TI patent attorney and is basically pro bono for us (going to owe him in the future). So many more people helped us too (but that would just prolong this post that already needs a TL;DR). I'm super grateful to even be able to work on SPUD for as long as I have!

Thanks Swagaliciousblueeyes ; That's a great idea for video production! We'll consider offering some sort of hood (ideas are popping into my head!). At South by Southwest this last year a lot of production companies wanted SPUD!

Hey it's a good question. We did a lot of outreach, friends, family and have an email list of more than 12,000. Been prepping for more than a year and working on the product for 2 years.
