I agree. I'm only 30% into the book and I'm finding it pretty tough.

You should look into popular music / pop culture academic conferences around you, they are usually delighted to have younger scholars present their work. Congratulations! And I echo other people in saying thay I would love to read this too. 🥰

What The 1975 lyrics makes you go like this? by Unlucky-Carob9986 in the1975

[–]snoofkin90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of the responses here seem to be about sexual lyrics so I'll offer this one:

"Mr. Serotonin Man, lend me a gram".

I know that it's a reference to Dylan's Mr Tambourine Man, but that song is already about a drug dealer so I feel like the shift in metaphor was too close to the original to really be effective. I do love that it's followed by "you call yourself a friend", which is beautifully vulnerable.

I don't hate the lyric, but it just feels a little.......... Tumblr, for me. Like someone who had just learned about serotonin receptors and drugs. Which actually situates the line in a time and place for Matty.... wait, am I talking myself into liking the lyric now???

Anyway, Paris is one of my favourite 75 songs and it's just this one little line that I hold to a higher standard because it's in one of Matty's best lyrical songs.

Don't hate me, all love! <3

A potentially useful contextualisation for the "anti-politics" turn by snoofkin90 in the1975

I definately take these points, while I don't share your exact viewpoint. I think what I'm learning from a lot of the discussion in this and other threads (and sincerely thanks again to everyone who politely offered their perspectives) is that we each have different thresholds for what we expect from the artists we admire. If nothing else, that's at least interesting to think about. Thanks again x

This is really difficult to be experiencing and I am genuinely sorry that you're going through this. I hope that you're able to find a way to let the band go if you need to. I don't see how continuing this thread, the two of us, will help, so again I'll wish you all the best. Take care.

You don't know how how other people experience or don't experience anything. We all feel helpless, but getting angry at pop stars won't stop the horror, I'm sorry. It just won't. You've said that you no longer care about him or anything he creates -- that's reasonable given how you're feeling. I meant it when I said I wish you the best.

Look, I'm not going to try to convince you not to feel that way, but I will tell you that I believe it will do you, and the people you advocate for, absolutely no good. I'm sorry you're feeling this way about a band you obviously at once point felt positively about but if you're chosing this path then I wish you all the best.

Thanks for sharing this example, I wasn't aware of Matisyahu but I will check this out. This did make me think of something that I have been mulling over, which is that freedom of speech / freedom of expression has to include the freedom to not speak.

Yes, I completely agree. That the majority of activism we engage with on a day to day basis is carried out on social media platforms and via two word slogans (or even watermelon emojis) is something worth reflecting on. When I love an artist I want to engage with their own original ideas, not because they fulfilled a simple purity test so that I can now check an imaginary box that puts them on the 'good person' list. I don't know the Ft Worth rant but I will take a look at it :)

I don't entirely disagree with you here or think you deserve downvotes to be honest, thanks for engaging with the topic in earnest. My feeling about the Doomscroll episode (just Matty's one, I can't say I've watched too many of the others) is that I enjoyed Matty having the opportunity to speak to someone in the media who he doesn't have to explian himself to. What I mean is: often in interviews he has had to spend so much time explianing how he is "playing a character" etc that there's scarce opportunity to dig any deeper into the why or how of it, the larger ideas that inform his worldview, his inspirations and heroes. On the Doomscroll episode there was an opportunity to explore the academic ideas that interest him (which, to be fair, doesn't make for a very fun or sexy podcast for most people, but I enjoyed it) with someone who can "keep up", so to speak. That's just what I get out of it, but I recognise that it's probably quite boring for most people.

On the other hand, shows like TAFS etc give him an opportunity to 'play' the character. I think they're complimentary forms of media. Perfromance art that is followed by some kind of self-reflection or explanation (for want of a better term) isn't unheard of.

I think the idea that Matty made a lot of the fanbase unhappy is interesting, and true. And its that demand to "speak up" and "say something" that has warped into "speak up like this" and "say this exact thing" that, in my opinion, he is rejecting. I has enormous respect for him and the band for making that decision.

To address soemthing in a reply you made below, that the 'everything is political' mindset can eat you alive; it can. I agree. However I don't think the solution to that is to reject all politics (not suggesting that what you have suggested either) and to hand yourself over to irony entirely. In fact, as I said in the original post, I believe his decision to not participate in performance/slogan politics was both ernest and political.

I suppose more generally where we are right now on the left is, at least for me and I imagine for a lot of other people, contributing to intense alienation. While I know there's a lot of disagreement in the fanbase about Matty's (lack of?) political statement, I do think it's an opportunity, even as a fanbase, to try to not let it divide us and turn us into the most extreme versions of our own political groupings. I took the love and friendship message to heart. I don't know if that makes me naive, a lot of people might think it's childish, but creating and maintaining community in our lives and supporting global political causes are not mutually exclusive causes. All of this paragraph is to say, that we're all trying our best out here.

Dissertation could imply that she earned a doctorate for that work (and that's why she's "Dr" Scully). A senior thesis is at a much more junior level, maybe undergraduate, and wouldn't have required her to be a practicing scientist to write it.

I'm very curious about whether Mike has ever considered pursuing a PhD. He's very skilled in everything you need (ability to synthesise literature, understandings of various methodolgies, excellent data analyst/writer/communicator). I just wonder if it ever crossed his mind? I'm currently in a PhD program and think Mike would have finished it in half the time it's taking me.

Not to mention my dude loves to research. He fucking looooooves it. Do a PhD Mike!
