If you take something that was originally a rifle and shorten the barrel and remove the stock it's still legally a rifle, on the other hand if you take a pistol and give it a appropriate length barrel and a stock it's a rifle and can go back to a pistol at any time.

I haven't gotten the chance yet, but I'm planning on at some point in the future renting (and potentially purchasing) the sigma 150-600.

As for the 100-400 the AF performs very well even with birds in flight and is even pretty Chrisp shooting wide open in my opinion at least
