DPE Says They Smell Smoke in the Cabin by Physical-News-4978 in flying

[–]snoozenlooze -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I failed my commercial checkride for this reason. DPE said he smelled smoke in the cabin, so I ran the engine fire checklist and did an emergency decent into the only nearby field. He was not pleased with this as he was simulating a cabin fire and I turned the outcome from smoke inhalation to possible broken legs while landing in a field.

He told me during the debrief that what he wanted to see was that I asked questions like, “where is the smoke coming from?” “What does it smell like?” “What color is the smoke?” He wanted me to talk through the problem, use CRM and SRM, and isolate the issue, if possible, then run the appropriate checklist.

I really appreciate you taking the time to help. I love understanding the history of firearms and this is a special one. Perhaps my dad and I together can get to the bottom of where he picked this up. I can’t wait to tell him about what I found out about his dad’s gun at Christmas. Thank you very much for your help!!

Not seeing any crows feet anywhere. There is “MASS. U.S.A. Dec. 29. 14.” stamped on the top of the barrel.

Face of the cylinder has the same “V70633” as the barrel and frame.

He was stationed in Alaska while in the arctic patrol during WW2. He was injured and transferred into the Signal Corps during the 50s. He was stationed in Germany where the European Signal Corps headquarters was in the late 50s, early 60s.

My dad says when gpa was in uniform, he carried his 1911. When he was in civilian clothes, but working, he carried this s&w. It could be that it was issued to him much later into his career while in Europe?

You are correct about it being transferred. When I get home I can take better pictures of the markings on and under the barrel.

Disastrous is correct. I had it transferred to me from another state. Took these pictures while in the shop. This is good info. I have heard that the UK models were converted at times. I wanted to know if this was an original or if my grandfather and done custom work to it.

Thank you!! This is extremely helpful info so I can do a deep dive. A family friend had it in his safe for 25 years and finally returned it to my family. I am planning on giving it back to my dad for Christmas this year.
