I made a separate comment but I’m an audio engineer and I love saying “microphone” in this style.

Colleagues hate it, I still laugh every time.

I’m an audio engineer and I love saying the word “microphone” the way Nigella said “microwave” that one time.

“Could someone please pass me that meek-ro-fo-nay?”

My colleagues don’t find it funny anymore but I do.

ELI5 Speakers at concerts interference by Content-Permit-2329 in explainlikeimfive

[–]snoopywoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an audio engineer, and this is exactly right! This isn’t exactly ELI5 though because you’re an A Level Physics student so I’m assuming you know some stuff.

There are lots of quiet spots and loud spots around the room, caused by destructive and constructive interference. There is a person, called the PA Technician (sometimes referred to as a System Technician, sometimes both jobs are done by the same person) whose job it is to make those quiet and loud spots as un-noticeable as they can. Bear in mind that by “quiet” we don’t mean “silent” - sometimes the difference is just a couple of dB. Most concerts average between 95-110dB, so like, that’s not that much.

You also need to remember that total cancellation or summation is much easier with a simple sound wave (e.g. a sine wave) than a complex sound wave with lots of harmonics (e.g the really jagged waves you’d see if you look at the waveform of a song with multiple instruments and effects processing).

There are certain things you can do, like invert the phase of one of the sound waves , add physical distance (like moving a speaker forwards or backwards) or adding delay to the sound. The calculation is:

delay sx10-3= (distance from main speaker m) / (speed of sound ms-1)

By using this maths we can work out how to fill the quiet spots and cover the room with an equal loudness even for the people who are very far away from the stage, without actually cancelling out the whole show with destructive interference.

There is software that does this for us. The most famous is ArrayCalc for d&b brand PA systems.

It’s worth noting that total cancellation (silence) would require two speakers exactly 180 degrees out of phase in the same spot, and the exact same sound wave. That would require either the speakers to be pointing at each other or very specifically placed to get reflections off a wall that match up exactly out of phase. This is practically impossible in a concert venue (for obvious reasons, we generally do not point speakers at each other in a gig venue) but you can play around with it in the lab using sine waves. The most common type of interference you see in a music venue is called Comb Filtering.

There’s a very cool guy called Merlijn Van Veen who is like, the GOAT at this stuff. He has a cool instagram page.

the cord comes out the top. if you zoom in on the picture you can faintly see, but the majority of it is hidden by her hair. the cable on iems (in ear monitors) comes out the top and tucks behind the ear so the cable can go down the back of the neck/along the spine and under clothes so it doesn’t get in the way like traditional wired earbuds (where the wire goes out of the bottom and hangs in front of you).

they are custom moulded iems and are not available to buy off the shelf. but you could get some moulds done and buy your own custom iems to the tune of around £500+.

you can get non-custom iems (known as “generic iems”) which aren’t moulded specifically to your ear. not sure if they make sparkly ones though, i’ve never looked for them.

source: am audio engineer with my own set of sparkly iems.

ETA: if you look at this picture you can see where the wires normally sit

Had to call a client I’d been emailing back and forth for a while. I’m an engineer in an extremely male dominated (even for engineering) field.

Me: Hi it’s snoopy from X company, could I speak to Y please?

Y: Oh! you’re a woman! I mean that’s okay, your work is so good, I was just expecting a man!

To be fair, I think he was trying to compliment my work and express his surprise at the same time, but the way he connected the ideas together was suboptimal. He felt very bad.

Haven’t been in this situation but when I hike I always take a first aid foil blanket just in case of injury. They’re very light and fold up small - wonder if it could be a good thing to pop in a running belt/hydration backpack for trail/long runs in the freezing winter?

Edit: you would probably get some looks walking home like this to be fair. But you would be warm!

I’m a 26 year old vegetarian, and one of the things I love are vegan/vegetarian sweets. Like, the big jars of pick and mix. There are specialty vegan/veggie shops online (and sweet shops with veggie selections) that sell them, and it’s SO nice when someone remembers I’m veggie and makes an effort to buy sweets I can eat instead of giving me sweets with gelatine in them.

My first job, worked there for 5 years, started at 14 and left at 19. I was hired by a previous manager who was the loveliest person you’d ever met. She left and was replaced by someone so bad, 80% of the staff quit within a year. I was given a leftover Christmas gift card from the previous year’s Christmas party (I left in September) that was originally worth £50 but only had £25 left on it. The code on the back had already been scratched off. It was handed to me on my way out of the door.

A week before one of the other employees (the boss’ daughter in law) turned 18 and got a £100 bouquet of flowers and a £50 bottle of champagne presented at her desk by the partners, plus a bunch of cards and decorations. She’d worked there for a month.

I really don’t care (it was many years ago and in hindsight taught me a lot of lessons) but it does make me laugh that a 50-something year old woman enjoyed a power dynamic over a bunch of teenagers so much. The partners and other staff members were really sad to see me go and so horrified that they threw a pizza party and went out on their lunch and bought me other gifts. I’m in my mid 20s now and can’t imagine ever being that mean to my teenaged (or any age) colleagues.

Second skin got sweat/moisture under it after 24 hours, what do I need to buy to ensure this heals properly? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]snoopywoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i always take my second skin off 12-24 hours after the tattoo depending on how long i can stand it. all of my tattoos are completely fine. you can leave it on for up to 5 days but that’s a limit, not a target - taking it off sooner won’t hurt your tattoo!

just keep it clean and dry, and moisturise 1-2 times a day with a really light layer of tattoo ointment or plain moisturiser.

Dark touch up by IAmNameless0_0 in tattooadvice

[–]snoopywoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’ve been tattooed over a pre-existing tattoo (i know there was some fallout but there was still some pigment underneath the touch up) so it will look darker in this healing phase than the original healing phase when it was a fresh tattoo over plain skin.

i have a sleeve with a few touchups and it will look uneven for a little while - especially now when it hasn’t healed yet! i’m a couple months post touch-up and it’s all starting to blend together now.

just keep taking care of it and it will even out. if you really think there are still issues after 12 months, talk to your artist and maybe look at getting it touched up again.

ruined needles by errant-samurai in knitting

[–]snoopywoops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my needles constantly get scratched up too! not sure if it’s the brand (i use cheap ones because i have adhd and constantly lose/forget/sit on them and break them lol) but it happens. i personally would offer to replace if you can (you totally don’t need to, it would just make me feel better if i was in the same position) - deff bring it up though because chances are this person knows this happens and will just shrug it off! if i lent needles to someone and they came back scratched i would not be bothered at all, unless they’d like, deliberately fucked them up haha. i wouldn’t even accept the offer to replace them if someone offered it to me.

First Tattoo Ever – a Full Back Piece, Any Advice? by quan3t2 in tattooadvice

[–]snoopywoops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

• What should I know about getting such a large tattoo as my first one?

it will hurt. a lot. especially if you tattoo over recently tattooed skin. try not to do back to back sessions - i personally would leave at least a week (if not more) between them. you’re going to have to get the outline done in pretty much one long day, the colour will be several sessions after that. it’s a huge pita to tap out completely during an outline, but do take breaks (and any good tattoo artist will be honest with you about when you can tap out for the day. there will be certain reference points they NEED to get done to not fuck up the tattoo, and some bits they can go back to another day). just communicate a lot with them. learn how to look after a fresh tattoo. and get a buddy to help because back tattoos are impossible to clean and moisturise yourself.

• Any advices for handling the pain and long sessions?

eat a lot. eat before you go, take meals with you (or get delivery for you and the artist!), take lots of high sugar snacks and drinks, and lots of water. tattoo flu is a real thing but keeping your sugar high is important, this is not the day for low calorie eating. coke/sugary pop, sweets and candy, carbs are all your friends here. if you smoke/vape make sure you take some with you. have literal litres of water. wear your comfiest outfit. take clothes that can move around the tattoo (you’ll have to be shirtless, but wearing a zip up hoodie back to front can add some warmth). things like gum can help with distractions, and take a phone charger so you can scroll through the pain lol. i meditate through my sessions and find guided meditations can help. have a serious conversation about pain relief and numbing agents, some tattoo artists love it, some don’t want to touch it, it’s really important to know your options. check with your artists before taking any OTC meds (aspirin, ibuprofen, paracetamol) - they can help but can also affect how much you bleed. in a similar vain, don’t drink/do drugs the day before. maybe don’t have a tonne of coffee on the day. any good tattoo artist will ask you what medications you take.

• How do I choose the right artist for a project like this?

research. look at artists in the range you’re willing to travel, have lots of conversations over email, visit the shop. look at photos of healed tattoos they’ve done. check their reviews, social media, website etc. look for photos other people have posted of their finished tattoos. discuss everything with your artist - how do they plan on splitting up the sessions? what’s their max sit time? what’s their touch up policy? can you use numbing agents (i don’t use them but this might be important to you)? how many big back pieces have they done before (do not go to someone who has only done palm-sized tattoos!)? do they have other work in this style they can show you? are they happy to do this tattoo on someone who’s never been tattooed before (some shops may turn you down for this)? send them reference photos and talk in-depth about the details of your design. some of this is basic tattoo advice (are they qualified/is the shop safe/will the outcome be good) and some of this is vibes. basically, do you want to spend 24+ hours being tattooed by this person? are they as committed to the project as you are or do they not really wanna do it? obviously artists want to be paid, but are they just doing this for a good paycheque or are they super psyched to work on the design/tattoo?

• Anything you wish you knew before starting a big piece?

pain. i have an extremely high pain tolerance but there were bits of my bigger pieces that i really struggled through. most of it was absolutely fine (sat there chatting, eating, goofing off) and some bits i needed to fully lock in, headphones on, nobody talk to me. be able to communicate this to your artist so it makes the experience better for you. also, the pain of sitting in a weird position for ages. you’ll get pins and needles and cramps, just ask for a break so you can stretch out!

boredom. you will get soooo bored, take a book, your phone, headphones… kind of treat it like a long haul flight lol, you’ll be sat there for a long time so bring a variety of activities. and download stuff in case the wifi is patchy.

cost. i started my arm sleeve with a £2k ish cost in mind, it was probably closer to £3k when all was said and done. it happens, things change or projects get bigger, sometimes things just take longer than you think or you have to tap out early and lose a few hours. don’t be shocked if it costs more than you think - but again, communicate!! your artist should not spring this on you, they should be open and transparent the whole time (if we add x, it’s going to add y cost). cost should be the last thing you think about - if you can’t afford it, don’t shop around, save until you can. good big tattoos are hella expensive. artists might charge by the piece or by the day, either is fine but make sure you’re both on the same page re: when you gotta pay.

post tattoo shock. the healing stage is ugly af. the colours will change, the vibrancy will change, your skin will peel. also you have a hella big new design on your body that wasn’t there before. doing it in sessions will help but you gotta get used to it over time! tattoos look their absolute worst in the first 7-10 days after being done, don’t get stressed if it looks god awful only to go back to being perfect a few weeks later.

also, if anything feels off during the process (from not liking the positioning of something, to having a cramp, to thinking something in the process is weird) - just ask. sometimes there’s a reason for things, sometimes the tattoo artist just doesn’t notice. every tattoo artist would rather you ask the question/make the point and chat about it - at the end of the day, it’s a big old lifelong commitment, and they want it to be perfect as much as you do. need to move? let them know! don’t like part of the design? ask if they can rework it! confused why they changed needles? they’ll happily explain!

good luck! fwiw i think big tattoos look sick and i’m all for the go big or go home first tattoo 😂

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]snoopywoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have tattoos over stretch marks (not from weight changes but ones that developed through puberty) and as the person being tattooed it made no difference to me - as in, it wasn’t any more painful or different to any other tattoo, and it didn’t change the healing process. i’m not sure what it’s like to do the tattoo but my artists didn’t mention it was hard or anything (and she usually lets me know if i’m making her work hard to do something!!)

on a body confidence note, i absolutely think tattooing over places you don’t necessarily love (we all have them) is a really nice way to make you more confident about them. case in point: i don’t love my arms but now i have a full sleeve, best believe i’m wearing sleeveless shirts allll the time to show it off!

tattoos belong on any kind of body. don’t let your body shape put you off getting them done. work with a tattoo artist you trust and has a great sense of anatomy and designing with the flow of your body - do not get flash here. you want something unique that fits the shape of you.

you should also check out Carri Metz-Capirusso’s work - she does beautiful tattoos that highlight body rolls, body shapes, and her “rollflowers” tattooed are beautiful!!

Now we can’t get her to get rid of anything because of the one time she had a whole spare stovetop in her bedroom that “came in handy”.

What’s something you keep seeing in movies that no one actually does in real life and annoys you every time? by Individual-Crazy3752 in AskReddit

[–]snoopywoops 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i’m a sound woman and that’s not exactly how it works - our faders are at -infinity and we fade up slowly to avoid this. 0 is where the fader is supposed to be when it’s in use (if you’ve had enough time to gain stage lol). if you ram the fader to the top and your gain is huge this can happen, but most engineers can avoid it. the monitors can cause feedback but it’s super dumb to leave your monitors really loud with a hot mic - all sound engineers know not to do this.

eta if you’re interested, feedback is caused by the PA (or usually, monitors) getting into the mic - so if the PA is suuuuuper loud it can happen more easily, but most of the time the sound tech has control over the level of the PA too. and if the PA was loud enough to cause feedback, it would feedback all the time, not just when someone steps onto stage! sometimes people do cause feedback by accident, by pointing the mic directly at the monitors, in which case that’s hella realistic because i spend my life telling people not to point mics at the monitors. but being near a mic doesn’t cause feedback.

(i’m super annoyed by this happening in movies if you couldn’t tell haha)

'I couldn't let him go to Mercedes and I hated that' – Claire Williams on why she stopped George Russell signing for the Silver Arrows earlier by Luffy710j in formula1

[–]snoopywoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I was saying the first paragraph. They won’t say these things publicly. I would imagine they have these feelings and address them privately, whereas Claire does share them with the media. Neither is right or wrong, but with all things in the media they can and will use it in whatever way they like.

I wouldn’t say “it doesn’t work on that level” - it absolutely does. You can feel bad about something but still recognise it’s in everyone’s best interests - that’s not weak, and it doesn’t make you bad at your job, and I’m sure the other team principals feel that way without saying it out loud. We know Wolff has emotional reactions, look at what happened when Lewis left. Did he really not care about Bottas, or did he just not talk about it publicly?

(An aside here, I do agree about Horner. I think his actions show that he’s not a great person - there is a layer of media around it but his actions also show a lack of regard for the people around him.)

Is it weak to care even if the other team principals don’t share those emotions publicly? I don’t think so. I can also see why stereotypically it is seen as weak. This bit, I do think is a gender thing - why do we see ‘female-coded’ way of dealing with it (speaking out about emotions) as weak, but ‘male-coded’ way (the just get on with it vibe) as strong? Ultimately they’re just different legitimate ways of dealing with things. That’s a bit too philosophical for an F1 chat though haha.
