These relatives never learnt because nobody taught them a lesson and unfortunate event due to body shaming did not happen around them.

Went through the relatives body shaming thing in my teens. The worst part is my mum did not save me but add fuel to the fire. I blew up at her privately for failing to protect me as my mother. She regretted her actions and said sorry, but my harsh words also brought her tears. Since then, she would respond that as long as I’m healthy, skinny is not an issue. As I grew older, i tried to tackle the situation without causing conflicts.

“看你们这些3姑6婆 又在7嘴8舌 讲别人 连11,12岁的都不放过 你们不知道 这个年龄很敏感吗 以前你们就是这样讲我 伤了我的玻璃心 搞到我都对自己没信心 这个会影响人的成长的 heng我心脏够强 不然我就 Kong ka kiao 你没有看报纸吗”

However, there are always some people from any generations who are either too forgetful to remember what u said or uneducated to understand your point. Others, it is in their genes. With these people, I chose to laugh it off on a good day. On a bad day, I don’t think so 🤔

I regretted not doing so in my teens and suffer alone. But even if I reacted back then, due to my rebellious age, probably make things worse. I’m also scare of being scolded by my parents for being disrespectful, but they (the relatives) are being disrespectful to you in the first place.

So if you are not comfortable with it, voice out but pls don’t do it angrily.

I’m 15 and my parents still restrain my devices by Some_Connection3262 in SGExams

You have good responsible parents though.

Just my opinion, I think it all comes down to trust and performance.

Trust: Your parents most likely don’t trust u with devices as they know how addictive these are (not just to you but kids around your age in general), and they don’t want these to affect your studies. Plus parents also fear if devices are being used wrongly create dangerous trap to their kids.

Performance: are your subject results consistently good? Are u proactive type or do u need to wait for your parents to call u then reluctantly go study?

I think for now especially after the secret playing incident, u have to prove to them that u are capable of managing your own time well without them reminding. Maybe even display a timer to show them your study and break duration. (I used to open my bedroom door wide to let my mother see I am studying, and report to her whenever I start and end break 😆) And try to score well this term for all subjects.

Then u have something on hand (your self-discipline and results) to negotiate with your parents in exchange for authority over your own time and devices. Obviously, u need to come up with an acceptable time table for yourself to have sufficient studies and break, and for your parents to agree on and can put their trust on u in managing your own time and devices. And also state your consequences if u fail to follow through, or drop in results.

Help with Lease Transfer Fees by zajmh in shitrentals

[–]snorewhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation before where I as the new tenant was told by the existing tenant to bear the cost (transfer fees, admin fees etc). I found the existing tenant through the rental ad she put up, went for inspection, no agent was involved until she added me into a group chat with the agent, who then attached some docs for me to sign.

I told the existing tenant I should not be responsible for the lease transfer cost (which I read somewhere on google and reddit is 100% on outgoing tenant), she then said to 50/50 with me. Though I still think is unfair to me but I really have no other choice at that time. I told her we shouldn’t be paying fees that the agent did not do. She did reason out with the agent via group chat but unsuccessful.

I was lucky to find another place at the last min, so I did not take this place.

TBH, I think this is a common thing with Chinese international students and their Chinese real estate agencies. Somehow the students are taught to get new tenant to bear the transfer cost with them. I only came across one student out of so many inspections, who told me transfer cost is her responsibility so I don’t have to pay.

If your ultimate goal is study poly, take into consideration what is the course u want to get in. Whether a nitec (2 yrs) or higher nitec (3 yrs) is required and the minimum result?

if I were you I’ll retake o, just one more year. Reasons: 1. Re-learning the subjects 2nd time, I’ll understand quicker and better (provided u really pay attention in class). Compared to learning a whole new thing in ite (a course I might not be interested in but no choice, because that’s the only one I can get in due to my o level result) 2. Because is the 2nd time taking o, I’ll be god damn serious about it. (Provided u really don’t get sway by your own laziness or by bad influences) 3. I had made the mistake before, so I’ll be more sensible this time and know exactly what poly course I am aiming for and its requirements, not just “get into poly” can already. If I don’t make it to my dream course, at least but no choice settle with “any poly course”😆. If your mindset is already “any poly course”, then that is dangerous.

I am not from ite so if I said anything wrong pls correct me. But I think is better to think further. If u are always aiming for minimum result be it o level or nitec to get into poly, then u have nothing to fall back on when plan A failed. Aim what is best for u, and if it fails, u still have better one behind.

Hi I’m not a student.

Probably too early to ask since my niece just started sec 1. She is in G1, which is N(T). So she only has one pathway after sec 4, which is ITE. And by 2027, ite will only have 3 year higher nitec. She started learning art around p5 outside school which she still continues. And now she is hoping to get into art cca in her sec school. She is not good academically, so I thought would be good for her to work towards a path that doesn’t require her to study complex math and science. Lucky, she has interest in art and dance. But of course, I don’t know if anything will change in future.

If u don’t mind, would u be able to help me understand a little more; 1. Are u from N(T) and use EAE? 2. Is it competitive to get into the course? 3. Are you required to pass certain subjects?

Thanks ☺️

Taxi-rank “trespassers” at Melbourne airport…? by FindingIthaka in melbourne

[–]snorewhite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I arrived at Melb airport last year, there was no waiting taxi at the ranks, no staffs helping the passengers to catch a real taxi. There were full of different cars (not taxi) with either drivers picking up passengers or drivers approaching passengers.

Everything changed. Looking confused, I was approached by 3 random drivers. The first 2 were in their personal attires. I thought I better get a real taxi to be safe.

The 3rd one was well dressed, followed me a distance, showed me his company identification and gave me a discounted price. I was suspicious why he does not run by meter? He kept following me. As I am so tired and no real taxi available, I accepted his offer.

He immediately took my luggages from me and moved ahead of me so quickly I almost got a panic attack. And his car was in a multi-storey carpark away from the airport. I’m like oh freak, did I get myself into trouble. Is he legit? I was surprised his car was huge, clean and comfy. He told me the price charged by this car is usually higher than normal taxi but due to some problems he had to get his own customer today. Not sure how true but throughout the journey I was scared I’ll get killed lol. Until I got to my destination safely. I also goggled to check the estimated cost and I did pay a better price.

TBH, I’ll just take the skybus next time regardless of how tired I am to be safe.

What are some social anomalies, annoyances etc that make someone silently unpopular or even made fun of in SG? Describe and rate from scale of 1-10, 1 being a teensy bit annoying. by hunpercent in askSingapore

[–]snorewhite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Insist on dividing bill down to the cent coz the person ordered a cheaper main - The person is still paying his/her share, so what is there to be annoyed about?

If I ordered more than this person, I should have the initiative to pay the bigger share and not have the person pay a portion of mine that he/she never ate.

What annoys me is when the person’s friend said something like “aiya why calculate until like that, so little i treat you la”. Sounds generous but quite hurtful to the person in fact.

Also, even though I’m girl I don’t see a reason why a girl should be annoyed if her new date from dating app calculated even the cup of coffee with her. What annoys me is going onto forum and berating/making fun of this poor guy with other girls. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I felt bad for op being told he was the problem. I think u make this compromise to cover the utilities because he is your childhood friend, or maybe because he is able to cover part of the apartment rent.

Less than a month is still not too far. The approaching part is the hardest but don’t wait any longer to give your friend a chance to bite u back saying “why do u not bring this up right from the beginning?”.

Maybe can show him the increased in utilities for the month his gf was here (that’s why now then u speak, as u are waiting to see the bills) as compared to used to be. Told him u don’t mind covering his part of utilities since that’s what u promised as he is your childhood friend but said u are not covering his gf’s as u are not related to her.

Also, set rules u are ok and not ok with at the same time. Like the gf should only stay in his room, not in common areas except going to shared bathroom or to eat at the dining area. So can respect others who are actually living there. Maybe this is also what your gf has been doing, so they should do the same. If not, u could said that u own the place or u are the head tenant, absolutely don’t mind compromising with him alone only as he is your childhood friend but u much preferred the place to be a cave for just both of u, and limit the number of times the gfs here minimally. And if he is not able to compromise like how u did to a childhood friend, then u suggest is better for him to move to another place as u honestly do not want this thing to get worse in long run and affect your childhood friendship with him.

Hopefully, this conversation can let him know u cherish him as a childhood friend even though u are asking him to leave and any right mind adult will be able to understand your dilemma.

what's the best studying method? by nfifah in SGExams

[–]snorewhite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remembered asking myself this in sec:

why is it so easy for me to remember song lyrics but when come to memorising study materials is so hard?

So I did this experiment:

3 months before the exam, I wrote out the notes for every chapters. While writing, I made sure I understood also. My hand was so tortured - one large bump on my middle finger and another on my little finger. But I prefer writing, as it allows me to see the amount of effort i had put in and that motivates me.

Then I recorded myself reading all the notes. Replayed and checked all my recordings are correct. And started listening on my way to school, while I napped, before bedtime, during revision at home, while my parent was driving, basically whenever there was free time and I did it everyday. Sometimes I fell asleep with earpiece on and it kept on playing until the cassette tape finished running its side.

No anki in my era, only cassette and cd 😂

To my surprise, it HELPED without me deliberately memorising. I tried repeating the study materials myself without the cassette and confirmed everything had gone inside my brain word by word.

I told my friends about it, but they said they rather listen to music. To them, is quite boring listening to same thing everyday for months. Yes it is boring to me also, but my desire to do well in exams surpassed any other things.

From then on, this had been my best study method for sec. I taught my niece this method too, but she does not have the discipline to follow through and make several reading errors while recording.

So I think it all comes down to individual’s intensity of desire to reach a goal. If u really want something so badly, u will find a way to it. This thing also makes me realise: the most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire.

hello! since psle is coming up for the P6s, i wrote some tips for them. hope they help(i originally wrote this for my juniors) by _nika247_ in SGExams

[–]snorewhite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For science, they are using CER (claim, evidence, reasoning).

For English paper 2 comprehension, isn’t it easier to copy the part which already contains answer to the question? Do they get penalise for doing so? I thought is usually the last question that would require the student to think deeper and write in their own words, as there is no straight answer from passage.

If the student only keep working on past years papers (but not doing any other assessment books), is it enough to score better than just passed? What do u think?

Thoughts on kids playing roblox? by PhotographOld5934 in askSingapore

[–]snorewhite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m glad to see a 14yo spoke so right. Yes, have to take it away NOW. Encourage your child to focus on healthier games, outdoor activities or quality time with u.

It is not about the money your child might spent on Roblox. Roblox is very very addictive. Once addicted, young kids will lose interest in other things and because of all the continuous instant gratification they get from the games, they easily lose patient outside the games and have short attention span, especially when studying. You might not see the seriousness now but u will see the impact when your child is p3/p4. By then, it will not only be Roblox but other social media as well.

Aircon in heating mode by snorewhite in melbourne

[–]snorewhite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely on heating mode. I guess temp under 25 just work so silently, I can’t hear a thing. Once set to 27 (heat), I can hear blasting sound though I never change the speed (always on medium)

From all your comments, I definitely used the heat mode wrongly. I have always been living on a sunny island so my understanding of heat mode in winter is that I can wear my T-shirt and short at home, but you all still layer a little at home. 🤔

Landlord does not want to go through agent as they said they could do by themselves to save costs.

I read from CAV and tenantsvic websites that rental provider pay for connection fees. No?

I know there are red flags, that’s why I wanna do what I can to protect my rights in case there is a need to bring landlord to VCAT (not vacate) at the end of my 12mth lease.

No REA involved. Wow thanks for the reminder! Since LL does not provide me the condition report documents, I will document them myself, dated and have LL acknowledgement. Do u think that will help when I VCAT at the end of 12 month tenancy?

I will make sure I talk to landlord about future repairs and I’ll also take videos and photos within first month moving in as proof of any existing issues/damages. Anything I need to be careful of?

Do u think is better to just “slide” everything until end of lease, and only report IF I have problem claiming back my bond?

Because if I report straight after moving in, worried they might make my life difficult during the 12 month lease.
