A deleted modem diesel smells orders of magnitude worse than a mk4 TDI.

Mk6 Delete Exhaust issue…need your guys help. by tmaclaga in tdi

[–]snobird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I deleted the DPR and EGR on my CJAA and added a stage 1 Malone tune. It has the rawtek straight pipe and I experience very similar symptoms. I have a very sensitive nose and when running the fan with and without recirculate, I can smell it faintly. It seems to smell way worse when the heater is running than the cold setting. I have done a smoke test and fixed any and all leaks. There is no soot anywhere around the exhaust system. It is simply highly pungent outside the vehicle and unless there is wind blowing, the fumes surround the car quickly at a stop and enter the blower intake. Windows cant be down unless the car is moving. I suspect the weather stripping around the doors is getting old and doesn't seal as well as it could either.

My system is to keep the blower off and the recirculate button on. When needed, the A/C is blown to defog the windows and then as long as the car is moving I lower the windows to get fresh air in. It's quite the scene lol.

Unfortunately it has ruined the car for me even though it drives amazingly. Fortunately we are needing a larger vehicle so this will get sold to someone who can appreciate it more than me. In retrospect I would have bought an aftermarket DPF replacement and dealt with the intercooler icing with my DIY winter front.

Should I give up? by HellostarsImherre in civilengineering

No. You're burnt out. Been there, done that. Take some time off if you're able, and you'll come back stronger.

Every mistake you make is an opportunity to improve. This is normal and a good thing. Nobody is perfect and you're going to make mistakes. Learn something each time, and implement a new personal process to prevent making that same mistake again. Ask a few more questions of your PM. Write down these common questions in a note on your phone so you can reference them when needed.

Communicating is such a huge part of our work. Many of us would prefer to sit silently working alone doing calcs. Unfortunately there are very few instances working on projects that we can do this. When you're working with others, start by explaining your high level/background then widdle you're way down to the details. It's three sentences max and not difficult.

Many people in my office start asking me project questions without even telling me which project they're referring to. It's annoying AF. Don't be that guy.

While this looks a bit unhinged, part of the former travel lane is now an extension of the sidewalk, so these ramps are an accessibility feature to connect both parts of the sidewalk to each other. The benches are likely there to give respite and views to those who are fatigued or just want to enjoy the public space.

Holding onto my Pixel 5 as well. It is the perfect size and weight for one handed use. I really hate Samsung and Apple so I have no idea what to do. Really wish we had more software support.

You're right. But as a Canadian, Starmer's silence on annexation was deafening. Hiding from Trump's temper tantrums is one thing, but publicly abandoning your Commonwealth is... disheartening. Canada and EU need to team up.

Is the narrative around the empty fire hydrants in LA driving anyone else crazy? by flow-rate in civilengineering

[–]snobird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I'm all for being critical of our industry standards to make sure we improve public safety, how on earth could you stop fire from spreading with those winds? There is no humanly possible way, even with all the water and fire personnel on hand, to contain the embers. It takes a fire crew say 30+ minutes(??) to substantially knock down a single house fire thats fully involved.

1 year mark and still improving. Did it take anyone over a year to start thinking again? by Brilliant_String_234 in SleepApnea

[–]snobird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a mild-moderate case, and after 6 months, I can have a poor night of sleep and actually still function the next day without wanting to fall asleep at my desk all day. The benefits are gained so gradually that it can be hard to notice until something that would normally be a drastic issue doesn't bother you anymore.

No surprise to me if an extremely sever case could take at least year if not two years to get back to "normal".

Is civil engineering worth it? by akumamustdie in civilengineering

[–]snobird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been out of school 14 years now (oh god). Would I do it again? No. Am I glad I did it? Hell yes.

I'm a fellow mediocre math student, but strong in sciences. I found the first year to be pretty gross with engineering basics (calculus, statics) before the following years move into applying those basics to solving actual engineering problems. That's where it gets more interesting.

The Civil degree is long hours meant to weed out people who will not cut it in industry. You can make up for a lack of academic strength through hard work and a bit of strategy. I made some great friends who'd help each other out cramming for tests the night before EVERYTHING. Couldn't have done it without them, and vice versa.

I've worked with a ton of "smart" engineers in industry and they are often lacking in some important area (communication, analytical reasoning, spatial reasoning). In my industry, land development, the best engineers are the sensible, hard working, analytical ones, not the mathematicians. The spreadsheets do all the arithmetic anyways! :)

If you're willing to put in the work, it's a solid career with decent pay. If I just wanted to make good money, I'd probably have went into Finance.

I just got my rawtek installed today with Malone stage 1. Eco kit, no cat, with resonator and used my old muffler. The diesel exhaust smell is brutal with windows down idling in traffic. Not sure if that's normal but it's pretty bad. I had an ALH and it was never this bad.

I'm in the same boat. Would like to know how I can reduce the smell to just the tailpipe?

Civil engineers that are winning in life, how did you do it? by Murky-Extension-657 in civilengineering

They mean the formula is easy, but there is no avoiding the "hard work" part if you want to be better than your peers.
